Astounding Value - Just needs a few tweaks

By Donald Porter

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Explorer Pro Electric Guitar:

First off, let me say that I am a huge fan of Explorers and their kin. I've owned an Agile Ghost for a few years, which I love. But just one guitar of this sort was not enough to sate my addiction - when I saw this Epiphone on the GC website, I knew I'd have to test one. First impressions: I could not take my eyes away from this thing. The finish, called "TV Silver," has a certain DIY-aesthetic to it, since you can see the wood grain through in certain places. Many will be displeased by this, but in my opinion, it adds a new layer of personality to the guitar. The frets were well done and the binding around the body and neck looks quite nice. The chrome hardware adds a subtle but very "classy" touch to the guitar. I was not a huge fan of the pickups, however. The coil-split feature was nice, but the pickups were just a bit too weak for my liking. I had GC's tech replace the pickups with a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and an SH-2B Jazz Model in the neck. With the new pickups, this guitar gets incredible tone. The Seymour Duncan pickups are compatible with the coil-split feature as well, which is more useful than you might think. It enables the guitar to be a bridge between Gibson and Fender tonality, which is a huge plus. After a few weeks of playing: The guitar still sounds absolutely amazing, and it still grabs my attention every time I see it hanging on my wall. The Grover machine heads keep it in tune nicely and the bridge is very good for Epiphone hardware. I may choose to replace it, but I can't see that happening anytime in the near future. However, after having some fairly minor issues with the action of the guitar and some fret buzz, I examined the nut to find that the slots were cut just a bit too deep. Eventually I'll remedy this problem, but it's not a big deal at the moment, so that can wait. TL;DR: Pros: Looks great (pictures don't do it justice at all), sturdy, good hardware, great construction for a budget axe Cons: Mediocre pickups, poorly cut nut Overall: 7/10 stock, 9/10 with adjustments

Great guitar!

By BEN ADAMS

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition Explorer Pro Electric Guitar:

I've always wanted an explorer for the longest time, I just never got around to getting one. I saw this one and it caught my attention with what they call "TV Silver" and it didn't seem to me like an average colored explorer. I plugged the guitar in and it just came alive! The fret board is smooth and my hands can fly across it when I need to. I was skeptical about the punch the passive pickups would give me but I was quickly proven wrong. Crisp clean distortion and warm cleans that just made me fall in love with this guitar from the first second. Only thing that was "wrong" was the action was a little uneven on the tune bridge which is a very simple fix and not worth rating down for. It has a little weight to it, but that doesn't bother me, and what do you really expect with such a large body? Overall, great guitar for the price and just a great overall looking guitar. Recommend it to anyone.
