Comments about Epiphone Mandobird-VIII:

I saw this thing and had to have it despite other reviews I read. Well the other reviews were right. The Mandobird 8 was not playable at all on the first fret. I had to push down so harsd on the strings at second and third frets it put the intonation out. Perhaps with some work it would have been a nice piece. I did not expect much for the money but I do expect it to be tunable and playable.

Very good for the money

Comments about Epiphone Mandobird-VIII:

I was very surprised when I received my Mandobird. For the price I paid, I didn't expect such a nice instrument. The Mandobird is made in Indonesia, which I consider to be a step above China, so that could be a part of it. The Finish on this thing is gorgeous. Not a blemish to be had. It's definitely as attractive as I'd expect a Firebird(based) instrument to look. The action was a little high, but that was an easy fix, just lower it. The intonation was off, I had to adjust that myself. The problem with that is the 8 string model used a terrible bridge that doesn't have independant saddles, so as you adjust the intonation in or out on the top or bottome strings, the middle strings go out. But, with a little tweaking and some patience, I got it very close to where it should be, good enough to play it. Also, the bridge has kind of an uncomfortable rough edge on it where you may rest your hand, or just bump sometimes. I got used to that after a few hours, it's just irritating. If I was to change anything out, it'd be the bridge. I found replacements online with independant saddles for $40, but I don't plan to change it out anytime soon. The pickups appears to be a P-bass pickup, and I've read that's what people put in there when they swap it out. It sounds good though, so I'll leave it the way it is. The knobs for tone and volume work and feel fine, as does the output jack. The tuners are Grovers, which are some of the best you'll get. The nut was cut correctly, but appears to be plastic. I'm not concerned about it, it works well. I haven't found any problems in the fret work either. There's no buzzing or anything to warrant a fret leveling. This mandolin feels solid and reliable, though I don't think anyone will want to record with it with the bridge it has and the intonation not being spot on. In the end, it was a great deal, especially with free shipping and the 10% off coupon I used. My one complaint is that they used a bridge that was clearly only geared towards being cost effective, and it will not allow for correct intonation, but is certainly playable with some tweaking. I can't really complain too much, the price is still a helluva deal, and this thing is solid and gorgeous. And it comes with a gig bag.

Excellent Mandolin

By John

Comments about Epiphone Mandobird-VIII:

This is an Excellent Mandolin for the price. No, it's not a traditional mando for bluegrass or Celtic, but then it's not really meant to be. Has great sound and mine was properly set-up with fresh strings when purchased! Since everyone plays guitar, I wanted a different sound to add in some richness rather than another layer of guitar. Fit and finish is excellent...only thing I might change is the nut. This one is plastic and can probably be much improved with a Tusq or Bone nut.

Love my Mandobird

By Robert shoemaker

from Middlebranch, Ohio

Comments about Epiphone Mandobird-VIII:

I really enjoy my recent purchase of a Epiphome Mandobird VII. The tome is crisp and is much easier to play than my cheeper acousic mandolin. Adatorium sound is just as crisp as through my amp. I love my mandobird. The best part about purchasing my mandobird is the service received by folks at the Guitar Center. Very helpful for someone new to this type of instrument and additional assesories needed. I was so impressed that I purchased another guitar.

Mandobird rocks

By Dave Durite

Comments about Epiphone Mandobird-VIII:

It is a beautiful well crafted instrument. The picture does not do it justice. You can't go wrong if you want to play your mandolin loud enough to be heard.

Have had it for 2 weeks now great mando love it came with grover tuners, was set up great only thing wrong was a small dent on back side. Love it. Plays and sounds great glad I got the 8 string instead of the 4 string.
