Overview

Ernie Ball 2721 Cobalt Regular Slinky Electric Guitar Strings are a new spin on Ernie Ball's best selling set of strings which have been played by the likes of Eric Clapton, John Mayer, Steve Vai and many more. The Cobalt Series is clearly an improvement on its classic nickel-wound counterpart giving the player increased sustain, clarity and output. In addition, they resist sweat and moisture better and have unmatched flexibility when compared to other nickel wound strings. Cobalt is the most magnetically active string alloy on the planet and attracts the magnets in your pickups more than any other string.

"Ernie Ball Cobalt Strings sound and feel better than anything I've ever played! You have to check these out!" - Slash.
"Cobalt Strings feel incredibly silky under my fingers and deliver more punch, output, and clarity than normal strings!" - John Petrucci.

All Ernie Ball strings are precision manufactured to the highest standards and the most exacting specs to assure consistency, optimum performance and long life. Made in the USA.

I'll cut to the chase. As compared to the run-of-the-mill nickel strings... THE GOOD 1) Smooth feel 2) Slightly increased output 3) Better definition/clarity (bright, but not tinny/shrill) 4) Very good tuning stability - tuned up to pitch quickly and stayed there very consistently THE NOT-SO-GOOD 1) A bit pricey 2) Very small drop in "warmth" - didn't bother me much So I really liked these as compared to nickel strings. However, I use GHS Progressives. Compared to these, the Cobalts have fewer advantages. Tonally, I think they are on the same level. The Cobalts may have a bit more output and smoother feel. The tuning stability might sway me to these. I'll need to see how they hold up over time. Only 1 gig on the Cobalts so far, so I'll need to weigh-in on the longevity at a later date. That will also give me some time to refine my opinion as the strings "season". Definitely worth a try as they do provide non-trivial differences. Everyone has different tastes, so no better way to decide than for yourself!

Bought a 3-Pack of 10's. Right out of the package the 0.46 felt "Ruff" and Rusty, not smooth at all. All 3 packs had a similar "Ruff" almost "Tacky" feel on the 0.46, 0.36 and 0.26. The solid wire strings were quite smooth. Strung up my PRS Custom 24 to start, tried the Strat next. Clearly a much brighter tone than your typical Nickel wound string. Within a week the 0.46 on the PRS Custom 24 showed signs of what looked to be rust. This guitar was exposed to daily play and practice. Brightness seemed to decay on both instruments after a Month. Tone 5/5, Consistency 3/5, Quality 1/5. Verdict: Save your money, and go buy better Guitars, Pickups and Tube Amps instead.

Best strings I've ever put on an electric guitar

By Vincent Bath

from Salt Lake

Comments about Ernie Ball 2721 Cobalt Regular Slinky Electric Guitar Strings:

I replaced the strings on a brand new Fender Stratocaster and the difference is more than substantial. Mine is the HSH model and sounded okay before. Now with the Cobalt strings each pickup change sounds like a different guitar. Fuller tones, remarkable clarity. I had no idea how good the pups were until I tried these strings. Wow!

never going back again

By stephen bauch

from dayville ct

Comments about Ernie Ball 2721 Cobalt Regular Slinky Electric Guitar Strings:

When i first bought these strings i was let down. I noticed the output was higher but there was something that just didnt sound right. After a week i went back to the regular slinky nickel strings and i was stunned by how bad they sounded. They sounded lifeless. No punch at all and i had to turn my amp up to get the same output as the cobalt strings. 2 days later i put the cobalts back on and wont look back.

Increased Clearity

By Alex Augustus

from Rockville Conneticut

Comments about Ernie Ball 2721 Cobalt Regular Slinky Electric Guitar Strings:

These strings are truly amazing. They sound and feel better than any other Ernie Ball string. Better clarity and a very tight low end. It's amazing how you can hear each note perfectly.

Wow, What a Difference!

By Carl Tripodi

from Annapolis, Maryland

Comments about Ernie Ball 2721 Cobalt Regular Slinky Electric Guitar Strings:

I installed these strings on my Fender Strat with passive Seymour Duncan pick ups, and wow what a difference did these strings make. The guitar sounds more aggressive and detailed. I used to have to pound on the strings when doing hammer ons in order to hear every note, with the Cobalt strings, I do not. These will be my strings of choice from here on out. These are the best strings I have ever installed on my Strat.

A little disappointed, really

By Jim Adams

from Peoria

Comments about Ernie Ball 2721 Cobalt Regular Slinky Electric Guitar Strings:

I installed these strings on my guitar approximately a week ago on my Schecter C-1 Classic, and quite frankly, I did not feel as if they were worth all of the hype. They did not *feel* silky and superior, but felt rather rough and prohibitive in even the simplest of moves. I suppose the midrange response was a little more pronounced, but, for me, the pro's did not outweigh the con's of these strings. I switched back to Ernie Ball Reular Slinkies, and am by far happier with the end product.

NOT silky or smooth

By John Tinsley

from St. Louis Missouri

Comments about Ernie Ball 2721 Cobalt Regular Slinky Electric Guitar Strings:

Big letdown. Strings feel sticky & dry. They do not feel smooth & silky as advertised. I agree that they do produce more output & better sustain but not enough to justify the price or lack of feel. I will be going back to my regular slinky's.

Over-hyped?

By Timothy Myers

from Ohio

Comments about Ernie Ball 2721 Cobalt Regular Slinky Electric Guitar Strings:

It was with a fair amount of anticipation that I awaited the arrival of these strings. I'll cut to the chase - I found them to be overly-bright and rather harsh sounding, especially with single coils. Better with HBs and the tone rolled way back, but still not the sound I was hoping for. On the plus side, they do bend nicely and produce decent sustain. I didn't find them to be "dry" or "sticky" at all - quite smooth. Anyway, they're okay but certainly not the "holy grail" of guitar strings.

Found Religion

By Steve Weidemann

from Lake Forest, CA

Comments about Ernie Ball 2721 Cobalt Regular Slinky Electric Guitar Strings:

After being swayed by all the PR and hype, I ordered a couple sets online and replaced the strings on my Fender Strat and Epiphone Dot. The feel and sustain are fantastic. I'm not a pro, but as a hobbyist, it makes playing more enjoyable. Getting a set for my PRS Santana SE and keeping another set in waiting - since they are harder than hell to find in the store. They keep selling out.

Great Strings

By Michael Seagroves

from Durham, North Carolina

Comments about Ernie Ball 2721 Cobalt Regular Slinky Electric Guitar Strings:

Definitely give these strings a try! I had a set of regular nickel power slinks on my dean ml (tuned to D standard) and I like them, but didn't love them. The harmonics felt lacking to me and...not sure, they just didn't have any wow factor for me. So I decided to try these new Cobalts thinking it was probably a gimmick (also went back up to E standard), but couldn't have been more wrong. These things are legit. The cobalt seems to have been the kick the nickel strings needed. The harmonics jump every note is strong and full of great tone. I wasn't blown away by any means; the difference isn't astronomical, but it is noticeable. All in all I love these strings and most likely will be playing them for a while. Might be hard to find something better

Works great with Seymour Duncan Pickups

By Robin Stonestreet

from Evansville, IN

Comments about Ernie Ball 2721 Cobalt Regular Slinky Electric Guitar Strings:

I was using 12's Nickel and Nickel coated strings on an archtop and was never happy with either the clean or dirty tones on my tube amp. The Seymour Duncan Jazz pickups would sound terrible on high volume or weak on lower volume. Now I can crank the volume all the way up on a neck, split coil pickup and get a great tone on the dirty channel and very clean jazz tones on the clean channel. There was even a noticeable difference playing straight acoustic. I am now using the 11's and getting better flexibility out of the string bending without any loss of Bass tones with the smaller strings. The Cobalt strings are not coated but it took only a couple of minutes to get used to sliding on the strings and keeping the noise to a minimum. The middle string tones are much more defined without a harsh treble from the B and upper E strings. The sustain is great and harmonics are much easier to obtain. I can't wait to get a set for my Strat.

Best strings I've ever used!

By DAVID DENNIS

from Eaton Rapids, MI

Comments about Ernie Ball 2721 Cobalt Regular Slinky Electric Guitar Strings:

I've been playing guitar for over 40 years now and for electric guitars these are the best strings I've used. My custom fender telecaster has a SD Pearly gates bridge and a SD 59 PAF neck pickup. These have a low output but sound wonderful together. Put on a set of these and WOW, it came alive. Still beautiful and controllable, wonderful tone but like 6 db of gain or more. It's like putting a preamp in your guitar. My SG didn't see as much gain, but my Les Paul also came alive. Note that all three have mahogany bodies and necks, rosewood fret boards and set necks. The SG definitely has the hottest pickups. SO, I guess, if your pickups are already hot don't expect a lot of improvement.

Finally

By Brandon McFerrin

from Charleston, MS

Comments about Ernie Ball 2721 Cobalt Regular Slinky Electric Guitar Strings:

After many different types of strings, I have finally found the ones that speak to me. I bought these only because my local store did not have the cleartone strings I normally play. So glad I did. These things feel so good and sound amazing too. These strings bend really easy, so that's a plus! Never thought a string would make such an impact for me, but these are my new favorites.

Very bright tone

By Patricia Paulson

from Little Rock, Arkansas

Comments about Ernie Ball 2721 Cobalt Regular Slinky Electric Guitar Strings:

The tone produced by these strings is bright and clean. Some people might not like how they sound. You can go to Ernie Ball's website and listen to the sound of their strings, so I suggest doing that before you commit to a pack of these. These are pretty smooth strings but I wouldn't call them "silky smooth."

Careful!

By DUSTIN

from YPSI, MICHIGAN

Comments about Ernie Ball 2721 Cobalt Regular Slinky Electric Guitar Strings:

Keep and eye on your bridges and tailpieces. These bad boys are not only crisp to the ear but deadly to my hardware. Epiphone Les Pual Traditional with cheap metals are getting pretty ground down. They kick up burs on my E A and D saddles creating a sharp point causing premature breakage. Not to mention the wear on my frets. Ive tried a few things to slow it down but ultimately, I might have to swap my bridge and tailpiece. Tough call because the string do sound amazing, they feel real good, and the bite is just right. So, If you have a good quality guitar, run these. But keep an eye out!

Comments about Ernie Ball 2721 Cobalt Regular Slinky Electric Guitar Strings:

Put these on a Carvin guitar with Eric Johnson pickups about 3 weeks ago. Bright, clean, loud tone. Learned on cheap guitar, have heavy touch. For me Super lights cause tuning problems, Lights don't bend enough. But Cobalt strings in lights have consistent tuning yet bend like super lights. As far was rust, I don't leave my guitars in the rain, nor do I allow the strings to stay dirty. If you change strings based on usage and wipe them down after heavy playing, you should't have a problem, I don't. Plan on using these from now on, on this guitar. Plan on trying them on my Fender, though the tone could be too bright for single coils, will post if thats the case. But humbuckers certainly benefit from the tone.
