Overview

The Epiphone Ltd. Ed. Nighthawk Custom Quilt celebrates one of Epiphone's most original and treasured designs with a beautiful custom AAA quilt maple veneer top. When the Nighthawk was first introduced in 1993, it was a truly modern guitar--a complete departure from "tradition" with its 25.5 in. scale length and its versatile combination of coil-tappable humbucker and single-coil pickups.

Breakthrough designs don't always catch on right away. Such was the case with many now-iconic guitars, including the Flying-V, the Explorer and even the Les Paul. But original Nighthawk fans knew it was a supremely versatile axe that made it possible for one player to sound like a dozen different guitars at the flip of a switch. And today, a new generation is discovering the Ltd. Ed. Nighthawk Custom Quilt and its powerful pickup combination and beautiful finish.

Classic Tone Woods and a Custom Quilt Top
The Epiphone Ltd. Ed. Nighthawk Custom Quilt is essentially a combination of an SG (with a lower bout and thinner body) and a Les Paul (upper bout). And just like those classics, the new Ltd. Ed. Nighthawk Custom Quilt features a solid mahogany body (with added "belly" scarf for comfort) and an exquisite AAA quilt maple veneer top. The hand-glued mahogany neck has a SlimTaper D-shape profile and the original Nighthawk's famous 25-1/2 in.scale for a well-rounded, warm tone with excellent sustain. The headstock is back-angled at 14 degrees, which increases pressure on the strings and helps them stay firmly in nut slots for stable intonation and tuning. To add brilliance as well as a smooth, durable playing surface, the Epiphone Ltd. Ed. Nighthawk Custom Quilt is fitted with a rosewood fingerboard, a favorite of serious guitar players for its resistance to wear.

A Dozen Guitars in One
The Epiphone Ltd. Ed. Nighthawk Custom Quilt allows players the ability to cover all the classic sounds of rock, pop, jazz, and country in one guitar. The Nighthawk features a unique pickup combo that includes a full-size NHTTM humbucker (bridge), a NSXTM single-coil (middle) and a NHRTM mini-humbucker (neck). When combined with the 5-way slider and push/pull coil-tapping tone knob, the Nighthawk Custom Quilt offers you nine different "tones" at your fingertips--from a powerful and warm humbucker to the unique clarity of a mini-humbucker to a thin, bright single-coil--and everything in-between. The Alnico II pickups are double-wax-potted to avoid microphonics at high volume and can be dialed-in with a single volume control. The master tone control features a push-pull switch to split the coils of the bridge pickup, allowing for quick and unique tone changes. And don't forget, the Nighthawk's nickel bridge with its "string-thru" body design ensures maximize resonance and sustain. The bridge also features individual saddles for independent height and intonation adjustment.

Killer Looks, Premium Features
One of the first things you notice about the Ltd. Ed. Nighthawk Custom Quilt is the gorgeous, AAA quilt maple veneer top and the pearloid "crown" inlays on the fingerboard. The Epiphone Ltd. Ed. Nighthawk Custom Quilt is available in your choice of Translucent Black, Translucent Purple, Translucent Blue, and Translucent Red. And, the Nighthawk comes with premium 18:1 ratio Grover machine heads for excellent tuning accuracy and stability while Epiphone's heavy-duty output jack and long-lasting 1 in. potentiometers make for worry-free operation.

Great versatile guitar. Only disappointment was that Guitar Center doesn't include a free basic setup. The new guitar experience is dampened when the instrument basically isn't playable until you shell out more money for a setup.

It is easily knocked out of tune when bending notes and has some fret buzz. Nothing unusual that won't be fixed with a setup. In my opinion, if you're shelling out for a new guitar, a basic setup should be included.

I went through three of these guitars before finally giving up. The first one came in damaged - the neck was cracked on both sides just under the head stock. The next one was manufactured incorrectly because during setup (which I had to pay for), it was discovered that the innotation was sharp from the 8th fret and up due to a manufacturing flaw in the bridge. The third guitar had the same issue. Guitar Center did refund my money, but during the whole process they were not very helpful and understanding. For the third guitar, I had to almost demand a free setup. I actually lost money on the whole deal. I wound up buying a PRS from another music store.

Second Chance, and I'm glad I did

      By John

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Nighthawk Custom Quilt Electric Guitar:

Back in 2012, when the Nighthawk 1st came out, I purchased one. Honey Burst color. It had a great action, very fast, the tonal variety was fantastic. But I traded it in on a new rig in 2014. When I saw the new 2014 Nighthawk out, with the new colors, I knew I had to get one again. I'm glad I did. Trans Blue. My Second Chance OK, features: How about 9 different tonalities with the coil tapping. 25 1/2 inch scale for ease of playing. Fast neck, not to thick, and not to small. I have owned a squirer, and a fender strat, and personaly, I like this better. (The Ford - Chevy arguement) I have owned several Epiphones, and for the money, they are durable, have great features, and are very playable. This Nighthawk is no exception to those qualities. I play through a Peavey Transtube amp, with a BOSS ME70 pedal, and boy, this guitar will deliver the sounds, clean all the way to really heavy distortion. It isn't too heavy, and with the sculptured body, a joy to play. The Trans Blue is awesome, however, a Trans Red is out there on the Epiphone site, just not at Guitar Center. BTW: The staff at the Twin Cities Guitar Center are the greatest. (had to reach out to you guys)

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Nighthawk Custom Quilt Electric Guitar:

I have been wanting a Les Paul for years and was looking at buying one when I came across this Nighthawk. Its unique style plus three pickups, and especially its awesome beauty, sold me. Am I ever glad I bought it! It is the perfect electric for me. Have a little problem with buzzing with a capo on frets above 5, but I'll be taking it in to my local Guitar Center and have it properly set up for me. I don't know why Epiphone discontinued it but am I ever happy that they made this Limited Edition! I still may get a Les Paul in a few years, but I don't think it will be as versatile as my Nighthawk! Again, I love this guitar and highly recommend it!

      Great but...

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Nighthawk Custom Quilt Electric Guitar:

Picked up a used one in trans black. Not my number one color choice but the price was great. While the transaction didn't flow easily (had it shipped from one store to another) the guitar itself will probably be my number one from now on. I don't know if the previous owner had made any changes but the setup was lousy. Action way too high and intonation terrible. I put new strings on it, spent the afternoon doing a setup, and now I'm in love. I've been playing a Dot and a Genesis and the Nighthawk seems to be able to cover almost anything either of those two could do plus a lot more. It's amazing the range of tones available, and all so simple with just a 5-way switch, one tone knob and one volume. And compared to the Genesis this thing feels like a feather. Other than the setup the guitar is nearly perfect other than a couple of very minor nicks on the back from the previous owner. If you're thinking about getting one, don't hesitate. Do it!

Order this online and had it shipped a local GC store. Thank goodness. By far one of the thickest necks you will ever see on a guitar in this price range. Very uncomfortable to play. The humbucker and mini humbucker pickups are terrible. I got a decent single coil tone out of it but that was the only good part about this guitar. The volume knob was installed crooked as well. Overall a big disappointment. I wouldn't recommend this guitar to anyone who has any real playing experience. It's more like entry level junk. The only good thing I can say is it was a beautiful looking guitar. Took it back to local GC store after 3 days trying to like it. You can't beat GC return policy.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Nighthawk Custom Quilt Electric Guitar:

I have owned many versions of this guitar. I owned the original that came out in the '90s, the trans amber reissue, the fireburst reissue, and now the trans blue. The trans amber was the only one that didn't feel like a toy. I don't like super light guitars. The difference is the trans amber is made in Indonesia. The trans blue and the fireburst are made in China. I will be sending the trans blue back and buying another trans amber. The nighthawk is, hands down, my favorite guitar, but I don't want something that feels like a toy. This guitar feels like it's made out of plastic.

I'm a 40 year veteran of the band scene ..I gig several times a week. this is truely the most versatile guitar there is from LP to tele to strat...it does that. Craftmanship, fit and finish are all perfect.
I don't know where the comments about a fat neck are from..? this neck is the slimest ez playing as you can get. The body has the belly cut contour..and is small and lightweight. This guitar and a decent amp ...you are good to go. I got mine for $299 a couple years ago..immaculate right out of the box. I changed out the control knobs for chrome steel with a set screw as i use the coil tap frequently and sometimes pulled the knob off..and I think they're pretty!

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Nighthawk Custom Quilt Electric Guitar:

The new Nighthawk is a great value if you can find one in stock. It seems that Gibson has decided again to stop making this amazing guitar. On the good side the guitar comes with a very unique pickup arrangement. With coil tapping you can get A LOT of different tones with this guitar. Lovers of casters will like the tones that this ax gives out. My problems come with the bridge pickup. It's too thin for my liking. I want more tone and more meat to my bridge and this pickup isn't hot enough. I'm going to toss in a different pup and then I'm sure it will be fine. All in all for the current price it's an amazing value.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Nighthawk Custom Quilt Electric Guitar:

I bought the trans amber several years ago due to the good looks and apparent versatility of the model. Unfortunately, it just has never been that comfortable to play compared to my Les Paul. I think what bothers me is the close proximity of all the pickups. I prefer not picking directly over a pickup, and that is all but impossible with this guitar. I have also found that the pickups are not of the best quality, and while this is easily remedied by upgrading to better pickups, the guitar is not comfortable enough to warrant spending that extra cash. I will say that the Nighthawk is a beautiful looking guitar, and the body is fairly lightweight and comfortable to hold while standing. As for the versatility, I have come to the conclusion that this is a guitar that can't decide what it wants to be, so it does a little of everything, but none of it that well. For mini-humbuckers, I have a Gibson SG that sounds fantastic, so I don't really need that feature. For single coil, I grab my Stratocaster that I've had for many years. (i'm not really that big a fan of single coils on a regular basis, but it's nice to have a dedicated single coil guitar when needed.) This leaves the humbuckers, which are handled by my Les Paul. None of the available sounds on the Nighthawk can compare to these other instruments. Of course, I'm very fortunate to have these other guitars available to me, and if i didn't, perhaps I'd feel differently about the Nighthawk. If the idea of coil tapping a major draw, I would recommend looking at one of the Epiphone Les Paul models that have that feature. Two humbuckers will always be more useful in the long run than the combination of humbucker - single coil - mini humbucker that is found on this model. And the Les Pauls feel and play much better too.
