The Best Sounding Best Playing Bass out their

By Brendan Halbohm

from Bemus Point, New York

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray 5 HH 5-String Electric Bass:

This Bass is amazing. When I first played it, it played so smoothly and gracefully that I didn't want to put it down. I play it all the time and I can't get enough of it. Ernie Ball MusicMan did a great job in the re-desine and I especially like the Dual pickups

This bass has it all.

By Mokkadi

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray 5 HH 5-String Electric Bass:

I play in a NuMetal band as well as an acoustic group and needed a bass with the right tone and a great B string. I auditioned basses from Modulus, Spector NYC, Sadowsky, MTD USA, Mike Lull, F Bass, Elrick and Lakland before buying this bass. The only one that came close was the Modulus because of the huge B string but I actually found the tone of the Modulus B to be too clean and clear for my music style as well the D and G string popping to sound rather "synthetic". With the 5way pup selecter and dual humbuckers on the stingray I can go from an aggressive grind to a nice warm tone to the honk of a P bass and everywhere between. The 3 band EQ works wonderfully for dialing in your tone and the bass sustains for days. I found the string spacing to be very comfortable for both hands as I play chords as well as walking lines and alot of slap. The B string plays wonderfully and provides a clear and deep tone all over the fretboard. If you've ever been told that you need a 35" scale for a good B string you need to play this bass and realize that there are exceptions to everything. The finish and feel of this instrument are top notch and the build quality is superb. I have been playing for over 15 years and have owned over 20 basses from Warwick to Ibanez to Lakland and this bass beats them all. You need only look to the list of pros that use these to see the versatility.... from Linkin Park to Biohazard to Red Hot Chili Peppers to the great Tony Levin of Peter Gabriel these basses deliver time and time again. To sum up my review..... If this bass were stolen today I would order another one tomorrow.

great all around value

By Jon McCormick

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray 5 HH 5-String Electric Bass:

I am 35 years playing bass, and have owned just about every brand you can spend money on- purchased a Stingray V fretless H/Piezo last year and was overall extremely satisfied with the product. I decided to add a fretted bass and now have just taken delivery of a new Stingray V HH, rosewood fingerboard. There is a huge variety of sounds in this bass, the HH is much improved in my opinion over the single pickup bass. Quality of construction is excellent, it feels solid and plays great. I play primarily jazz and funk, and I can't see how these two basses would fail to do the job. Thumbs up to the people at Musicman for putting together such a nice bass for such a reasonable price.

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray 5 HH 5-String Electric Bass:

I spl ordered mine through GC San Marcos. The 4 month wait was worth it. This 2PU SR5 offers so many tone options including the classic Ray sound. Music Man quality is top notch and GC's service is A+!

Effortless

By Matt

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray 5 HH 5-String Electric Bass:

I love this axe. Picked it up a few weeks ago and I feel like I've been playing it for years. I've got it set-up just the way I like it and it plays so smooth and effortlessly. Great tone. The positives are too many to mention -- 5-way pickup selector, built-in preamp with fully sweepable EQ for treble, mids and lows, perfect workmanship and attention to detail and a classic shape. I also love the unfinished maple neck. I give it 4 stars only because it is very heavy. This thing easily weighs 20% more than my Fender J. My shoulder and upper back start feeling the pain after 30 minutes of playing. I highly suggest a 3" strap! Also, it's got a lot less room for popping -- you have to make sure you hook your pinky exactly between the pickups, otherwise you'll jam-up between the enormous pickups and the G string.

StingRay 5HH

By Roger Cathey

from Lawrenceburg, TN

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray 5 HH 5-String Electric Bass:

Bought my first Music Man bass a couple of months ago.I like the True Gold color and the looks and feel of the maple fretboard. I also like the tones that the double humbuckers produce and it has stronger highs than my previous bass. The strings seem to flex a little more than I like when picking between the pickups. When moving back to find a more stable position I find myself playing on top of the rear pickup, and moving back any farther makes it uncomfortable. Hopefully I'll find the Spot or just be able to adjust. Also the unfinished neck is very finicky when it comes to temperture and humidity change. Needless to say that I find myself adjusting the neck quite often. Other then these things it's a pretty good guitar.

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray 5 HH 5-String Electric Bass:

I was a die hard Lakland 5 string player. Loved the playability, but every one I owned I was constantly changing pickups and electronics to find the right tone, which for me came down to the Stingray punch. I stayed away from the 5 string Rays as 1)I thought the 17.5mm spacing was too narrow, and 2)I didn't like the look of the pickguard compared to the oval on my 4 string.

After constantly comparing every bass to my 4 string Ray I decided to bit the bullet and try it. WOW! I found a used 5 HH India Ivory with matching headstock and pearloid pickguard. Stunning, and on this bass I even love the pickguard. Tone for days. I thought the HH spacing would bother me, but I quickly got used to it and switch back and forth with my 4 string no issue. Feel of the neck is just perfect.

Now back to the tone...this is one bass where I won't be changing any electronics. I find I just have to tweak the eq for the room, then use the 5 position switch as my "tone" control. right now I love the first position for classic Ray tone, slap, and pick. 2nd position single coils is probably my go to for almost everything else. Jazz bass on steroids for me. Clean, clear, and punchy. Great clarity on lows and highs.

My sound guy told me this is his new favorite bass. Sits great in the mix, and he can easily tweak it from the board.

This is a keeper! Makes me smile every time I play it, and the Ray tone is killer.

The Best!

By Jeremy R.

from Hendersonville, TN

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray 5 HH 5-String Electric Bass:

Well after years of being in the dark I finally purchased my first Music Man, and let me tell ya, everything i heard was true. The feel is so smooth and easy to maneuver and the sound is incredible. Great thumps and awesome growls. The volume is great, which was a problem for me on the previously owned Ibanez SR305, and i love the tone, awesome thumps with great growl. Also, not that it has anything to do with the sound, the graphite pearl finish with rosewood fretboard is beautiful. it's been 2 weeks and so far i'm completely satisfied!

Perfect Bass

By Mark

from Chicago, IL

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray 5 HH 5-String Electric Bass:

This is the perfect bass. I have played pretty much every type of bass out there, and none have all the wonderful qualities of this bass. Tone is very scooped, thick, tight, fat and crisp, and the low B hits with the punch of the rest of the strings. Most other basses don't do well at that. The feel is so smooth and natural, with great action and playability. Look is sleek, with lots of color options. Craftsmanship is absolutely perfect, MusicMan is known for this and for good reason. Price is exactly right. I bought this bass knowing it would cost a lot, but also knew that I was paying for a top-notch professional-level bass: which is what I needed. Overall, this bass delivers exactly what you would expect for an instrument at this price level. You honestly cannot buy better quality, and if you choose to spend a little more on a more expensive brand bass, you are probably only paying for aesthetics or just plain overpaying.

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray 5 HH 5-String Electric Bass:

If you are reading this review, thinking of purchasing this bass and haven't yet, please stop reading this and GO BUY ONE...stop reading... seriously... This bass is so clean and tigh recording and live you are messing with a BIG sound! A lot of people buy cheaper basses and cycle through them over the years. Unless you need to sell this for fast cash, you will keep this the rest of your life! Don't waste your money on anything else, unless it's the single humbucker, those are still sick too and a little cost efficient.

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray 5 HH 5-String Electric Bass:

By far the best choice, and change, I have made in a long time. Loved fender never parted since the 70's, I think I may have dated myself, but nevertheless, this bass plays just as good, if not better. It definitely has more sound diversity with the 5 point switch and the three knob eq. I can make this bass sound like a P, or J bass, and then have more flexibility to shape it way more. The sound options are really endless.

Couldn't be more happy with my choice!

Don't Let the Price Intimidate You

        By Java Luna

        from Albuquerque, NM

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray 5 HH 5-String Electric Bass:

This is a truly fantastic bass. The feel is great and the action is as smooth as butter. I'm still trying to find that perfect tone, but there are such great varieties you can get from it. I, at one point, got the tone of an upright out of it, and it sounded amazing. The only problem I ever really have with it is my cord comes out occassionally and I get a nasty feedback from it. I think that's just the cord though. I played on an Ibanez GSR200 before and I can say that I did note a huge difference. Playing the StingRay is just so much easier, and you can work around the neck faster than I could with the Ibanez. Over all, it is definately worth the money.

I have played this bass for the last month and I must say that it is the best one I have ever played. It is just effortless to play and it seems as though I never want to put it down. This is my first Music Man and I don't know how I ever done without it in the past. I have played Fender, Copley, and Warwick and they just don't compare to me.

This is one awesome bass! I chose the Stealth Black and it just rocks head to toe, Humbucker to Humbucker! I can get countless tones with the 5 position switch. It is so loud that we started getting noise complaints when we practice. Everyone thats heard can has said its sounds crazy good. It plays fantastic. Best bass investment I've made in a long time.

        Phenomenal bass

        By Mike Flowers

        from Knoxville

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray 5 HH 5-String Electric Bass:

My first "good" bass was a Music Man Stingray that I bought new in 1978 (I still have it). I continued to exclusively play MM and accumulated several more Rays (and a Cutlass) over the years. I started playing Alembics a few years ago, but when I made the change to 5-string I was really having a hard time finding an instrument with a good "B". I traded a really nice 4 string Alembic Balance K for a 5 string Balance K, but I just couldn't get comfortable with the instrument. I was browsing in GC and picked-up SR5 HH and was blown away. Fist off, the B string felt GREAT and the neck didn't feel like the flight-deck of an aircraft carrier. Secondly, the HH PUP configuration was revealing. I had gotten used to 2 PUP configurations with my Alembics, but all my MMs has been single PUP. The conjecture that the Stingray is a tonal "1 trick pony" just is not the case with the addition of a neck PUP. The 5 position switch gives you single coil tones as well as the typical HB growl. It really has me wondering why I ever strayed away in the first place and what to do with the Alembics that are now just "wall candy".

        Perfect sound and fast action

        By Paulo

from Rio de Janeiro, RJ (Brazil)

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray 5 HH 5-String Electric Bass:

It was a tough decision between the MusicMan Stingray 5 HH and the MusicMan Stingray 5 (single humbucking). When I took this bass for a test drive at the store I found out that the second humbucking is a bit too close to the neck. Although that is a good thing when you are looking for a different sounding from a MusicMan, it kind of gets in the way of slapping. It is not that troublesome, but it gets some "get used to it" before you can really start slapping like a monster. What I like about the HH version is that you can get the real MusicMan sound (by using the pickup switch selector and choosing the coils close to the bridge) but you can also get some other very interesting sounds by chosing other coils combinations. The neck itself is fast. I mean, they have built it in such a way that your hand feel so comfortable that you even forget you are doing some real workout for your fingers! Fast licks or fast slaps, mute notes, harmonics, whatever you wish to, you will get in a easy and perfect way. Also, I really enjoy the crisp highs and mids you can get with this bass. Don't be foolished and think you will not get that deep loud bass as well (you do get the deep loud bass too... this bass can growl!!!) but you will get a more clean and crispy high and mid than any other bass I have tested. I own a Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass as well, and I can say that those are two very different basses. I cannot say that one is better than the other because they have different purposes and can be used for different styles and techniques. Definitely it is worth to pay the price for this bass. Well built, perfect sounding, beautiful finish, fast neck, love the pickup switch selector. In just a few words: buy this bass and you won't regret it! :-)
