Slinky bass strings featuring an enamel coating that prevents decay, increases the life of the strings, and offers a slightly warmer sound than non-coated strings.

Gauges: 50-70-85-105

These Ernie Ball Slinky Coated Bass Strings offer extended life and great playability. An ultra-thin layer of Ernie Ball's exclusive enamel coating protects the strings and preserves their bright sound, while retaining the natural feel of uncoated strings.

This micro-thin layer of exclusive enamel coating prevents decay and corrosion up to five times longer than an uncoated set of strings. Ed Friedland, the "Bass Whisperer," had a chance to take a sneak peak at a few of their coated bass sets and had this to say: "The coated string sounds virtually identical to the non-coated; it's not until I move back to the bridge and dig in that you can hear the slightly warmer character. The string has the detailed mids and full bottom you want from nickel, and an upper midrange presence that will get you heard amidst thrashing guitars and crashing cymbals. Bottom line: if you already dig Ernie Ball Slinkys, you'll dig the coated version—and you'll dig them for longer. If you prefer the sound of nickel strings after they've broken in, these coated replacement bass strings will give you that sound straight out of the pack."

  • Disappointing

Like many people who buy coated strings, I buy them because I wanted them to last longer than non-coated strings. If you're thinking about buying these, then you may as well buy the regular, non-coated Ernie Ball's and save your money. In the past, I have used Elixir's that have lasted between 3 and 6 months. These lasted a whopping month. They started off with a metallic graded sound, especially with a pick, darkened to the perfect tone that I was looking for which lasted a few days, and then steadily progressed to being dead and thuddy . . . actually not a bad blues bass tone. I play with a pick about 15% of the time. The coating where I used the pick wore off in 3 weeks. The coating above the fret wires was completely worn away in a month's time. The coating on the tops of the strings along the fingerboard was still intact, though. These strings also didn't have that "weird" feeling the Elixir's have. I was expecting for these strings to retain a lively tone for at least two or three months. Having to change them after a month was really disappointing.

  • Not as advertised!

As reviewed by Ron on 4/19/2010

I tried these strings in an effort to find a longer lasting bass string. I had used Elixirs and had good luck with those. The Ernie Ball coated strings were a disappointment. Faded fast and lasted no longer than regular, non-coated strings. Considering the higher cost, there is no reason to go to these! Ernie Ball, go back to the lab and try again!
