I wanted to love this bass so much. I had been waiting for 9 months from when I first saw it in the trades. Do not get me wrong, I love the way it plays and sounds but the oil finish looks much better in the pictures than in person. The oil finish version of the T-Bird Pro has more of an unfinished look than an oil finish. The neck and the cut away edges are very rough to the look and to the touch. The roughness of the neck makes it almost unplayable. I plan to return it and trade it for the Sunburst finish model. Bottom line: Love the bass but not the finish.

Comments about Epiphone Thunderbird Pro-IV Bass:

I got this bass yesterday and it is great. I love the sound I get from it. I also like the thinner body so it is easier to play. If you want a good thunderbird go and get this one.

Comments about Epiphone Thunderbird Pro-IV Bass:

Great sounding! Very easy to play. Nice and smooth feeling.Run it through a Line 6 Bass floor Pod, and you have a nice rig! My house is too small to play it through my 200 Watt sunn amp, but i'll try it sometime.

Comments about Epiphone Thunderbird Pro-IV Bass:

Gave this bass to myself as a Christmas present. Great look, great sounds, fast neck. A few issues-a wire wasn't connected inside the bass and needed repair (I still get some pops and buzz on occasion), the battery for the active electronics goes pretty fast and the tuning pegs are pretty cheap. NOTE: the only bass case that will fit this guitar is the Epi Thunderbird case. Overall, good value for the money. This is a great complement to my Stingray and Geddy Lee. Love the long scale.

Comments about Epiphone Thunderbird Pro-IV Bass:

I've only plugged this bass into my amp once and I can already tell it sounds great. I've been playing it unplugged and the way that it plays is unbelievable. You can really hear and feel the sustain on it. I'd give it 6 stars if I could.

Almost Perfect , But , Not Quite

By CURTIS BROWN

from Tucker Georgia

Comments about Epiphone Thunderbird Pro-IV Bass:

I traded my EPI. T-Bird IV in on the T-Bird Pro IV (sunburst) a few days ago . The only thing I did not like about the T-Bird IV , were the cheap Passive Pickups . I was considering changing pickups , but , found it less expensive to buy a brand new guitar . The active pickups on this Bass , are night and day compared to the other T-Bird . Much more responsive and they just look better . The Bass I saw online , had a black border around the edge of the sunburst . My T-Bird came only with a darker brown border . At first , I was a little miffed about that , but , I actually think it looks even better like that . I have never owned an through body neck guitar before , so I didn't know what to expect . The neck is very comfortable and fast . The guitar came with the action high , but not unplayable . With a little tweaking to the Truss Rod and the intonation , with new strings , this guitar is ready to Rock . It will take me some time to get to know all the tones this guitar has . Believe me when I say , There are many , many different tones to this guitar . The only reason I did not give this guitar 5 stars , is , the finish on my guitar has a very minor flaw in one area . You can't see it when you look from a short distance , but , up close is a different story . It is minor , so , I can live with it . Very happy with my purchase . Would I reccomend it to others . Yes , yes , yes .

Comments about Epiphone Thunderbird Pro-IV Bass:

Ever since I saw the first glimpse of Shavo Odadjian holding this bass about 8 years ago I was always inspired to play bass. When I saw this bass in all its glory in the shop, I was so stoked. Plays great, and I recommend it for all players, beginner or professionals alike.

Dont listen to the others.

By Kies Graham

Comments about Epiphone Thunderbird Pro-IV Bass:

I recently bought this bass, its great. For some reason everyone on here thinks that it is 'top heavy', its not. This bass is perfect. You can play anything on this bass. The active pick-ups put the icing on the cake. This bass is attractive, and plays very well. I would recommend this bass to any one, beginners to experts. And you cant beat the price for this quality of bass.

Great Value, Great Sound & Great Looks

By DANIEL WALITS

from Montville, NJ

Comments about Epiphone Thunderbird Pro-IV Bass:

I own several Epiphone Basses (Vintage Rivoli and Accu Bass and have played bass on and off for over 40 years. The quality of the Thunderbird Pro is excellent. On close examination, I have to say Epiphone has a great quality control program. The construction and finish of this bass is excellent. I purchased the Sunburst last month and it is beautiful, just like a fine piece of quality furniture. Action is great, no buzzing, the active pickups & built in EQ gives you a great variety of sounds and styles. Strap buttons are designed to avoid the dreaded "Neck Dive". It is hefty in weight but not overly so. I play a Hofner Club Bass for the 60's sounds, R&B and Blues. The Thunderbird really is at home for that heavy Rock Sound from the 70's & 80's. It has that Punch and Sock! They always say, "You get what you pay for". In this case, you do but you definitely get a LOT more! I suggest getting the Sunburst as it is really a beautiful instrument.

Never Again

By Don Wilhite

from Eugene Oregon

Comments about Epiphone Thunderbird Pro-IV Bass:

What started out as a truly hopeful experience, ended with me wondering where to place the fault,on Epiphone for a poor finish a faulty electronics,on Guitar Center for poor customer service policies,or on myself for trusting that I would get what I paid for in the condition advertised. I bought the Epiphone Thunderbird Pro 4 in expectation of the next level of my bass playing experience, sadly the finish was poor and far below what I had with other Thunderbirds and the blend pot simply did nothing, unknown to me before I even left the store enough packaging and boxes where removed to make my new bass nonreturnable,so in the end, shame on Epiphone for bad quality control, shame on Guitar Center for selling me a Demo or returned bass as new,and shame on me for trusting them both,so I guess my next level of bass playing will be learning how to refinish the body and install new electronics and finding a real guitar shop

make your own version of the thunderbird pro IV

By DENNIS BATDORF

from chicago, il

Comments about Epiphone Thunderbird Pro-IV Bass:

i ordered my thunderbird online which i hate to do!! mine came with a perfect black finnish! its a great bass if you leave it as is. i already own a thunderbird goth bass which has great tone and is a heavy hitter! but as with all my basses i rework to my own specs. so true to me as soon as i received the tb pro IV iI installed a kahler 4210 whammy bar, rotosound .035 to .085 strings and a new nut!! this sucker has the wow factor now! its the only bass that i could find that really has enough body stock on it to put the kahler, and the bridge on the pro IV is ideal to replace with the kahler. it is no longer just a cool bass guitar, its a four string lead!! i play through 5 amps set up as three seperate channels. the kustom amps are two hv100thd with 4 4x12 cabs, one kg100 and 4x12 cab, vintage kustom 200 bass amp and vintage kustom 250a lead amp! so it rocks with 20x12, 3x15 and a horn at 750 watts with effects pedals! but you do have to buy the the case for it. it will not fit in case for the goth! this is bigger! weight distribution is better on this model since they moved the strap buttons! i do get a hum once in a while as most have complained, but thats the nest project to do this!!

One Fine Epi

By KENNETH WALCOTT

Comments about Epiphone Thunderbird Pro-IV Bass:

I just got my Epiphone Pro IV Bass Vintage Sunburst. I had them install Thomastik JF344 Flatwounds on it. They set the guitar up at the Boardman Store. The tone, sound & action is unbeleavable. I also have a 65 or 66 Original Hofner. Two very different but fantastic guitars. Hats off to everyone at the Boardman Store especially to Miles & Steve for putting the finishing touch on one great guitar.

Looks great, feels wonderful, sounds awesome!

By Joseph Dressler

from allentown pa

Comments about Epiphone Thunderbird Pro-IV Bass:

I've wanted a Thunderbird forever and finally ordered a Pro IV in natural oil from Guitar Center. Well, it turned out to be even nicer than I'd hoped for. As others mentioned it's active instead of passive, but this isn't a minus, it's a plus because you can get a lot of different sounds out of this...try it with an Ibanez Promethean or your favorite amp and a Hartke Bass Attack an Eden WT preamp pedal or an MXR M80 and leave all the passive vs active talk for the same purists who think bass players shouldn't use picks, when everyone knows some of the best bass players do. Another thing I really like about this T-bird is the unfinished neck...it's incredibly smooth, and since I've added a set of Guild flatwound strings this bass almost plays itself! Finally, the Thunderbird has always been one of the coolest looking bass guitars ever made and the natural oil one even looks good hanging in its stand...the black hardware is a really nice touch. Buy one of these and be the envy of all your musician friends...but be prepared to let them all try it out because that's what happens to me every time there's a get together.

Comments about Epiphone Thunderbird Pro-IV Bass:

The bass I received was very nice from a physical/mechanical standpoint. The fit and finish was flawless. The tuners were smooth and worked well. It played well, and the neck and bridge were set up properly. The design of the neck and body are are solid and comfortable to play. The neck design with the alternating walnut and maple makes for a very nice looking instrument. I loved this bass until I plugged it in.

The bass that I received had a very bad problem with pickup of interference through the air - resulting in humming, buzzing, etc. (The technical terminology for this is that it had a high susceptibility to radiated electromagnetic interference. I am an electrical engineer and have done some work in this field.) It intermittently had the problem even while I kept my hand on the strings, with multiple known-good cords, 3 different amps, different locations, etc. The noise varied as I moved around and pointed the Thunderbird in different directions. It was there with the tone controls flat (on the detents). It was much noisier than my other guitars with humbucking pickups (two Les Pauls and a Washburn HB35) in the same place, using the same amps and cords. The venue where I play (church) is an electrically noisy environment, and it was basically unusable there. The sound also cut out on me a couple of times.

I took it to Guitar Center. The tech probed around in the electronics cavity, and didn't find any problems. Interestingly, it wasn't noisy while at Guitar Center. GC may be careful with their lighting, etc. to have a low noise environment, or it was just luck.

According to online reviews and forums, this symptom is not uncommon with this model. I don't know if they are all this way (poor design), or if this was just a common defect.

I returned mine, and exchanged it for the lower model (passive). It is great - no noise at all, and still pretty nice.

I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend who had an Epiphone Thunderbird years ago but had to sell it. He's in love with it, and so am I! This thing is so lightweight and it feels like they scaled it down from the original. My hands are super small but love large bodied guitars like the Firebird so to have one a little smaller is a godsend. Probably the only con I have is that the colors are not as bright as the picture shows, the sunburst comes out a little darker than expected.

After a while standing you Will feel it. It's perfect for studio or home play. I haven't stopped playing with it since i picked it up.
