Overview

For almost 20 years, the Epiphone PR-5E acoustic-electric guitar has taken the stage with countless musicians. Designed by Epiphone in 1990, its distinctive body shape was patterned after Epiphone's classic 335 guitars such as the Sheraton and Casino. But instead of a double-cutaway, it features a unique, single "Florentine" or sharp cutaway. The result is a large lower bout providing excellent lows and solid mid-range with easy access to the upper frets on the neck. The premium select spruce top uses a hand-scalloped, proprietary X-bracing pattern. Combined with the slightly arched mahogany back and mahogany sides, the PR-5E provides a sweet tone that projects well even when unplugged. Its Mahogany neck with SlimTaper profile, makes the PR-5E very easy and comfortable to play without fatigue. Legendary Grover machine heads for tuning accuracy and stability with premium gold hardware and split-diamond, pearloid fingerboard inlays make the PR-5E an extraordinary value.

Recently updated with Epiphone's eSonic preamp and NanoFlex pickup system, the PR-5E comes alive when plugged in. Made in cooperation with Shadow Germany, the eSonic preamp features a built-in, easy to use tuner. When engaged, the guitar's output is automatically muted ” with no "popping" noise ” making it a perfect choice for stage use. Other controls on this state-of-the-art preamp include master volume, bass, treble, EQ shape, low battery indicator and a phase switch to help eliminate unwanted feedback. The preamp uses two 2032 lithium watch batteries that are not only lightweight, but provide significantly longer life than heavy 9V batteries. Under the PR-5E's compensated saddle is Shadow's proprietary NanoFlex low-impedance pickup. Not a piezo, this unique flexible sensing material features integrated active electronics and picks up not only string vibration but also top and body vibrations as well for a truly acoustic tone without the harshness of piezos.

This guitar is a good example of bigger bang for less of your buck. Unplugged, it has a fairly thin sound, but is loud enough to play to a youth group meeting or small coffee house gig. Plugged in though, the shadow preamp system is a monster. I get a great plugged in sound on this guitar straight through the PA, or on my Behringer acoustic amp. On all the pr5 models I have played, the fret work has been lackluster above the 15th fret, so if you plan on doing high register soloing on this acoustic, bring a slide. In all, if you're on a budget and need a decent acoustic-electric, this is your guitar.

Got it played it, electronics broke, fixed it, electronics broke again. powered by watch batteries which last like 4 days. Sounds good when working right, but that hasn't seem to be very often. Go with a yamaha APX series guitar. Had one for 7 years never took it in once. Not even for a neck adjustment. Going to get one today and sell the epiphone.

Comments about Epiphone PR5-E Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Guitar came well packed and very clean with no smudges, scratches or defects. Out of the box it played very well in the 1st position. When moving up to the 2nd position chords began to sound out-of-tune. On mine the factory-set action was too high (very common on many acoustic guitars) and the intonation was off. This was easily corrected with a set of nut files. Quickly filed some saddle slots that lowered the action. This completely cured the intonation problem with zero fret-buzz. Now the guitar is just what I had hoped. Since I don't use an acoustic for anything other than personal enjoyment or the occasional open-mic situation I sold my $1700.00 Martin to draw some cash out of it and purchased this Epiphone as a replacement. This guitar is perfect for my needs, looks great and sounds great. Does it bellow loudly like the rosewood-sided Martin 00 I had? No, but it sounds quite good for a thin-body acoustic....especially at this price-point and seems well-built.

Comments about Epiphone PR5-E Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I'm an intermediate student player. This is the fourth Guitar I've played regularly. I really love this thing. The other two acoustics, a cheap Kona and well worn Yamaha were just to hard on my hand playing Barre chords. Within minutes I was in pain. I tested every guitar at GC within a reasonable price range to find a steel string that I liked the setup on. Though my son's Fender electric is easy on the hands, I wanted an electric/acoustic I could play around the campfire too. I almost resigned myself to a nylon string and as I was walking away I saw the PR5E. 30 seconds with it and I was sold. Not a single regret after months of playing.

great guitar with a little tweaking!!!

      By thomas

Comments about Epiphone PR5-E Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I ordered this guitar with the hard shell case. Played nice but noticed a slight neck adjustment was needed. After making that, I changed the strings out for a brighter sound. This guitar is loud and rings like a bell. I have tried other brands and even some of the more expensive guitars but didn't match up to this one. Sound wise, I think this guitar will hold its own. Feels great, sounds great, plays great. Just clean, restring, tweak and go!!!!

      Great Guitar

      By Alex Van Scoter

Comments about Epiphone PR5-E Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

All around a great deal for a great guitar. The sound quality is great and the price is just right. The only thing I did differently was change the strings out with Martins. It sounds amazing on an amp but it could be louder with out it. All in all I couldn't be happier. FYI it sounds much better when you have it playing through an amp than just acoustic.

      Very Happy With This Guitar!

      By DAVE PFAU

      from Grass Valley, California

Comments about Epiphone PR5-E Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I was looking for acoustic/electric with a nice tuner, electronics, a Florentine cutaway & all gloss finish. I wasn't so sure about Epiphone but the PR-5e was just what I was looking for so I gave it a try. I love this guitar and for the price, it's a winner. I have several Taylors & upper end guitars but the quality of this guitar is impressive. The tuner is simple, accurate & easy to use & see on stage & off. And Epiphone's eSonic preamp and Nanoflex pickup system sounds great amplified. The electonics are user friendly & easy to figure out right out of the box. I wish my Taylors had these electronics & tuner! The workmanship is excellant. I love the Rosewood back & sides with an all gloss finish. You see allot of guitars with a gloss top & satin sides & back. I know that a satin finish helps with more vibration but that combination just doesn't work for me. The materials & finish on this guitar is perfect. I must confess that GC had to go though several PS-5e's to get one that I was happy with. One had a very obvious finish flaw on the back even though the inspection card had the back marked off as inspected. So someone at the factory screwed-up. But, this guitar is beautiful. It's been a month & I still lovelooking at it & better still, playing it. I did change the strings as soon as I got it home. They are probably fine for those who like a medium gauge, but light gauge strings made it play more like an electric guitar vs more like an acoustic with the factory set. This is my first Epiphone & it will probably not be the last. If you are looking for a nice A/E with more of an electric guitar feel, the PS-5e is the best of both worlds. Well worth the money. I am still very pleased with my purchase...

      Nice!

      By Gabriel Mendez

Comments about Epiphone PR5-E Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

The guitar is very well made and looks just as good. I had to adjust the truss rod a little for it to play at its best but once I did that it sounded pretty good acoustically. But once plugged in it was a whole different story. The sound was full and beautiful. Just overall nice guitar for any playing level.

Wonderful little guitar with its own personality.

      By JOHN SNIDER

      from Yorba Linda - CA

Comments about Epiphone PR5-E Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Just bought one of these for my older son. I strummed most of the acoustics in the store in this price range, and it came down to this one or a Yamaha that sounded very nice. The clincher was that the Epiphone had much better low end. It was a richer tone than the Yamaha, though in the store I thought Yamaha might have been a little sweeter. After I got the Epiphone home and could hear it in a quiet environment, I changed my mind about the sweetness. This guitar was surprising loud acoustically, which is always the first thing I look for even in a solid body electric guitar. I had expected the thinner body to be too quiet. The harmonics ring for quite a long time after being strummed hard. I have three Taylors, 414, 414ce, and a 454e. I wouldn't hesistate to gig with the Epiphone after I get it set up. The string tension is a bit on the stiff side, and I like the action a tad lower. It doesn't play bad, its just a little stiff on the strings. Though I might not lower the action it as my son is a hard strummer. When I was younger I might have bought the Yamaha, as it was easier to play. But now I know that you can get a guitar set up by a good luthier to different playing styles. The only thing that really matters is how the thing sounds. It is a great sounding guitar. Got to say thanks to Fred for taking care of me. I almost didn't buy this guitar as it had no battery in it. Fred took it to the guitar tech, got one installed and brought it back while I was testing various other acoustics.

      Unbelievable Plugged In!!!

      By Josh Kresge

      from Binghamton, NY

Comments about Epiphone PR5-E Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

At first I was a little worried when I bought this guitar. It sounds OK unplugged. I tried out in the store and never plugged it in. You just don't get the deep tones due to the thin body. Then I took it home and plugged it in...WOW! Worth every penny. This guitar sounds amazing plugged in! My buddy who plays very high end Taylor 914ce was seriously impressed. If you are looking for just a straight up acoustic this is not the guitar. If you want to play plugged in look no further. The thin body is much more comfortable on stage too. I couldn't be happier with the purchase!

Comments about Epiphone PR5-E Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have been playing the guitar for over five years now and this is by far my most favored of the acoustics I have. I couldn't asked for a better low price guitar from any other makers. The feel of the guitar is absolutely amazing I could play this guitar all day with no trouble and it looks even better in person. Like I said before by far my most favorite of my guitars.

      I love my PR5-e

      By Robin the Hammer

Comments about Epiphone PR5-E Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have been a Gibson man all my life. For the last ten years I've used a J-185 with a Fishman. Acoustically, the PR5E can't compare, though it's a nice guitar. But plugged in, it kills! The sound is superior to acoust-electrics costing ten times as much. And the fretwork way up the neck is spot on, at least on mine. Terrific guitar for a few bucks, and it is GORGEOUS!
