Overview

Since its introduction almost 20 years ago, The Special-II has met the needs of countless musicians with its combination of Les Paul features, great tone and affordability. The Special II Plus Top Limited Edition Electric Guitar is made with a flamed maple top, mahogany body, bolt-on mahogany neck, smooth 22-fret rosewood fingerboard, and is every bit as handsome as its uptown cousins.

Providing the sizzle and snarl that you can only get from humbuckers is a 650R (neck) and 700T (bridge) pickup combo. You'll be amazed how these U.S.A. designed pickups with their high-output magnets add more highs with increased definition and no muddiness. Slightly over-wound, the hotter 700T bridge pickup is smooth but can give you a little extra scream or growl when you need it while never losing its rich combination of enhanced lows and crystal clear highs.

Check the drop-down menu to the right to select colors and/or other options.

Well, I might as well write a review on this guitar to help other potential buyers out. If you are thinking about buying this guitar, all I can honestly say is go ahead and get it but realize one thing.....you WILL need to do a setup and possible pickup replacement. I bought this guitar in the sunburst color because they only had one blue one and it was in a store. I don't know about the rest of you but I am NOT going to pay full price on a guitar that is in the store and everyone had handled. If I am going to pay full price, then I want a new one in the box. Now besides all of that, on with the review..... The Guitar plays fine after a setup. Neck, pickup height, and intonation adjustments. You know, basic stuff. After playing it thru a solid state amp and playing it thru a tube amp, I come to realize that the stock pickups were in dire need of replacement to make this guitar sound great. I bought the Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker Set. SH-2 Jazz model at the neck and SH-4 model at the bridge. I also had a guitar tech wire it for coil splitting, install push/pull pots at the vol and tone, and install a switchcraft jack. Now this guitar sounds GREAT! After these mods, I couldn't be happier with the guitar and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg to do them. Like I said at the beginning, you will have to do a setup and possible pickup replacement to get this guitar to play and sound the way you want it to. Other than all of this, the frets and the overall fit and finish are good. Hope this review helps.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Plus Limited Edition Electric Guitar:

This guitar was my first ever electric guitar! When I was 14 I had saved up all my money from chores to get it so the moment I finally bought it, it was perfect for me! 9 years later I still play it and have done all my own modifications to it. I've swapped pickups and tuners as well as the bridge entirely. I got a bridge that ended up costing me almost the equivalent of the guitar when I got older lol. This guitar is great and has lasted me quite a long time. I feel like I cant sell it even though I have different guitars now, and quite frankly I don't want to. It sounds awesome still and for anyone looking to start playing guitar this is a GREAT choice. Later on when you can hear a difference I recommend upgrading the parts and this baby will treat you well. Great place to start right here!

Great guitar, not the greatest service

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Plus Limited Edition Electric Guitar:

Came with a nice gouge out of it. Very well packed with bubble wrap and lots of paper. Looked like a floor model. Once I got it cleaned up and restrung it played outstanding. A lot of guitar for the money that's for sure, I'm very impressed with it. Still not happy about the chunk out of it though, probably won't be doing business with Guitar Center again.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Plus Limited Edition Electric Guitar:

Personally, I love, love, love...acoustic guitars, and I own quite a few, alright...too many! Nonetheless, playing in a church band, I thought it would be great to have an electric guitar. I've always loved Gibson electric guitars, but I didn't want to make a huge investment...not yet. I purchased this guitar and I love the way it sounds. For the price, it sounds phenomenal. HOWEVER, my biggest complaint are the tuners. They are the absolute worst quality. Half way through a song, the guitar is out of tune. I can tune it and two minutes later, its out again. Overnight, the tuners slip significantly. When tuned and holding...an awesome guitar. I haven't decided if I'm going to trade it in, or keep it and change the tuners. Other than that, the guitar looks awesome and sounds awesome.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Plus Limited Edition Electric Guitar:

I bought this five years ago, it's been now temporarily sacrificed to the "mod gods."
It was bought with the thought of "oh my God, I have a Les Paul!" and less on the fact of price-point and that it may have had bad tuners. I recommend if anyone is serious about making this guitar last, REPLACE THE TUNERS!!!
they make it much less of a pain in the badooskie to play, and boy do I remember re-tuning it after every darn song I'd practice.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Plus Limited Edition Electric Guitar:

My first guitar was a Yamaha spanish style. While gorgeous, the neck is really wide and this deterred me from truly getting into the guitar. A month into lessons, my instructor let me play his Fender Stratocaster. I was in love with the size of the neck and the action. So I started hunting for an affordable electric. I came across the Les Paul Special II in the "transparent blue" color on sale at GS. Not only is it absolutely stunning, but it plays really well for the price. I feel like it needs to be tuned before each session but no big deal. I am absolutely in love with practicing on this!

I always liked the Les Paul model guitar. Eppiphone is a good brand, now owned by the Gibson company. It may not be a Gibson, but is not too far removed from it.

Semi Novice. I played in local bands back in the 60's, but gave it up, as I grew up. Decided to pick it up again, after 45 years.
Neck was very straight, and the action set to specs. I lowered the action to the minimum, without any problems.
Also bought a Fender Mustang I to practice on, with headphones.
Fingers are soft, but it's starting to come back.

I've never played much professionally, in the early 80's I played for a local band, The Country Outlaws. I've been playing off but mostly on since I was 8 years old when my grandmother (who played) bought me my first guitar. You know the one, plastic with fishing line for strings. LOL Being able to play guitar has been therapy for me ever since a head-on collision with a drunk driver in 08' which left me disabled but still able to play my musical instruments. Thank you Lord ! Mine is the blue transparent color and I love it!
