I've had great luck with this solid, unpretentious beginner's guitar. This is just as, if not more reliable than the much more expensive "serious" guitars I've owned. Everything about it feels great. It's a light but sturdy guitar you won't feel guilty about putting through a little punishment. Unlike some other reviewers, mine has extraordinarily good tuners. it hardly ever goes flat or sharp, even after very heavy strumming. the input jack is chintzy, like all budget guitars, but replacing it runs you twenty to forty bucks at a reputable shop. As far as electronics go, the pick-ups are fair. the open coils are nice and bright, but put out plenty of noise. The instrument's weakness is its lack of tonal versatility. It only does one sound well: hard rock. that's (partially) the result of having only one tone knob. This is an excellent no-frills beginner's guitar, and a reliable mid-range one for an unbelievable value. F*@$ Squier!

On December 25 08, i got this guitar and i thought it was the greatest guitar in the world. I now realize that I am better than what this guitar offers me, it needs new pickups to start with. this guitar was pretty good for starters just learning the properties of the axe. I highly recommend this guitar for early risers! keep on rockin'!!

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

The ultimate practice guitar. Comfortable thin neck, light weight thin body -you can play it for hours. It also has great sustain, so you can play it with out an amp. Extremely well built. Good tuners. I own several guitars, this is a keeper. I bought this several months ago and this is my go to machine when I know I have to hit the woodshed.

The only change I made was to put 9's on it o make it even easier to play for long periods of time, and just lower the action a hair.

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

I've ordered from Guitar Center many times, but this was the first time I has a product delivered to a store instead of my home. I picked it up and it was perfect out of the box. I've always had to have any new guitar setup, but this one did not need anything done to it, not even tuning. I have a feeling the store did a setup for me, but I've not been back yet to ask. I'm extremely happy, and my son loves it. The tone is great, the weight is perfect, and it plays like silk. I've been playing it when my son isn't home more than my Gibson Les Paul and any of my Fenders. It's a great instrument.

The neck plays great, feels good in your hands.
The weight is comfortable, relatively light for a solid body.
The sound is powerful without a lot of noise.
What more can you ask for, for under $200?

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar as a Christmas gift in 2014 and totally fell in love with it. It needed a good setup when I took the guitar out the box but nothing major. From a beginner's point of view it sounded nice but as I got better I noticed there was something wrong. The pickups were bad. The neck pickup was too muddy and had no clarity. Everything sounded like mush. The bridge pickup was too "fuzzy" there also wasn't any clarity. The clean sound on both pickups sounded dry and brittle. Both pickups played together sounded decent. This is a good beginners guitar and is very comfortable for all playing styles. Instead buying a new guitar I changed the pickups to Seymour Duncan Sh-2 Jazz for the neck and Sh-4 JB for the bridge. Overall, it's a great guitar just change the pickups.

      Awesome bang for the bucks.

      By

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

I just recent purchased this SG Special. I did minor adjustments before playing it and when I plugged it into my Marshall amp, I was floored. The sound is incredible not to mention the sustain. The action on the fretboard is right up there with the best. For beginner or professional, this is a must have for any rock musician. It is light and easy to play. With someone like me who has 8 bad discs in his back, a Les Paul and other heavier guitars wear my back out on stage, but I could strap this one on and play all night without any pain or problms. Definitely worth the money for sure. I can't say enough on how much I enjoy playing this guitar. The sound is rich and thick and powerful! If it has bad points, I haven't found them. Besides, it is easy to handle and easy to work on. Even if you have to lay down a few extra bucks for improvement, it is well woth it. This guitar rocks!

      Great guitar for the money

      By

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar about 2 years ago. Still plays great. I took it in to my favorite guitar guy and he did a setup for me and now it plays as well as any guitar I've ever had. I think you should always have a new guitar setup by a pro. I had to have the nut grooves filed because when I would tune it I would get very close and then I would hear a ping and it would immediately be way sharp. This happened mostly on the 2 high strings, they were sticking in the nut. Somebody please tell me what this kill switch is for? Doesn't seem to affect anything but I would much rather they put split coiling than a kill switch. Pros: Nice straight neck, very playable. Decent pickups, forever sustain, good intonation. Stays in tune forever. Cons: Nut was too tight and strings were sticking making it hard to get in tune. Dumb kill switch on the tone knob.

      6 Years and Counting

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

In an overall view, this guitar is still functioning and has not once failed to produce the sound I expect out of it... Except when I try switching between pickups. After about 3 years, the pickup switch has started to falter. It can still switch, it's just that often you have to wiggle the switch around a little, or else something doesn't connect properly, and the sound that comes out is diminished at best. Not quite sure what it is. For someone who is serious about learning to play and likes hard rock and metal, this is a great guitar for you... or if you're on a serious budget and need to replace some gear fast.

      Great Beginner Guitar!

      By

      from Marietta, GA

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

I bought one of these about 6 months ago to replace a first act electric when I decided to get serious about learning to play and it was a great decision. This guitar just feels right in your hands and the neck is very thin and comfortable for me to play since I have smaller hands. The Tune-o-matic bridge makes string changes and intonation/action adjustments a breeze and it has great sustain. The only issue I had was that the G string would hang up in the nut when trying to tune but that was easily remedied with some WD40. I got the ebony one because the cherry was out of stock but the finish is outstanding on it.

      Decent sound, possibly bad wiring

      By

      from Lawrenceville, Ga

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

The sound and the feel of it is very nice. It's not top heavy like some SGs, so I would say it's even more comfortable than a real SG. However, there is something faulty in the pickup switch. If I switch it too fast, it seems as though something doesn't connect properly, and you end up with a sound similar to that of an EMG with a dead battery. Might be an easy fix, or it could just be bad electronic parts. Not quite sure yet. So yeah. It's a good beginner's guitar and a good budget guitar up to a certain point.
