Overview

The limited edition Epiphone Les Paul Special SC Electric Guitar reproduces the simple pleasures of a 55-year-old classic. At the same time the guitar updates the format with a second pickup”in the neck position, a la the Les Paul Special”and improved hardware in the form of a Tune-O-Matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece combination.

Introduced in 1954 as an entry-level version of the Les Paul, the Les Paul Junior graduated from kids bedrooms, to garage bands, to club and arena stages through the course of 3 decades as it became a favorite not only with beginners, but with professional guitarists, too. The bare-bones, slab-bodied, single-cutaway electric guitar earned the respect of rock and rollers in particular, and became a punk favorite in the late '70s and early '80s, but also turned up in the hands of a surprisingly diverse range of guitar stars.

As simple as the Les Paul Junior is in design and construction, its basic cornerstone ingredients add up to create a robust and toneful guitar. The marriage of hot, raw single-coil P-90 pickups, a resonant mahogany body, and sturdy glued-in neck make the Epiphone Les Paul Special SC a guitar with surprising reserves of depth and power at an extremely appealing price.

Fell in love with this TV Yellow LP Special the second I saw it; nice smooth finish, little wood grain poking thru, just different enough from the standard everybody-has-one Les Paul to stand out. And the color is just plain sick. It plays super-comfortably. Sits on your lap nice, doesn't kill your shoulder when you play it standing either. Action was good in the store, intonation was good, all the basic stuff was good to go, no visit to the local guitar repairman necessary. Neck feels comfortable to the hand, nice flat fingerboard too. The P-90's sound fantastic - I utterly despise Epiphone humbuckers - sold the G-400 I had because they were just so completely dull and lifeless - but these pickups really sing, especially when you crank up the gain. The neck pickup is especially musical; dime the gain settings, back your tone control to about 7 and let 'er rip :-) I like the simplicity of the setup - 2 pickups, responsive switch, comfy-on-the-picking-hand bridge (the bridge on my Strat all of a sudden feels real scratchy now), all in all a nice sandwich. Very satisfied with my purchase, thanks everyone.

Decent guitar, mediocre action but a dyed fret board that turns your fingers black. good tuners better pickups is an option. I would recommend a standard les paul to this one.

Great tone!!!!

By Andrew

from North Canton, Ohio

I only played this guitar once and I was blown away by the diverse tone. The neck P-90 has a great deep warm tone which was great for jazz. And the bridge P-90 had a very clean tone. If you added some overdrive or distortion, its the perfect punk guitar. If I had the money, I would have bought it right then. I'd recommend this guitar for either jazz or punk mainly but can be used for other clean toned styles

Excellent Feel, Excellent Sound

By Oliver Bolger

from Merritt Island, Florida

This guitar feels great to bend and play on, along with sounding great also. I've owned one for about a year now and have not found any problems other than it tends to go out of tune easy. It a great guitar and worth the money.

What A Great Guitar!!

By Blues_Deluxe

from Boston, MA

I love this guitar! It really plays and sounds like Les Paul Junior Special for less than $400.00. I can't find a thing to criticize. The neck extremely well finished and has the chunky feel of 50s Gibson. The TV Yellow finish looks great and without any blems, overspray etc. The hardware seems first rate, although esperience has taught me that time may take it's toll on the pots, switches and tuners. The guitar plays beatifully and is full of that nasty/raunchy/funky sound that only the Les Paul Jr. can give you. I'm not sure the sound is ideal for Metal but blues and blues rock it can't be beat. The neck pickup can go from creamy to really lo-fi fuzz. The middle position justs sings. Slightly overdriven it gives you that Mike Bloomfield / Dicky Betts sound. Push it a little further and you get that sweet, thick sound that vintage P-90s are known for. The bridge pickup is also just perfect everything a little crunchy to outright nasty. There is some hum from these pickups and that can get annoying in some environments. The middle position is hum - cancelling (for the most part) and just be sure to roll back the volume between songs. If you're looking for a classic Gibson solid body sound in a no-frills package you can't go wrong.

OMG

By Strokemeister

from McAllen TX

This guitar is just amazing for the price, I have a Gibson les paul studio and was actually thinking of installing P94 pickups on it because I love the P90s sound until i realized that for just about the same price i could buy this one! Great guitar undoubtably unbeatable at that price, the P90s really rock out if you want that twangy punk sound of the clash of green day or the strokes, great guitar, great price.

Never Played A Better Sounding Guitar For My Music

By Tom

from Peabody, MA

I'm a huge Green Day fan, and when I first set eyes on this guitar, the first thing I thought of was Billie's Signature les paul junior. Punk is the type of music I play and when I rang out my first chord on this, it will be like heaven to your ears. For the money, and great tv yellow color, the p90 pickups, and the overall feel, this guitar is a must buy,

P90 Heaven

By JB

from Temecula, Ca

This guitar is a real steal. I was looking for a Les Paul Junior / Melody Maker and picked this up. It was very light, had a great neck/body joint and looked great - I bought the red mahogany guitar. I plugged it in to the new Vox AC15 and boy oh boy this guitar sang. Great tones, great tuning and great playability. The P90's sing and soar and dropping the tone control did bring in very usable tones, even if these controls were somewhat either all or nothing. This will be my main stage guitar and it just goes to show that you don't need to spend thousands to get a great sounding instrument.

Duh!

By Diego Barreto

from Mcallen

Great birthday gift. Haha I dont think anyone would buy this for someone because most peopleare too cheap and buy like stupud shirts and stuff. If you are one of the people that would buy this as a gift, lets be friends because this is a great guitar, it has a cool finish, cool color, it does sound good, actually if you compare it to other good guitars its pretty cheap. Well this guitar is very worth more than the price adverticed so go ahead and buy it, it's good deal.

Multiple sounds

By Josh Miller

from North Port Florida

When I was looking around at guitar center i noticed this guitar becuase it looked incredible and it standed out. I plugged it in on a line6 spider 4 and i played some hard rock but then i turned it to clean and turned reverb up and it had the blues sound to it and it sounded great. Best guitar for the money.

AMAZING GUITAR!

By Sam

from Boston, Massachusetts

I usually stick to Fender guitars, but every now and then I'll find other guitars that I like. And this is one of them! It's actually the best Les Paul I've ever played, the strings feel good against the neck and the overall guitar is actually very lightweight. I recommend playing this guitar with a Peavey Vypyr 30W combo amp, but it depends on what music you play.

These P90s Just Sing

By Tim B.

from Syracuse NY

I went to GC in Syracuse just so I could try out a plethora of guitars with my Amp Rig (Egnater Tweaker). The finest salesman in all Central New York, PJ, was glad to pull an endless stream of axes off the wall. SGs, Jet Kings, Jaguars, Strats, Gibson Les Pauls; I tried them all...this guitar just had the sound I was looking for. The P90s just sing, especially for my brand of punk/ska/rock. TV Yellow is crazy hideous in all the right ways, a real punk rock statement. No blemishes that I could find at all. The thin body is certainly a plus, I've always thought Les Pauls were just too heavy for a full gig, but not this one. All in all it's not a pretty guitar, but it's pretty enough. Guitars should never be flashier then the guy playing them. My single biggest worry was whether this guitar would hold it's tuning, it does, and I play hard, so I'm very pleased. The only issue I have is the placement of the pickup selector switch, I personally have a tendency to accidentally hit it when I strum, I think I will stop doing this with time, but the bottom mounted switches are a lot more forgiving to sloppy players. I recommend this guitar to anyone looking to play loud, brash, rock n' roll with lots of crackle. This guitar does just that. If you think this guitar is too cheap to be any good you need to seriously reconsider. If you're looking at something a little cheaper but love this sound, just stop. Save up the cash and grab this because, honestly, this is one purchase you won't regret.

Finally!

By Mikeytheripper

from Eugene Oregon

Epiphone finally did it and created the Les Paul SC Specail. I played the gibson orignal of this and loved the P-90 pickups it had because of the bite they have, now Epiphone did it and made it at a great price, I played the Cherr color which is very shiny and beautiful in the light but what really made me smile was that same vintage bite that only p-90's dish out, loud and clear in the bridge, crunchy yet smooth in the rythme and combined is that sweet bluesy spice les pauls are famous for. The neck is very very smooth and fits my small little hand and it weights barely anything compared to my junior, the frets are dress up amazing and the action is low enough to let the sustain last for days! Try it out you won't be sorry oh and the turners work wonders

A very nice offering...

By Jay

from Marietta, GA

I love my new LP. Why? Becuase it has P90s! As always the fit, finish and playablity of Epiphone LPs are spot on, as is the case with this guitar. Definitely a different tone from a Les Paul. The only drawback as I see it is the p90 output. (that's why I only gave 4 stars.) It could be a little hotter...but overall this is a great guitar, especially for what it costs.

Great for beginners and intermediates

By Adam

from Woodbury, NY

The one I bought has a beautiful cherry finish. The build quality is what you would expect for the price, but nonetheless if you are looking for a nice guitar for low money, or a "project guitar", this is a good choice. The neck felt nice in my medium sized hand. The p90s aren't the best quality, and upgrading them will take this guitar to new heights. All in all, solid guitar, whether you are a beginner, or simply short on cash. If you want something that will last some time, search for better quality guitars (that will inevitably cost more).

A Gibson in Disguise...

By AltRock22

from CA

Let me start by saying that this guitar is a dream. This guitar is a winner. The tone of the P90's is simply divine. There is only one caution to you... the fingerboard is dyed with something to make it look more uniform in terms of color. As soon as you buy it, I suggest that you take the strings off and give the fretboard a good cleaning with lemon oil so the dye will not end up on your hands. Don't not buy it becasue of negative reviews of the fretboard, just know how to fix it. Dunlop sells a formula you can buy here at guitar center. Other than the fretboard, this guitar is flawless.

Fantastic Old School Rocker

By DetroitBlues

from Detroit, MI

For the price point, this is a fantastic example of vintage tone. The feel and finish of this guitar sends you back to the 50's. The P-90's are unmistakable vintage Gibson. Only draw back is a little rough on the fret edges on a few frets. Excellent for the price regardless!
