Overview

The Epiphone MB-200 is a terrific 5-string banjo for beginners that includes all the key features of a professional 5-string banjo but much lighter in weight. The MB-200 reflects Epiphone's 80-year history as a leader in banjo design. At the height of the banjo era in the 1920's, Epiphone had 11 different banjos in production and many of founder Epi Stathopoulo's patents are still in use today and can still be found in our professional banjo line. This affordadble entry-level instrument continues that tradition. It has a mahogany body and neck with a rosewood fingerboard featuring stylish inlays, and a Remo head. All in all, it's a great instrument to get your start on.

I was pleasantly surprised at how good this banjo looked and sounded. From researching it, I knew I would already like it, but when I saw it in person it was even better. This is my first banjo (other than a very cheap one I had before), but I've been play bass and Guitar for 7 years so I know if an instrument is well made. Obviously this is not the best banjo. There are very small things that are not perfect, but are virtually unnoticeable. For the price of this banjo, you get a lot more than you pay for!

The rating I am giving this banjo is mostly due to the state the banjo comes in and not the banjo itself. The MB-200 plays well and is a solid choice as a beginner banjo, which was why I bought it. But! It comes having not been set up at all. The intonations were over a full step off on the 12th fret. Seeing as I am a beginner and do not know the mechanics of a banjo, I tried to watch some videos and do some research on how to get it sounding just right, but eventually had to buckle and take it into a shop. It finally sounds like it should, is playing well and a decent purchase, but be forewarned, especially beginners, it needs to be set up when you get it. Almost unplayable really, until the truss rod, head tension and bridge have all been adjusted properly.

      Awesome beginner banjo

      By Cam Johnson

      Comments about Epiphone MB-200 Banjo:

I bought one of these on clearance for $200 and it is the best $200 ever spent. The tone is very good for the price and the action feels excellent. The only problem is that the tuning pegs are less than good. Really they're all fine except for the one on the low G string. That one is way too sensitive and goes out of tune easily if touched slightly. But they hold the pitch well once it's in tune. Also, I recommend tightening the head immediately after buying it: makes it sound much better.

      Pleasant Surprise

      By Declan Weir

      Comments about Epiphone MB-200 Banjo:

I got this banjo for Christmas this year, after doing online research and comparing one banjo to another, I decided on this one. I had seen it online and already knew what it looked like but when I opened it up I was amazed. The banjo itself is on the heavy side, the neck is small and the tuners face out back, so I would not recommend a wall stand or hanging the guitar by its neck alone. This is my first banjo, but I have been playing guitar, bass and various other instruments for 10 years or so now. Overall it is a pretty awesome, beautiful and great sounding banjo. I would recommend you get it set-up in the shop, as doing it on your own would be a challenge.

      Comments about Epiphone MB-200 Banjo:

this banjo is really great for beginners. very good sound, and it seriously looks amazing. if you were thinking you could play this without the resonator, you won't be able to bc the rim is not smooth with it off. great banjo though....awesome!

      Great Banjo

      By trevor

      Comments about Epiphone MB-200 Banjo:

this was my first banjo and it is very easy to play since it has a great neck on it. i didnt tighten the head on it till about 8 months after i started playing and it made a world of difference in tone. TIGHTEN THE HEAD!!!! all of the banjos in the guitar room at guitar center have very loose heads and thats why they all sound terrible.

      Comments about Epiphone MB-200 Banjo:

It's a nice starting banjo, and it is very easy to play. But there was a major flaw on mine. The tuners were the of less quality than a first act $20 guitar. There are certain spots where they are okay, but right in the areas where they needed to be they would slip and go down half a step, then you have to re-adjust again, only to find it does it again. Overall it is a very good instrument but I can't overlook the tuners being as bad as they are, if you're going to buy this banjo be sure to buy replacement tuners.

      Great for the money

      By paul

      Comments about Epiphone MB-200 Banjo:

This is a great banjo, well worth your money. As this was my first banjo I didn't really know what to expect, but it blew me away. Great tone and easy playability made it a snap to pick up and jam, and my background as a guitarist also helped. This is a beautiful instrument, the pictures do not do it justice. Everyone I show it to comments on how great it looks. The only downside is its kind of a pain to tune, and isn't rock solid in holding a tune. This isn't really a problem though as I am used to tuning often and am kind of OCD about it. Overall an excellent starter banjo you will not be disappointed with, and for the price pick up a hardshell case while you're at it.

      Nice banjo!

      By Star

      Comments about Epiphone MB-200 Banjo:

Nice little banjo for the price. It isn't as punchy as some others I've played but does the trick. This one sounds a bit warm and mellow with less ring, so if your a bluegrass, Earl Scruggs type player you may want to shop around a little if your looking for that hard driving banjo sound.
