So, I'm a novice guitar player who had been trying to learn on an acoustic I picked up a couple of years ago and only half practiced on from time to time. About 6 months ago, I got really serious about wanting to play, but have always wanted an electric!

I did a lot of research before going to Guitar Center and thought I wanted the Slash AFD Guitar package. In all fairness, it did not sound bad, but as I began to try more and more guitars my ear started to gravitate to a more expensive guitar. The tone just sounded better, the feel of the instrument just seemed more comfortable, etc.

Well, I had all but settled on an older Epiphone Les Paul Standard that I loved the sound of, unfortunately it felt like it weighed a good 25 pounds or so. I told the salesman I would take it if he had a new one in the back. He did not, but he said he had something better. That's when he showed me this Epiphone Les Paul Plus Top Pro. It was the same beautiful Desert Burst design as the heavier/older Epiphone, but it was far more vibrant and rich in its overall color and luster! Additionally, it was lighter and felt easier to work my fingers up and down the neck.

I instantly fell in love with it!

It was only about $115 more than the older Epiphone I initially wanted and it plays like a dream!

If you are looking for a solid guitar with a beautiful sound, look and feel, look no further, this is the instrument for you.

Trust me!

I find the finish on the guitar flawless, it is absolutely beautiful. The neck is wonderful and action was great right off the rack. My issue is that the pickups sound terrible. They are weak and do not produce that creamy lead tone I was looking for and overall just sound cheap. I am an Ace Frehely fan and will replacing the pickups with dimarzio super distortions. Overall it's a beautiful instrument but I hate the pick ups. I also find that the G-string is difficult to keep in tune. I have read other reviews where people experienced the same issue, but replaced the cheap nut and had no other issues.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro Electric Guitar:

I have been playing for over 30 years, and have a collection that includes a Gibson custom shop ES 335, Gibson Les Paul studio deluxe 2, fender USA Tele, as well as various Squiers and Epiphones. I started modding guitars as a way to build my collection of great sounding and playing guitars for less money , and I demand high performance out of all my guitars. I bought one of these used (what a bargain!). It is a well built guitar with great bang for the buck. It was a nice guitar, but not on par with my high end guitars. Understandable, because this ain't a 3000 dollar Gibby les Paul standard. Decent, but I wanted more. So, I bought a set of SD slash pickups, bought new pots and orange drop caps, switchcraft jack and selector switch and a new nut. I had a top notch setup done. The result? Nothing short of amazing. It sounds incredible and plays like a dream. I don't even play my Gibson Les Paul anymore because it doesn't compare. After everything I've done I've spent less than I did on the Gibson and have a guitar that is much better, IMO. Even without significant modding you get a well built guitar that sounds pretty dang good. Folks, even a 2000 dollar guitar can have fret buzz, especially after being shipped from overseas and then across the country. Start with a guitar that is visually appealing, feels good in your hands and has reasonable build quality. Get a pro set up(bye bye fret buzz). Don't be afraid to upgrade hardware, pickups or electronics. You can build an awesome les Paul for far less than a 2 thousand dollar Gibson that will probably still need work to match what you have built. Plus, you will have a unique guitar that you love. The cons? Gibbys have better resale (they better for what you pay). If you want high performance for less, buy one and upgrade. If you want serious bang for buck and aren't into modding, buy one and get a pro setup. It's still a bargain. I have several 1000-2000 plus dollar guitars. But why spend more if you don't have to?

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro Electric Guitar:

Very good guitar that compares well to the tone and feel of a Gibson. Two issues, not happy about scarf neck joint but this does not affect tone or feel and you have to play several of these guitars to find a good one.. check the pots and height of the action don't pick the guitar because of the finish.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro Electric Guitar:

Loved this guitar right out of the box. I got the translucent blue and looked incredible. I've been playing guitar for about the past 6-7 years but the only electric I ever had was a squire stratocaster, so I was looking for that next step up to keep me going, and finally this Christmas had the time and money to invest in a new electric. I'm not extremely experienced or anything, but this guitar had the sound and feel I was looking for. Definitely a drastic change from the non-stop humming pickups on the squire. Would definitely recommend.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro Electric Guitar:

This is an awesome guitar. It is not quite a Gibson but the price is four times less also.
The pickups sound great and the coil tapping gives a huge variety of tones. The appearance is classic and beautiful. I have the cherry sunburst and could not be happier. The flamed maple top is gorgeous. The Grover tuners work perfectly.
My friend has a genuine Gibson LP a standard and is impressed that mine sounds comparable and cost less. I visit the Guitar Center frequently "just looking" and am yet to find anything that sounds or plays better than this.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro Electric Guitar:

Overall this has been a great intermediate guitar for me. Love the way it looks and presents. Plays very well in it's own right. I also own a Gibson LP Standard and it does highlight a few shortcomings of the Epi. The pots are a little bit odd on the Epi in that it's difficult to dial in a specific volume when you're on a distorted channel - it may just be my guitar though. In addition, the sustain isn't quite as good but hey, for the price, it's a great value. I may change out a few of the electronics and see how it plays. Overall though, a solid playing guitar and great looker.
