Overview

Warm, woody, and dense, with a controlled sustain, the EC1 is a 14-mil single-ply head with the Edge Control ring mounted on the underside to eliminate unwanted mid-range frequencies and enhance attack. The extra film thickness extends durability while maintaining the stick response of a single-ply. A 3-mil patch on the Reverse Dot model lends additional attack and focus in the center for fat backbeats.

Features
  • 14-mil single-ply head
  • 3-mil patch for additional attack and focus in the center for fat backbeats
  • Edge Control ring on the underside to eliminate unwanted mid-range frequencies and enhance attack

I had a lot to say about this head, but you should really read Alex N Chains review as it is detailed and accurate. I will only emphasize a few points. This head is incredibly loud and probably isn't suitable for quiet gigs or in the rehersal room. In my opinion, the best applications for this particular head are in live situations, especially when the drums are unmiked and the music is loud and heavy, or in the studio where the mix and volume of the individual drums can be manipulated. In 35 years of playing, this is the only snare head I have used that produces a studio quality sound live and without effects. And unlike reverse dot heads, Remo or Evans, there are no sweet spots or dead zones. All that being said, if the features of this head suit your needs, you won't anything else to match it.

The center dot works well, the outer rings are standard EC2,questionable, which flaked off inside my drums previously(I owned an entire set of clear EC2's last year with same outer rings which did this on all my drums). I hope this problem has been resolved. Versions of this head in 2012 had outer rings of the same material as the center dot-no problems with those.
So with reservation I give this head a OK rating.

Comments about Evans EC1 Reverse Dot Coated Snare Drumhead:

I use coated heads because I often play with brushes. I love the coating on this head. And, has a great sound with sticks. Only bummer, was after my first gig with it, and hitting rim shots a lot (country music rim shots, not rock head/rim at same time rim shots), the rubber end of my stick wore through the coating within a few songs.

Comments about Evans EC1 Reverse Dot Coated Snare Drumhead:

Tried the snare head and played it at a show right off the bat. This snare made my Ludwig Epic snare really open up , but too much. The ring and openness of the snare was too much for my taste in a snare sound, especially a wooden snare. I put it on my metal snare instead and went back to a coated single ply head.

This head is great, I tune my snare very tight and it works so nice. Theres like no overtones and the dot makes it sound good and solid. I'll say it's worth the money.

Im a Drummer who gigs about 3 time a week and usually my snare-head goes dead in 4 months. This head has lasted about 8.The only thing bad is the bounce on the head isn't as good as I like it. but its still works when you need it to.

My Tama Artwood (maple) snare came equipped with one of these heads. I have since tried others, but in the end came back to the EC1. With this drum it has a nice woody open sound, with just the right (slight) amount of dampening to control the ring. Awesome crack. I will be sticking with this head.

Comments about Evans EC1 Reverse Dot Coated Snare Drumhead:

It makes your snare sound like mix between a confused snare and a floor tom. It rings like a snare but it sounds wayyyyy to deep. I tried tuning it and when i put it the tightest it could go it still sounded deep. Not good for punk or rock music maybe good if your into that really deep snare sound but other than that not good.
