So, I'm a novice guitar player who had been trying to learn on an acoustic I picked up a couple of years ago and only half practiced on from time to time. About 6 months ago, I got really serious about wanting to play, but have always wanted an electric!

I did a lot of research before going to Guitar Center and thought I wanted the Slash AFD Guitar package. In all fairness, it did not sound bad, but as I began to try more and more guitars my ear started to gravitate to a more expensive guitar. The tone just sounded better, the feel of the instrument just seemed more comfortable, etc.

Well, I had all but settled on an older Epiphone Les Paul Standard that I loved the sound of, unfortunately it felt like it weighed a good 25 pounds or so. I told the salesman I would take it if he had a new one in the back. He did not, but he said he had something better. That's when he showed me this Epiphone Les Paul Plus Top Pro. It was the same beautiful Desert Burst design as the heavier/older Epiphone, but it was far more vibrant and rich in its overall color and luster! Additionally, it was lighter and felt easier to work my fingers up and down the neck.

I instantly fell in love with it!

It was only about $115 more than the older Epiphone I initially wanted and it plays like a dream!

If you are looking for a solid guitar with a beautiful sound, look and feel, look no further, this is the instrument for you.

Trust me!

I find the finish on the guitar flawless, it is absolutely beautiful. The neck is wonderful and action was great right off the rack. My issue is that the pickups sound terrible. They are weak and do not produce that creamy lead tone I was looking for and overall just sound cheap. I am an Ace Frehely fan and will replacing the pickups with dimarzio super distortions. Overall it's a beautiful instrument but I hate the pick ups. I also find that the G-string is difficult to keep in tune. I have read other reviews where people experienced the same issue, but replaced the cheap nut and had no other issues.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro Electric Guitar:

I bought mine at Guitar Center. I got the Vintage Sunburst. Love it so easy to play. I used to have a Gibson Les Paul Standard. I can honestly say I like it a bit better. Love the single coiling option. The finish is excellent. Great value for the price!!!!!!! The Grover tuners keep it in tune very well. If you want to get a Les Paul, this would be the one to get!!!!!!

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar about 3 months ago and I can't imagine having gotten anything better. It's just an amazing guitar in every way possible. I got it in the Heritage Cherry Sunburst finish and I still catch myself staring at it on occasion. I even took the pickguard off so I could see more of the body. My only complaint is the knobs. They just look cheap, nothing major. I play a lot of Pink Floyd and this guitar sounds even more incredible with an overdrive pedal. I use the Buffalo FX Patriot on its own and I transform into David Gilmour. The sustain was more than I expected, and in combination with the Patriot, it is unreal. Gibson is going to have to up its game to create more separation between themselves and Epiphone. Epi has definitely come a long way and this guitar is proof of that. Well, this review is over.... I've got a guitar that is just begging to be played.

The perfect Les Paul for my studio.

By R.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro Electric Guitar:

I needed a second guitar for recording purposes only. Primarily, I'm a bassist but I wanted to learn guitar after nearly 40 years of playing. When I found this, I was quite impressed with the sound and the action. Plus, I wanted one that could give me the sustain I needed on specific tracks.

Get This Guitar!

By Brian Wendholt

from Shorewood, IL

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro Electric Guitar:

What a great guitar! I already have an Epi '56 Goldtop reissue and I really wasn't in the market for another guitar. But I saw this one hanging on the wall at GC and it kept calling to me. The Honeyburst is just gorgeous. Looks like a faded '59 or '60. And the neck is so sweet. Just a little more rounded than my Goldtop, and so comfortable! The coil tap feature is great. In single coil mode I can get a bright snappy sound, fairly close to a Tele, and a completely different sound than the P90s in my Goldtop. In humbucking mode it sustains forever and harmonics just jump out of it. It weighs in at a solid 9.5 lbs, about a pound heavier than my Goldtop. It seems built like a tank, and the only time I've had to tune it was when I unpacked it. I dropped the action a shade over 1/64th on each side just so it matched my '56, but it came set up very well. Intonation is spot on. As somebody who has bought guitars and then traded them away all my life, I really can't see getting rid of either of these LPs. Try one, you'll love it!

An excellent guitar for the price.

By Ray Kelly

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro Electric Guitar:

I had a standard Fender Stratocaster for a while and decided I'd like to trade in for an Epi LP. I found this beauty out on the floor (it was just put out, unlike the rest that have minor defects from being played by customers every day) and immediately had to have it. Perfect playability, great fretwork, minimal if no hum and the pickups sound great. The construction of the guitar is solid and the finish looks beautiful.

You want a good Epiphone LP for a good price look no more.

By Zack Zbleski

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro Electric Guitar:

Oh my goodness this is an excellent guitar. I almost see no difference between this and a Gibson. My dad bought me this guitar three years ago and it still sounds great and feels great. Only thing I changed was the Bridge pickup. It pretty much cut out all of the highs. But still not a problem I was able to live with it but I changed the pickups anyway. Don't waste thousands of dollars on a Gibson there only a few slight differences in my opinion.

I've had my Honeyburst for about 3 weeks now..i wanted to play it for awhile before i gave it a review..i've been playing for many years and have played alot of guitars and this one rates up there as one of the best ..for playability and all around quality..if it didnt say Epiphone it would be very hard for anyone to tell the difference..in my humble opinion is as good as it gets at a fraction of the price for a real LP..I love it!!

I've played for a little over 2 years now, and I bought this guitar a little under a year ago. I've personally experienced no problems with this guitar, and have used it in all gigging I've done, such as my high school's jazz ensemble concerts and local venue concerts. The quality is amazing for the price, and the glossed neck feels amazing while playing. I can confidently say that this is Epiphone's finest, and it works for many genres of music, from jazz, all the way to hard rock. The tone is amazing for the price! While there may be a very occasional fret buzz (very seldom), this is easily overlooked by everything else.

One of, if not the best, guitars under $500

      By Matt

      from Castle Rock, CO

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro Electric Guitar:

I bought this new about a year ago. I chose vintage sunburst (I wish black was an option). Personally, I think this is a great value for a first or second guitar. It plays and feels really good. The sunburst color looks fantastic from certain lighting.I play this through Fender Mustang amps and it works really well with all the settings on that amp. Quick pros and cons. Pro's: great value, sound, coil tapping works great on cleaner amp sounds. To me, there is just a feeling I get playing a classic style guitar. Covers lots of genres (primarily i play symphonic metal, classic metal, and fingerpicking classical, celtic, jazz) but sounds just as good for blues and rock. Cons: Idk if it was just my guitar or the whole line in general, but after a couple months, whenever i would switch from bridge to neck p.u., it wouldn't "switch" right. sound would still come out even if the volume knob was at 0. The input jack gets lose everytime I play (it's an easy fix though). Just personal, but I do not like the creme color of the pickup holder/case thing. Overall, I feel like I spent my money well.

It's my dream guitar. I don't feel the need to pay twice or thrice the price to duplicate the same quality found in "a more famous name" guitar. The quality of construction and the quality of components are not "second place".

If bragging rights is the most important issue, not genuine product quality, then purchase the higher end

      Better than expected

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro Electric Guitar:

Just picked up my new toy. I'm impressed. I wanted a Les Paul, but Gibson's pricing is way too proud. So I based my purchase on reviews. I was going to build one from a kit, but the prices for a decent kit and hardware run real close to a low end Gibson. So I took a chance and ordered the Epiphone online in wine red. The guitar is just plain beautiful, no flaws found. Workmanship is stellar. I'm a woodworker and can't see where the body was glued up from multiple pieces. If it is, they did a heck of a job with the matching. This is not a flat bodied guitar. The top is carved, and the flamed Maple looks great. A nice job on the neck, the fretwork was done right, nice and smooth. I expected to have to change the pickups to get the tone I want. I have 57 classics on the SG and like how they sound. The Probuckers are muddy until the tone is set to 10. The sustain is great and it's a joy to play. It's a keeper!

The same thing, but without the costly name on the headstock

      By MARK NODLAND

      from Cedar Rapids, IA

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro Electric Guitar:

After playing a lot of Gibson Les Pauls and many Les Paul copies over the course of one year, I finally settled on this guitar. The clarity, sustain, and richness of tone in this Epiphone LP are incredible and I've come to the conclusion that the only real difference is the name on the headstock and the price tag. The craftsmanship is excellent and the factory setup was surprisingly good. Most guitars that I purchase require some professional setup after they arrive, but this guitar was spot on. The action is nice and low and the frets are set nicely... no rough edges or unevenness anywhere. The glossy finish has a lot of depth and looks so much better than the flat-looking images that are on this site and on Epiphone's site. The ProBucker 2s and 3s definitely make this guitar stand out from most of the guitars Epiphone makes. I was used to hearing the fairly muddy-sounding "Classic" series pickups that Epiphone likes to stick in their guitars, so this particular model stopped me in my tracks when I tried it out. It really sings! It easily holds its own when I play along with musicians who play guitars that cost twice as much. I will not part with this guitar!

      $500? Really???

      By Jerrell

      from Manhattan, KS

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro Electric Guitar:

This guitar is top quality construction, plays as well as (or better IMHO) than a guitar 6 times the price, and sounds pretty awesome. When I decided to buy this axe, I had at that point played about 4 dozen different Les Pauls, PRS, Strats, and various sundry guitars in search for one that would have magic at a price that was not supernatural. In all seriousness, this Epi Les Paul pretty much kicked the tailpiece off every other guitar (save for an absolutely gorgeous $3000 flametop Paul that gave me illusions of being Joe Bonamassa)! The winner - my fantastic Epi Heritage Cherryburst Standard Plus Top Pro), hands down. A minor niggle - the stock pickups are more than acceptable, but not quite as good as I would like. That is perfectly fine - since the axe is only $500, it is pretty easy to drop in the pickup of your dreams and still afford the rent and a cheeseburger.

      By Mark

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro Electric Guitar:

Here's the deal; I could afford to buy the $2500 Gibson and I would have if I was more experienced, but for the $, this will do just fine. The quality is very good, the electronics are top notch, the fit and finish is great. The instrument has a nice feel to it, nice weight, it feels more expensive than it is. I've had it a few months now and and it has been flawless. I did try the $2500 Gibson and sure, you can feel the difference but for the $ this is the way to go. When I get much better I will get the Gibson but the Epi is fantastic.
