Overview

This modern Ltd. Ed. EJ-160E Acoustic-Electric is one of rock-n-roll’s most revered guitar designs with a solid spruce top and an Epiphone Stacked P-100 pickup.

The original “J-160E” was one of the first acoustic-electric guitars on the market when it was released in 1954. Over the decades, the “J-160E” has been embraced by a wide range of artists, both classic and contemporary, such as Lightnin’ Hopkins, Elvis Costello, Paul Weller and John Lennon. In fact, the “J-160” acoustic-electric was the only guitar to appear on every Beatles album from Please Please Me through Abbey Road. Now with the Ltd. Ed. EJ-160E Acoustic-Electric, the “House of Stathopoulo” brings this vintage and hard-to-find classic into the 21st century with a solid spruce top for a limited time.

Solid Spruce: The King of Tonewoods
Just like the original, this Epiphone Ltd. Ed. EJ-160E follows the contours of the industry standard “Southern Jumbo” acoustic and features a solid spruce top with a select mahogany body. Solid spruce is the “top” of choice for premier acoustic guitars. The more you play your EJ-160E, the more open and expressive the tone—so play your EJ-160E a lot. The body top has 5-ply ivory/black binding while the select mahogany back has single-ply ivory binding. The pickguard is imitation tortoise with the '60s era “E” metal logo. The EJ-160E’s bridge is made from rosewood and has the reverse belly design familiar to “J-160E” collectors and features a compensated bone saddle.

The select mahogany neck has a comfortable “1960s” SlimTaper D-profile and is glued to the body using a dovetail joint. The neck has a 24.75 in. scale with a rosewood fingerboard with vintage-style pearloid “Trapezoid” inlays just like the original models. The fingerboard has single-ply ivory color binding and features a 12 in. fingerboard radius, 20 medium frets and a bone nut along with the Epiphone classic Sloped Dovewing headstock.
Revolutionary Electric Sound
What made the original J-160E so renown was its unique pickup system, and to bring that sound back to life for the 21st century, this Epiphone Ltd. Ed. EJ-160E features an Epiphone Stacked P-100 humbucking pickup at the end of its fingerboard. The Epiphone Stacked P-100 pickup is seated discretely between the end of the guitar's fretboard and the sound hole. Master volume and tone controls feature Top Hat knobs with metal inserts and pointers - just like vintage models - and are located on the guitar's lower bout. And each volume and tone control uses full-size 500K potentiometers.

Epiphone Heavy-Duty Hardware
All hardware, like the Epiphone "Deluxe" machine heads with a pro 18:1 tuning ratio, the Epiphone Heavy Duty 1/4 in. output jack, and pre-installed strap buttons are made from solid nickel and the Ltd. Ed. EJ-160E is set up and tuned at the factory using Epiphone 12-53 nickel strings.

 Case sold separately.

I bought this guitar since I like to collect Beatles memorabilia, and over my 45 years of playing guitar I've picked up a Country Gentelman( Chet Atkins), an SG, Telecaster and now this JE-160E replica. I need a Rick 325 or 360 and maybe an imported Hofner bass to complete my collection. This Epiphone was on sale so I thought it would make a great wall hanger in my Beatles room, I had to pay for it up front and wait under a week for it to come in. I really wanted the John Lennon limited edition though you can't find those any longer so I settled for this. The only difference is the John Lennon signature above the pick-guard and maybe a slight color change in the sunburst top. The guitar came package in a double box and was set up at the factory, it was even almost in tune. There is a slight string buzz on the low E which is most likely a truss rod adjustment, I will hold off on any adjustment until I change out the string to a set of 10 or 11 gauge electric guitar strings which is what Lennon preferred. The wood is beautiful and it rings when played acoustically and rocks when its plugged in. I have an electric/acoustic Martin and this sounds as good when plugged in though not as good as the Martin unplugged. The tuners, pickup and wood selection on this guitar are more than I'd expect for a guitar at this price. I can't put this down, I've learned 5 new Beatles songs since I got it. A great guitar for any level of player, highly recommended. I can't imagine why GC doesn't keep these in stock The Beatles are hot once again. Yea, Yea , Yea!

I'm a beatlemaniac for sure, and I wanted to get my hands on this baby. Physically looks beautiful, but the playability is very questionable, the strings were buzzing at first, even with the high action that comes with it, so I changed the strings and installed the Elixir nanoweb and the buzzing stopped, then I lowered the action with the little key that comes with it, and is better now but still I'm not 100% satisfied about it. Next is to change the nut, bridge and pins because it comes with a plastic ones, hopefully that will improve the playability. When is being played plugged in sounds better, so far the pick up seems to work nice. I haven't played the original Gibson EJ-160 so I can't really compare with it but I have played better guitars for sure.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition EJ-160E Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I always wanted a J-160E. I didn't want to shell out over 2,000 for one either. I didn't care for the John Lennon signature edition. The burst was too 'orange' and it was too trivial. I seen this on an email from Epiphone and I wanted it. The vintage burst was on back order, it took almost 2 months for it to arrive. Guitar Center of Pittsburgh let me unbox it when it arrived and it was stunning. This thing does gain attention. Factory set up was pretty good, I only needed to tweak the neck a bit after restringing it with Pyramid Flatwounds (Just like Lennon), tuned it up and it sang like a bird. The finish is beautiful and is very close to the actual Gibson big brother. It sounds great through an amp. I paired it with a Vox AC30VR and had to boost it a bit with a MXR 10 band EQ. Special thanks to Bo Collins at Pittsburgh Guitar Center for the help!

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition EJ-160E Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought this one off of guitarcenter.com and I generally hate doing so since I can't hear it or see the fit and finish. I have previously purchased three Epiphones and most have been meticulously constructed and the fit and finish have been almost perfect. I am disappointed with the quality control of this EJ-160e especially since this one was the most expensive Epi purchased to date. I own Martin's, Gibson's and Taylors and expect more from a reputable company.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition EJ-160E Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

The guitar is extreemly well made. When it came it had the worst strings on, the action was high and the frets were very rough. I polished the frets, put new strings on and adjusted the truss rod to set the action. Now the guitar plays as good as it looks. It sounds good acousticlly, but is really great plugged in, sounds just like the Beatles.

Very satisfied with the EpiJ160E. Fantastic looks, great feel, good sound. As received the action was a little high for my taste. I lowered the action and replaced the strings with flat wound 11's. Plays great now. This guitar is simply a lot of fun! Very Beatle-esque.

Great sounding and playing guitar. However, I wanted the John Lennon signature on the front. I thought that's how they all came. But this is the Lennon model without any signature. I know it makes no difference in the sound or how fun it is to play, but I was under the impression that that's what I was getting.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition EJ-160E Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar because I wanted to have a less expensive guitar always out on it's stand, to grab and play whenever I get the whim. I have two expensive solid wood dreds that need to stay in their cases a lot, getting humidified etc. Yes, being a replica of Lennon's J160e was huge, but I am so happy I bought this guitar. It was set up to play right out of the box. I might have made a slight trussrod adjustment. I first put my own set of electric strings on, on the assumption that the humbug pickup required electric strings. It was fun to play right away and sounded Ok acoustically with the electric strings on....but recently I put my favorite acoustic PB strings on. Wow. It sounds so warm now. I think I'm getting to prefer singing with it. My expensive dreds are too loud. To my surprise, the PB strings work just as well electrically. I use it electrically to practice listening through earphones through a Tascam digital unit. I played it once at an open mike plugged in with the electric strings on. It worked out Ok. The guy running the open mike did have to adjust things some...not sure if the humbug pickup ideally needs a pre-amp. I'm not real good as far as evaluating from an electronic perspective. I want to try it at an open mike with the PB strings on. Will update, if possible, as far as my impressions when plugged in, but either way, I love this guitar. A smile on my face every time I pick it up. The E on the pick guard fell off, as others have noted. Fine with me. It looks more like Lennon's guitar now.

I Use The Epiphone Lt. Ed. EJ-160E Acoustic/Electric Guitar For Many Songs, But I Mostly Play The Beatles On This Beauty. Great Things About The Acoustic/Electric Guitar Are...

                  1. The Design: The Beautiful Fretboard, Along With The Vintage Sunburst Finish.
                  2. The Rich Sound, Whether You're Playing With An Amplifier or Playing Without One.
                  3. Its Almost The Same Replica, As To The Gibson J-160E Acoustic/Electric Guitar;
                  4. Extremely Affordable Price; Compared Prices: Gibson J-160E: $2,399.99, Epiphone Lt. Ed. EJ-160E: $399.99

I Have No Bad Comments About This Acoustic Electric Guitar, From My Experience With It So Far. If You're Looking For An Acoustic/Electric Guitar That Gives You An Awesome Sound, Just Like The Gibson J-160E, This Is Like The Younger Sibling Of The Family!

Fit and finish is up to Gibson standards even though the guitar is made in Indonesia. Mine arrived with a bowed neck but was easily adjusted using the included wrench and following instructions that were included with the guitar. Factory strings sound a little tinny to me but I'm used to playing a 40 year old Ibanez that has really mellowed with age. When plugged into an amp, this thing comes alive far better than the Gibson J160E that I owned 40 years ago. It absolutely sings. Well worth the price I paid and will be a permanent addition to my collection. This is my 4th Epiphone and they just seem to get better and better. Rock out or play around a campfire. This is the right choice.

Nice build, plays well, sounds good plugged in, sorta dead unplugged. P-100 pickup does its job with a good range of tones from the controls. Nice instrument for the price.

I am learning to play guitar and this guitar looked like it was an excellent value. It sounds really good in acoustic mode, but the single coil external pickup causes it to hum when plugged in. It also has considerably less output than a guitar with an under bridge pickup. The more your turn it up to compensate, the louder the hum becomes. If you want to use it for an acoustic guitar I would say OK, but the whole object of this model is to use it plugged in. I can't recommend this guitar to others.

I bought this guitar because my Laravee acoustic-electric tends to feedback. This guitar does not feed back due to the electric pickup. Still has a great acoustic sound.

I got it for a mid-60's-ish acoustic tone in the studio.
I do like the pickup because it lacks the "fizz" of a transducer. Just wish the output was a bit hotter.
The best so far has been to mic it like a normal acoustic, but put the pickup on a second track. Then the palette is massive.
