Overview

The Epiphone SST Studio is a steel-string acoustic-electric guitar that combines electric and acoustic technology with state-of-the-art construction techniques. This is a guitar that has virtually nothing in common with anything else on the market. In fact, the Epiphone SST guitar doesn't even have a sound hole. It's easy to get sidetracked by the stunning visuals of the new SST Studio Guitar”from the ebony finish to the hourglass curves”this is one of the best-looking guitars Epiphone has ever released.

Unlike traditional acoustic guitars that feature hollow bodies that are susceptible to feedback, the Epiphone SST combines a solid mahogany body with computer-designed sound chambers, the active SST Studio preamp and a NanoFlex pickup designed in cooperation with Shadow Germany. Not a piezo, the unique flexible sensing material in the pickup features integrated active electronics and picks up not only string vibration but also top and body vibrations without the harshness of piezos. The result is a guitar that delivers natural acoustic tone in any situation and at any volume with the only squeals coming from the front row of the moshpit. The Epiphone SST Studio Guitar is not just capable of mind-blowing acoustic tone at high volumes without feedback. The SST Studio preamp features a built-in headphone amp that allows you to plug ordinary headphones into the 1/4" output jack for late-night hotel room inspiration.

The Epiphone SST Studio is equipped with a SlimTaper mahogany neck, a smooth 24-fret rosewood fingerboard, and acoustic steel strings. Once you've picked the SST Studio guitar up, you'll never put it down. Like all Epiphones, the hardware is built with working musicians in mind and includes premium gold Grover machine heads for rock-solid tuning accuracy and stability and a solid rosewood reverse-belly bridge with compensated saddle. The Epiphone SST Studio is the complete acoustic-electric guitar package at the right price.

I love this guitar... although I bought it as a "blem" some paint was chipped off, the guitar sounds amazing. Ofcourse like any guitar you need to adjust it to your needs, I haven't played a guitar from the factory that was good. I plug this baby straight into the PA system and get an amazing sound (JBL's). Sorry to hear that not everybody share's my view.

The Epiphone SST Studio is a good value for beginning guitarists, but it has its limitations. I've had this guitar for a year now and i can say by experience that this guitar can get the job done. It has served me well as a back up guitar, but leaves me wanting more from the standout features. First of all, you may have to put a little work into the SST before you get your tone down. In my case, I feel that the preamp is insufficient. I have to keep the volume all the way up to get any good sound. Onboard EQ is limited to two simple bass and treble sliders. Since I plug into an acoustic amp and use the headphone from there, the headphone amp included with the SST is never ever used. Another item that i had to replace was the input jack. After being broken in, the guitar as giving out a little hum and as it got worse i just had to take it out and put a clean one in. All this being said, the guitar sounds great. The visual effect is tremendous, as well. Gold hardware stands out nicely and the flat top is easy to polish.

Don't be misled.

Comments about Epiphone SST Studio Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have been playing guitar since the 60's. I had purchased the black sst studio, in hopes of eliminating my 4" thick Yahama Country Jumbo. While the sst IS a beautiful guitar, it doesn't behave well with the onboard Preamp/controls. I always have to fine-tune it by: leaving the volume to a selected position, and turning down the treble and bass, then tweaking My Marshall amp. If I attempt to use only the controls to play, the sound of a High Fretwire begins. Since I work on guitars for myself, and others, I have checked the fretwires for low/high areas---The sound is within the guitar---and one cannot easily perform a wire check..... the guitar is entirely without access cavities...one solid/glued piece of wood........no wonder Chet didn't use it much. besides, for a guy like me with longer fingers--the (only) 1 11/16 inch nut isn't that great for fingerpicking.

Neat guitar.

Comments about Epiphone SST Studio Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This guitar sounds pretty good run through my acoustic amp. Although I could see how one would get use out of the headphone feature--I personally got no use out of it. Neat guitar. I used this guitar as a backup when I play live. My biggest complaint is the weight. This thing will put a crick in your neck if used for a while.

Needed a quiet guitar for my condo

By Tom Beaudreau

from North Oxford, MA

Comments about Epiphone SST Studio Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I am enjoying my 49th years as a guitar player. I own a condo, where everyone complains. I work weird hours and I have had many complaints about playing my other acoustic guitar at night or early morning hours. I needed something that was more personal. I came across the Epiphone SST Studio and it was the answer to my needs. I can play/practice at any hour of the day or night without bothering anybody, all I have to do is plug into my headphones or my recorder / mixer, etc and play away. It is a true Hybrid because not only can I play quietly alone, it's has INCREDIBLE tone at live performances with my band or solo. The preamp has incredible power, I havn't been ever able to crank it fully, there's been no need to do that. Very clean tone, very playable, the 1.68" nut width is a great width for a neck, not too wide, not too narrow. Tunes very well, very sharp looking guitar.

I love this Epiphone SST!

By Kevin Klimek

Comments about Epiphone SST Studio Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I really can't believe this guitar sells for the low price that it does, given all it's features. I've been playing for a living since 1964 and a lot of guitars have passed through my hands. The finish is flawless and gorgeous; I have the natural. The wine finish on sides and back have always been a favorite of mine since my first Melody Maker. The tuners are quality and precise. If you're looking for a genuine big box acoustic sound, you will not get it with this guiar, but please be logical...you're playing a chambered guitar with a sealed top so how could it sound like a genuine acoustic? I bought it looking for a reasonable steel string sound without the boominess and acoustic feedback of a regular acoustic and..Epiphone NAILED IT. Fit and finish all great. The reasons I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars are these: 1) the lack of a mid-range slider on the controls 2)volume, bass and treble sliders are very close together making it a bit tricky to make quick adjustments during a performance. 3)Lack of a strap pin for the neck end. I realize everyone has different preferences for the pin, but at least Epi could have included one in the box. Other than these minor nitpicks, I am thoroughly satisfied with the build quality AND feedback free sound of this guitar. No home should be without one. I would DEFINITELY buy at least one more if I ever lost mine!

Hands down, worth every penny!

By Kevin

Comments about Epiphone SST Studio Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've been playing pro since 1964 and have had more than my share of guitars over the years. If someone had blindfolded me and told me I was playing a guitar that sold for $1,000.00 I would have believed them. It's unbelievable that this guitar sells for less in my book! To be sure I'm reviewing the same guitar others have, this IS the SST with the Shadow electronics in it. Anyway, to move on: The sound is ultra clear and extremely even in volume on every string with no dead spots discernible anywhere on the fingerboard. My only minor nitpick was the absence of the strap pin but I've since installed that. I've ran this guitar into my amp and also direct to the board (effects pedals in between) and it sounds awesome. I can crank the volume to any level and there's zero feedback. Some have complained about boominess. That's what the sliders on the preamp controls are for. No issue here. The neck has a nice meaty feel to it and the guitar's sustain is awesome. Price wise, this is the cheapest guitar I've ever played on my show but it is my main squeeze for steel string acoustic duties now. I've never owned an Epiphone in my life prior to this, but if the build quality on their other models is this good, I'd recommend their guitars to anyone, beginner or advanced players alike. If something happened to this guitar, I would need to replace it as soon as possible. Oh...and Guitar Center...hats off to you for very quick and well packed shipping.

I bought this as a Christmas present to myself. I really enjoy playing this guitar. It plays with the feel of an electric guitar with the sounds of an acoustic. Sleek design, smooth neck and great tone. I highly recommend this to any player beginner to experienced.

SST Studio

By RJ

Comments about Epiphone SST Studio Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Great idea, bad execution. I ordered the SST Studio and waited over a month for it to arrive. Everything was fine except the pickup. Took it back to GC and ordered another. The second one also had a bad pickup. A little QC by Gibson would help. Love the idea, but 2 strikes and you are out. I don't have time for 3.

Great Guitar for the Price

By Nathan

from Calhoun, Ga

Comments about Epiphone SST Studio Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Great guitar I can't believe it only cost 349.00 it's worth every penny. I purchased it to be a back up guitar when I was leading worship but I have decided to just change it back and forth. My other Guitar is a Taylor 312ce, which does have a better sound than the SST but the SST does hold its own for being such a cheaper guitar. Only thing I don't like about the SST is that it is heavy compared to the guitars that I normally play. Over all I love the guitar and would very much suggest it.
