Overview

The new Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor-II PRO honors the 'President of Bebop Guitar' and one of the most prolific and groundbreaking electric guitarists in the history of jazz. The Joe Pass Emperor II PRO is a true archtop guitar with hand-scalloped bracing and sound post and features Epiphone's critically acclaimed new ProBucker pickups with coil-tapping plus the new Graphtech NuBone XL nut. And now available in a be'tiful new Wine Red color finish.

During his long career, Joe Pass's advanced harmonic knowledge and seemingly endless well of melodic ideas made him the premier accompanist for the top singers and soloists in the world of jazz including Les McCaan, Ella Fitzgerald, Chet Baker, Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown, and Milt Jackson. The new Joe Pass Emperor II PRO is a fitting tribute to Joe, who was a great inspiration and friend to Epiphone and guitarists throughout the world.

A True Archtop
The Joe Pass Emperor-II PRO is a true archtop with a Select Spruce top and classic 'arch' that's supported by hand-scalloped bracing and a carefully positioned sound post for optimum tone. The back and sides of the Emperor II are made from Laminated Flame Maple and the Emperor-II PRO is available in be'tiful finishes. The top also has a bound ‚'tortoise‚' style pickguard shaped to House of Stathopoulo's unique profile along with our signature metal 'E.'

The Emperor-II PRO has a hand-set 3-piece laminated hard Maple neck with a Rosewood fingerboard that has beautiful pearloid block inlays, 20 medium jumbo frets, and is topped off with the Epiphone-vintage style 'tree of life‚' design seen on the best Epi archtops since the late 1930s. The Emperor-II PRO features the new Graphtech NuBone XL nut that is as hard as bone but will last a lifetime. Graphtech molds and engineers each NuBone XL nut for consistent tone and string balance as well as precise string spacing.

The Emperor-II PRO has Grover Rotomatic 18:1 ratio machine heads for fast, intuitive, and worry-free tuning. The black and white truss rod cover has an elegantly lettered "Joe Pass Emperor-II PRO" in white.

ProBucker Humbuckers
The Joe Pass Emperor-II PRO gets its name from the new critically acclaimed ProBucker humbuckers. The first generation of humbuckers (often called "Patent Applied For" for the tell-tale sticker found on the back of the pickups) were made at the Epiphone/Gibson factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan in the late 50s and have acquired a mythical status among guitar players.

Epiphone ProBucker pickups have that elusive tone bec'se they are made with the same alloy as the originals--18% Nickel Silver unit bases and covers--along with Sand cast Alnico II magnets and high quality 4-conductor lead wire. Each ProBucker pickup is also vacuum wax potted to eliminate microphonics.

The Emperor-II PRO has a ProBucker-2 in the neck position and a slightly hotter ProBucker-3 in the lead position. Both pickups also have coil-tapping via their individual volume controls. Coil-tapping allows a player to turn a humbucker pickup into a single coil pickup for endless tone combinations. The Joe Pass Emperor-II PRO also sounds great unplugged and at low volume for players who strive for those classic horn-like tones like Joe Pass played.

Each ProBucker pickup's volume and tone are attenuated by Top Hat control knobs with metal inserts that are spaced slightly farther apart than a typical archtop along with a 3-way pickup selector with an ivory-colored toggle cap.

Epiphone-tough Hardware
The Emperor-II PRO has rock solid nickel hardware in elegant gold and a vintage style gold scroll tailpiece, a design inspired by vintage Kalamazoo-made archtops. The Emperor-II PRO is strung at the factory with Joe Pass-approved D'Addario 10-46 gauge strings. And setting the intonation for the Emperor-II PRO is easy with a floating Rosewood bridge with thumbwheels for quick height adjustment.

Comments about Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor-II PRO Electric Guitar:

I have played for over 30 years, but the bulk of that time has been acoustic tunes. This guitar was a re-entry into the world of electrics, and I play mostly jazz, blues, and some modern music.

The good - this guitar comes out of the box well set up and ready to play. no fret buzz, good strings. What I liked about this guitar apart from the looks is that, unlike most of what you get from Chinese guitars, the guts or gear are high quality - 18:1 grover tuners, gibson probucker pickups, pop up knobs to switch to single coil, and quality selector switch. There really isn't anything to change out. For the money, it's a great buy, and has amazing tone. I played this against Gretch 5620 and Ibanez Artcore - the pickups were clearly superior on the Epiphone, and the sound was much smoother and mellow.

The bad - this guitar was made in Indonesia, not China. I honestly don't know the difference, other than Indonesia seems to have more low end factories. The guitar came in without appearance flaws, but the sticker was a surprise. The other disappointment was with shipping. Guitar center offered a faster ground shipping option for $5 extra - still took 9 days to get to me (including weekends).

Comments about Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor-II PRO Electric Guitar:

I received one as a gift with Joe Pass signature on it about 15 years ago. I use it with a Fender 50 Wat tube amp. It has great sound and tone, especially if you play jazz. It is very easy on the fingers and the action can be adjusted if necessary. Very easy to bend strings to the perfect pitch. I recommend it to Jazz payers and those who like a warm clean sound. I only have one trouble with it, the output where I plug the amp cable gets loose very often and needs to be hand tightened but it is not a big issue.

Comments about Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor-II PRO Electric Guitar:

I've had a bunch of high dollar jazzboxes- Gibson L5, Guild X-500, Guild X-550. Of course the refinement of those guitars is a bit better than the Epi Joe Pass Emperor- nitro lacquer finish, nibs on the ends of the frets., a bit higher quality fingerboard wood, etc. BUT, it's not night and day at all!

The fit and finish of this guitar is totally amazing for the price. The neck is great, inlays extremely well done, hardware is good quality, the pickups are much improved from earlier Epiphones.

From 5 ply binding all over the guitar, to the gold hardware, to the precision cut "Tree of Life" inlay on the headstock, you really can't find anything to complain about this classy big bodied guitar.

BTW, the body size is just right for me, and I'm 6'2. The larger bodied jazzboxes I've had before just weren't as comfortable.

The tones are just what you'd expect for a jazz guitar- warm, fat hollowbody sounds. But with the laminated spruce top, and maple back and sides, there is a clarity that you sacrifice with a solid top guitar when playing at higher volumes. The ES--175 is a jazz standard because of the laminated body, and the Emperor sounds very similay.

        Service and delivery comments:

I walked into Guitar Center without thinking about buying a guitar, and saw this beautiful axe hanging on the wall. I took it into a private room, and 15 minutes later out came the $$$. No setup was necessary; it plays great straight from the factory.
