Overview

The Music Man StingRay Slo Special 4-String HH Electric Bass is constructed with a select hardwood body, select maple neck, Schaller BM tuners, and a 3-band active EQ. This version offers dual Music Man humbucking pickups with 5-way switching for an even greater range of sound.

Few basses are as flat-out cool or have as much powerful tone as the famous StingRay. When it was introduced in 1976, it was the first bass to feature active electronics. Advances such as a 6-bolt neck joint, contoured body, superior neck truss rod system, and rock-solid bridge keep the StingRay Slo Special bass in an exclusive collection of high-end basses.

The Sterling neck is a thinner profile than the standard StingRay, so you can fly up and down the neck at lightning speed. The comfort pays for itself.

I always loved the Stingray body style and sound, but the neck was just too thick and wide for me. I own a number of Music Man Sterlings because they have the most comfortable neck on any bass I've ever played/owned (which is virtually every brand). However, while I love the Sterlings, there was something about the Stingray's classic body shape and use of Alnico magnets in the pickups (Sterlings use Ceramic which are "hotter" and more modern sounding) that I always wanted to have. When Music Man came out with a Stingray with the Sterling neck (i.e., this SLO Special), they combined the best of both worlds. Such a smart move by the company to recognize the desirability of this configuration. I own the SLO Special HS version. The classic Music Man look and sound with a neck that never is a struggle to play. Also, unlike some other brands that put a heavy gloss on the back of the neck (which seems nice at first but turns out to cause terrible "thumb drag"), the Stingray has the awesome wax/oil combination which give Music Man necks that characteristic unfinished wood feel that makes playing all night long effortless and comfortable. Another nice thing about the Stingray compared to the Sterling is that it has more space between the neck pickup and fretboard (and one less fret) so that slapping/popping is easier. This is really the ideal bass and it is highly recommended. It is a bit heavy like all Stingrays, but the comfort you'll experience with the Sterling neck and a nice place to rest your thumb on the dual pickups more than makes up for it.

Great bass but was not set up properly when delivered and pre amp began failing less than a year after purchase. I was blaming my amp until the pre amp completely failed when it was just days over a year old. Contacted Music Man service department, which I discovered was also the sales department and was told I was on my own since the, 1 year, warranty had expired. They offered to sell me a new pre amp after I sent them my defective one. Expensive repair on top of having to get a brand new guitar set up. Not at all happy with Music Man service and quality control but it's a very nice guitar when it works.

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay Slo Special 4 String HH Electric Bass:

Wow, what a thing of beauty! The fit and finish on this instrument are second to none. Love the fact that it came shipped in its own hard case. The SLO neck makes this bass a super fast and easy to play instrument that will make you not want to put it down. Oh, and the tone? Tone is what this thing has in droves. The 3-band Eq and five-position pick-up switch make it easy to emulate any sound, or even create your own. Want to sound like a P-Bass - done. Need that Jaco burp sound - done. Geddy Lee growl - done. A funky slap scoop - done. Like others have said, if you can afford this bass, it is one you need in your arsenal. You won't regret it.

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay Slo Special 4 String HH Electric Bass:

I've been wanting to own an EBMM Stingray for quite sometime, but the handful of them that I have tried just didn't quite fit my smaller hands. This Stingray Slo Special was advertised as having a Sterling neck, which is thinner and faster, so I decided to give this bass a whirl. Boy am I glad I did. It plays like a dream, sounds awesome, and fits me like a glove. I play metal, rock, and country music in three different bands, and this bass can fill the role in all three. And I love the Black Cherry Burst look. If you're on the fence between this bass and another, I'd honestly recommend this one over just about anything else out there (4 string).

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay Slo Special 4 String HH Electric Bass:

First of all thank you Musician's Friend. I had originally purchased the Stingray, "Condition 1" hoping to save money. However, on receiving the guitar, I found it unplayable (fret buzz, intonation out with a bow in the neck). I contacted Musician's Friend and explained the problems with the bass. I asked if they would take it back in exchange for a new Stingray in which I was willing to pay the difference. Without hesitation, they gladly accepted the exchange and offered me a savings on cost. I received the new bass days later and found it to be what was expected. The Stingray SLO Special bass is true. All the features enhance its sound and playabilty. In the past, I purchased a used, "Condition 1" Warwick Bass from Musician's Friend; getting one, if not the best bass guitars I've ever played. The Stingray, in it's own right, is in that category.

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay Slo Special 4 String HH Electric Bass:

I'm somewhat spoiled because I normally play a P/J Fender bass that I built myself out of custom parts, and spent years setting it up. I call it "the beast" and I have yet to pick up a bass off of a music store rack that even came close. Well, after playing it for a few gigs now, I can say this MusicMan comes close. Whether it be rock, funk, country, jazz, or R&B, This bass holds its own. Make no doubt about it - it doesn't sound like the Fender, no matter what posittion you put the pickup selection switch in. But, that's why I bought it - to get all the other sounds that I couldn't get out of the Fender. I always liked the Stingray bodies, but didn't care for the necks. Well, the neck on this Slo Special is different. It's not as narrow as a Fender jazz neck, but it's definitely a more comfortable and faster neck than a Fender P bass or standard Stingray. It came with .045 G string set. That's a tad lighter than I normally use, so Im anxious to see what a .050 G string set will sound like on it. Some players don't like to "funk" on the heavier string sets, but I like the way they sound and play, and have since learned to pop and slap just fine on them. I bet they will sound great on this MusicMan. If they don't, I'll re-post about it. Oh yeah, the one I bought has the maple kneck, and it still sounds fat with a lot of sustain. Plus, it has the crisp attack of a maple neck. It ain't a cheap bass by any means, but it's definitely worth the money. I did a minor amount of tweaking on it out of the box, but other than that, it was ready to go. This might not be the bass you want if you are a beginner or haven't been playing long. But, a seasoned player will really appreciate this bass. And, this one did come with a case.

          Awesome Instrument

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay Slo Special 4 String HH Electric Bass:

I have always wanted a StingRay, but the thickness of the neck kept me from shelling out the bucks. Because of my short fingers I normally play a Jazz Bass, and in the past few years have played an Ibanez sr750 (which is a nice Bass for the money) but this, a StingRay with a slim fast Sterling neck is in a league all its own. Nothing... and I mean nothing sounds like a StingRay. This Bass plays and sounds as good as it looks. I got the Black Cherry Burst and it is Beautiful. Played great right out of the box, needed a very slight adjustment but was almost perfect from the start. If you can afford it, you will not be disappointed.

          AMAZING sound, GREAT versatility

          By Steven Collins

          from Salem, NH

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay Slo Special 4 String HH Electric Bass:

Like many musicians I have been thru a LOT of basses. This will be the last bass I buy. LOVE this bass. I've used Music Man Sterlings in the past (liked the feel and the sound but still just something not there for me). I've been a Music Man guy for years, switched to another bass to change my sound up and it was the biggest mistake I ever made (Won't mention the other brand as it's a great bass just wasn't for me). Wanted the Stingray tone but don't like the thick necks. Problem solved. The Slo Special has the Stingray body and pickups but a thinner Sterling type neck. The double humbuckers adds an amazing amount of versatility. I can get that in your face Stingray sound but also can get a deep dub sound and with coils 2 & 3 on can even get a J Bass tone (but still has the thicker Music Man tone which I LOVE). The neck on this is a Sterling neck (although it seems just a tiny tiny bit wider, I'm assuming to make it fit the Stingray body and pickup poles. I actually like it a little better than the Sterling neck. I HIGHLY recommend this. It's got the classic Stingray tone but so much more which is VERY important if like me you play in a band that has to cover a LOT of musical ground. No need to have multiple basses anymore, this one does it all. This is without a doubt the best bass I have ever owned (and in the past 20 years I've owned at least 14 basses I can remember). I HIGHLY recommend you give this a try, if you want a versatile bass with a modern sound, great feel, great look then check out the Stingray HH Slo Special.

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay Slo Special 4 String HH Electric Bass:

I have owned this bass since July 2011.I have been playing bass guitar for 44 years and usually played a Fender AmericanPrecision or Jazz. I play blues, classic rock, and am doing some Indie rock now. The past five years I have depended on my Fender American Jazz Deluxe which never failed me. I saw this slo special in a Columbus guitar store and tried it out. I couldn't believe the sound of this baby and the neck was awesome. The neck does not have a lacquered finish on it and is really fast and smooth without any drag. I went back home and ordered this in the beautiful color of Black Cherry Sunburst which I had to wait a month since it was backordered in this color. I received it in great shape in a hardshell case and proceeded to unplug my Jazz and hooked this baby up to my Ampeg SVT VR with 8-10 speaker cab and I couldn't believe my ears. This bass rocks and the tone is awesome. All of my bandmates were impressed with the sound and quality of this bass and I am gigging weekly with it. This is my main bass now and I hate to say it but I haven't plucked the old Jazz since.I highly recommend this instrument.
5 band pickup switch is awesome and I love the unlacqured neck. The dual humbuckers speak for themselves.
Beautiful instrumentand neck and frets are great. Intonation up and down the neck is precise right out of the box.
It is an awesome instrument and was well worth it to me.
