I've been using this tool for three months and it is really great. Every 2 to 3 months I change strings for my guitars and basses and it used to be a long process ۡ 30min to 1 hr. With this you can change them in a moment ۡ clock in hand 12 min. Nevertheless the principles to change strings remain; if you stress a string too much it will break for sure, if you do not constantly bend it during the process it may break or will lose the tone faster, you wind strings counter-clockwise specially remember this in a 3x3 arrangement or you will break some (thatۡs why it has reverse), etc. This is not a toy neither an industrial tool, it serves for what is meant and is definitively a must if you regularly change strings to your gear.

I am happy with my purchase of the Ernie Ball Peg Battery powered string winder. Reason being that I have 5 guitars. 2 Strats a Telecaster and a Les Paul and a Gibson ES 335. I use all of these guitars at one time or another and I like the sound of new strings. The power winder makes changing out broken strings on the fly very do-able. It also cuts down on time to re string my main guitars for gigs. The only concern is that it is battery powered and seems to have a little less torque than I would like. Also, I am concerned about how much punishment it may be able to take. I will be curious as to how long it will last before it has to be replaced. Other than that, it is everything Ernie Ball says it is...

Avoid This Thing at All Costs!

By Bill Summers

from Avondale, Arizona

Comments about Ernie Ball PowerPeg Battery Powered String Winder:

Guitarists, DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF JUNK! I bought one today, and took it back to GC within an hour. Poor quality electrical contacts make it work intermittently. In other words, when you pull the trigger, it might come on, or it might not. The quality is so cheap to begin with. You feel more like you are holding a kid's toy in your hand instead of a serious tool that a professional musician or technician would use. Ernie Ball owes us an apology on this one! By the way, if yours does work, GO SLOW when putting on a string. If you tension it up too fast, and the string goes ka-pop, then it is your fault, not that of the device. You would be better off getting a string crank that can be adapted to an electric drill. Be careful though. Operator error can happen with that also.

Cool Product!

By Kevin Bradford

from Wichita, KS

Comments about Ernie Ball PowerPeg Battery Powered String Winder:

I bought this because I my wife just bought me a new Taylor NS24ce and I figured I might need be able to use it in changing strings. It works great for taking off the old strings, I still like putting new strings on by hand, but taking the old ones off it works fantastic and saves a lot of time! Good value.

not bad , good idea, time saver

By Michael Wren

from Norfolk Virginia

Comments about Ernie Ball PowerPeg Battery Powered String Winder:

I was not to sure I'd like the whole automated peg winder idea, but call me a fan. I give it 4 stars because I thought it would be a bit faster, and it eats batterys, like most every thing that runs on AA's. All in all I give it as a gift to anyone else I know who plays guitar, and if I break mine I'll get a new one.

Saves time

By Stratocaster guru

from 'Berg', Ohio

Comments about Ernie Ball PowerPeg Battery Powered String Winder:

This is a time saver for sure. You must supply four AA batteries. Will definitely speed up string changes and give a better appearence on the tuneing post. Motor appears to be fairly strong as my bass player was able to change his P-Bass strings useing it. It fits easily in my Fender hard shell cases' extra compartment and along with strings and wire cutters, there's still plenty of room for other stuff. IT IS MADE OF PLASTIC. May be an issue in time. Dont know how long the batteries will last/how many strings can be changed with a fresh set of batteries but do know I've changed the strings on 2 Strats, 1 Tele, 1 acoustic and the P-Bass and it appears to be going strong. Ernie Ball has a pretty solid rep and 19 bucks isnt too bad for what you get.

Ernie Ball Peg winder

By Gaylerd

from Keller, TX

Comments about Ernie Ball PowerPeg Battery Powered String Winder:

THisi Ernien Ball Peg winder works great. I change strings about every 3-4 weeks, so I was hoping to find somehting like this. I just wish it had a feature to remove the pegs, I still ahve to use another tool to get the pegs out! But, I guess thats why they don't call it the "Ernie Ball Peg and String WInder... with peg revover tool"! Other than that, it works great. Get it, IT will save you time!!!!!!

Ernie got it right!

By Patrick Wieger

from Louisville, Kentucky

Comments about Ernie Ball PowerPeg Battery Powered String Winder:

I read the mixed reviews about this product and, honestly, was a little hesitant to order it. I'm glad to say that my fears were unfounded. I popped the batteries in this puppy and proceeded to restring four guitars (including two 12 stringers). The device performed exactly as advertised and saved me a ton of time and effort. It is well-made (contrary to one review) and has not showed any signs of pooping out so far. If you string guitars like I do, there's a good bit of backing up and getting that wind to overlap the end of the string just right so this tool is right up your alley. Good luck. I hope you like it as much as I do.

works for me

By Dan McKenzie

from Hemet California

Comments about Ernie Ball PowerPeg Battery Powered String Winder:

It winds my strings neatly and doesn't break them. I don't unwind my strings I cut them with dukes and throw them away. I have 42 guitars, I don't have time to unwind. As for the battery door, guitar center is very fair if it doesn't work they will take it back. If you don't want to return things its your loss. I give it 5 stars, it works for me.

One speed, SLOW, Can also damage headstock finish.

By Steve

from Knoxville, TN

See all my reviews

Comments about Ernie Ball PowerPeg Battery Powered String Winder:

It is very slow. You can wind a lot faster with a manual winder. It would be more useful if it were varible speed. It also will do a great job of putting a circular shaped marks in the finish of your headstock once you have installed the string. I will be returning the product. Thanks for the dings in my guitar. It will remind me to stick with what works.

Save your money

By Frank J

from Redford, MI

Comments about Ernie Ball PowerPeg Battery Powered String Winder:

This is junk. After the first couple of long unwinds of my guitar strings, the thing went dead. Better to get a cordless screwdriver and a string winder insert. It is more money, but well worth the price.

Time saver

By Robert BOWEN

from Durand Mi

Comments about Ernie Ball PowerPeg Battery Powered String Winder:

I have arthritis in both thumbs so cranking strings isn't something I look forward to. I have one of those things to put in a drill but that is a hassle and if I forget to turn the torque down it can pop a string. I do wish it had indicators for right and left rotation but for the money I feel it is a great little gadget.

My friend laughed when he saw it...

By Dan Fellman

from Ashland Oregon

Comments about Ernie Ball PowerPeg Battery Powered String Winder:

... but it's not a gimmic. It works great! Changing strings is so much easier and quicker now. I used to put off changing my strings when they needed it because it's such a hassle, but now it's so fast and easy, I do it more often. I've even changed strings during a break on a gig a couple of times. This is a must have for a guitar tech and definitely worth having if you own a few guitars or play professionally. It works great, and the batteries last a surprisingly long time considering the torque that the motor puts out. I definitely recommend this. It's well worth the price.

Gareat Idea..... I hope it holds up for years to come.

By Mike

from Los Alamitos, CA

Comments about Ernie Ball PowerPeg Battery Powered String Winder:

This is a good accessory, one long overdue. Thanks to Ernie Ball... I'm not a big string fan, but, I do have a few of the accessories.... all good stuff. I just started using it.... I'm hoping that the battery life is realistic, and that it's durability will prevail. I've used it twice only; once on my Telecaster, and then on my acoustic (with ebony keys). The slot is a little tight, but it works fine. Thanks for your innovative ideas and concern for professionals. We greatly appreciate your products! Mike

Time Saver!

By Ryan Alvidres-Ivie

from San Diego, CA

Comments about Ernie Ball PowerPeg Battery Powered String Winder:

Restringing is a pain in the rear, and if you're doing it entirely by hand, it's just so much more strenuous. Sure, you can use hand winders, but then there's the issue of keeping it on the tuning key while you spin it around. This cool little toy eliminates the impracticalities of the aforementioned methods of unwinding strings. The head stays firmly attached to the tuning keys and it turns them really fast (nothing like a drill motor, but much faster than using your hands or a manual winding tool. You can control the direction in which the head rotates so you can adjust for 3-on-3 headstocks or even wind the new strings back up. This tool is worth investing in. It really does save you a lot of time so you can get right into playing or whatever else you have to do for the day.
