I've had great luck with this solid, unpretentious beginner's guitar. This is just as, if not more reliable than the much more expensive "serious" guitars I've owned. Everything about it feels great. It's a light but sturdy guitar you won't feel guilty about putting through a little punishment. Unlike some other reviewers, mine has extraordinarily good tuners. it hardly ever goes flat or sharp, even after very heavy strumming. the input jack is chintzy, like all budget guitars, but replacing it runs you twenty to forty bucks at a reputable shop. As far as electronics go, the pick-ups are fair. the open coils are nice and bright, but put out plenty of noise. The instrument's weakness is its lack of tonal versatility. It only does one sound well: hard rock. that's (partially) the result of having only one tone knob. This is an excellent no-frills beginner's guitar, and a reliable mid-range one for an unbelievable value. F*@$ Squier!

I Got this guitar (used) as my first electric guitar, had a Rogue RD80 Acoustic before. I was a bit low on money, so buying this guitar seemed like the best decision. I have to say, I was not disappointed when I finally plugged this guitar into my amp. For the price, this guitar has a really muddy, hard rock or metal sound which I absolutely loved. Would have given it a higher rating if the stock pickups held up better. A while ago I was practicing with it and the bridge pickup completely fell apart, and I had to have a guitar center employee fix it. It still plays surprisingly well after the experience though. I have gotten more professionally made guitars since then, but I still use this one for down-tuned stuff (because down-tuning a guitar with a Floyd-Rose trem is a pain). I would maybe recommend this guitar to a beginner or someone in a band who needs a cheap, good sounding guitar ASAP.

Amazing Guitar

By SGRocker24

from Edwardsville, IL

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

The Epiphone SG Special is the perfect beginner to intermediate guitar. This was the first guitar i got a few years back and still plays like the day i got it. It has a very fat tone with the two humbuckers. You can play basically any style of music with it. I gave it a 4 for features because it only has 1 volume and 1 tone knob. Other than that, this is a very solid guitar.

Smooth playing

By EppyGibson Fan in VA

from Virginia Beach

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar a couple of months ago to go along with my Epiphone Les Paul Special II. The fretting is smooth and it fits just right. You get all of the features of a Gibson SG at a low price. I have been playing guitar for only six months now but this guitar makes me feel a lot more comfortable. This guitar will prep me well for when I graduate (financially) to a Gibson.

Great guitar for money

By nsk56

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

Knowing I wont be able to spend much on a guitar, I didn't have high expectations for this guitar. But, after playing it for about a month, WOW!! The neck pickup sounds great, it has a real heavy sound. I think this guitar sounds best when played clean, with the neck pickup. It has a great acoustic tone. You dont get a pickguard with it, but they are easy to buy, and I have one on my SG. Also think about switching the machine heads out, they feel cheap and insubstantial. But otherwise, great guitar!!!

Great Guitar! Excellent Value!

By Or Bairey

from New Rochelle, NY

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

This is my second guitar, and I must say I'm extremely pleased with it. Visually, It's beautiful, I recommend the Red/Cherry color, it's vibrant and looks great if you install a black full pickguard. The pickups are fantastic, overall the sound can range from bluesy and jazz to heavy metal. The frets are really great, this thing'll resonate forever. It stays in tune reasonably long, just don't bang the tuning knobs on anything and you'll be fine. Overall it's fantastic. I'm very satisfied with it. Side note: It sounds really great with the Fender FrontMan 25R Amp.

Great for both beginners and intermediates

By Ben

from Nashville, TN

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

I went to Guitar Center and bought this guitar because I play slide and have noticed that a lot of the expert slide guitar players use the SG. The pickups are great quality, although I am thinking about puting some Gibson 57 humbuckers on it to get closer to a Gibson sound. Everything about the guitar is great. It stays in tune most of the time and plays well. The only thing it is lacking is a pickguard but putting on a Gibson SG 1961 Reissue pickguard would fix this. It plays Blues and Rock very well. This guitar is good for both beginners and intermediates. It is well worth the money.

My first love

By V. G.

from Elkhart

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

For a while I wanted to play the guitar so I went to the store and looked around for about three hours holding looking and strumming all kinds of guitars I finally decided to spend only 160 bucks on my frist guitar so I looked at some more then, i seen the special sg and grabbed it it was light had a great clean sound and looked cool so i bought it, took it home and havent put it down since, it does lack customization of tone but thats fine as long you have a good amp. Its been a month since i bought it and it still sounds brand new I love playing it and it is great for the cash. this is my first guitar and I don't think i'll be getting rid of it any time soon.

very nice guitar!!

By Trashton Porter

from Seffner,Fl.

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

I am 53 & have been playing guitar & recording since I was 10 years old. I picked up this guitar the other day because I needed another "beater" guitar in the studio. I plugged into a 5 watt Fender "Vibro Champ Xd". To my surprise the SG Special, played like butter!! I was freaked! The action is to die for. There was slight fret buzz. I raised the bridge very slightly. Intonation was a bit off so I set it. The tuning keys could be better, however I played very hard for over an hour and amazingly only #1 & #2 strings were slightly out of tune. The pickup selector switch & control knobs are less than desirable but cheap to replace (if so inclined). I would recommend this guitar to any level player that needs an excellent guitar for a super cheap price. I am happily gigging with this guitar on Memorial Day weekend. I will leave my Gibson 335 safely tucked away in the studio.. So buy an SG Special! If you find it difficult to play practice, practice , practice... It ain't the guitar.
