Ok here's the skinny on this little monster. All I have ever owned are gibson's.I have a flying v a paul and a les paul custom. The way I have this explorer set up its plays just as nice as any of the above. If you have checked out the reviews on this guitar most people say to replace the pickups. The stock pickups in this guitar are not that bad.I replaced mine to a gibson Tony Iommi in the bridge. Now the guitar absolutly screams.I played a gibson at the local guitar center and my epiphone plays just as well.Believe it or not I perfer the epiphone.Right now my band is working on our second album and I have used this little demon on almost every song.Trust me this is not just a stand in for a gibson.I'm so impressed with this axe I'm thinking about getting a epip gothic sg.So if your thinking about buying one and dont mind putting a little extra cash in a bridge pickup this baby is a winner. In short epiphone guitar's RULE !!!!!!!

I purchased the Epiphone 1958 Gothic Explorer a few months ago and I was very disappointed with what I got. First of all, the wood cannot be mahogany as listed on the product info. The headstock is significantly heavier than the body. When you stand up with the guitar on you it constantly falls on its head. You are forced to constantly hold up the guitar and the unbalanced weight starts to wear on your left hand. It might be fine if you don't play that much or just strum power chords. But the unbalanced weight slows you down for anything else. I read other reviews and others also think its not mahogany but instead alder, a lighter white wood. I checked through some youtube videos of people playing and I saw one where someone scrapped off the gothic finish. I was unsurprised to see that the wood underneath looked exactly like alder and not mahogany. I Don't know if this is an error in the product info or that Epiphone ripping you off. Other than that the tone knob has a very limited range. Just strum a chord and then toggle the tone knob, you'll hear that there is not much difference between 0-10. That might be fine for a beginner but for someone who really wants to shape their sound its unresponsive. Also the harmonics on the guitar aren't good. The stock pick ups don't have the highs to really support your harmonics; artifial, natural, and especially pinch.

Comments about Epiphone Goth 1958 Explorer Electric Guitar:

This is my baby!!!! I bought it about six years ago and have never been more pleased. The only downfalls are the pickups the biggie is that it is very neck heavy I was gonna put a weight in it but there is no room to fit one so I went and bought a really expensive leather strap and that took care of the problem. Take it to a shop to intonated and adjusted as soon as you get it!! mine had a fret buzz had the truus adjusted all is great I would take it over a high priced explorer any day

    Good overall

    By GEOFFREY

Comments about Epiphone Goth 1958 Explorer Electric Guitar:

Overall this guitar is good, especially for the price. I bought this because I needed a good solid practice guitar. Well it was a good decision as this guitar is very sturdy and solidly built. The pickups are decent (I would replace them with EMG 81 60 or 81 85). My two complaints with this guitar are 1) the second day I had the guitar, the top strap screw flew out. I'd not hard on my guitars, but it's just placed very poorly and although I was able to fix the problem it's not a small deal to have that happen. The bottom one is loose as well but because of it's placement hasn't come out. Idk if this was just a one time incident but it was something to make note of. The other thing is the white gray residue that accumulates on the neck from playing. I have to wipe if off regularly because as anyone knows it's weird to have something on your neck. Overall I'm happy with the guitar and would recommend it as it plays nicely and the guitar itself is very sturdy. Great for any intermediate player.

    Great beginner guitar

    By James Thompson

Comments about Epiphone Goth 1958 Explorer Electric Guitar:

I was learning to play using a used Squire Strat I had bought of CL for my son about a dozen years ago, but decided to upgrade to this baby. Beautiful black finish, strings smooth as glass (so they don't hurt your fingers as much when you are first learning to play), the guitar was in perfect shape when I picked it up at GC. Had it shipped to GC to save on the shipping. Only been playing it a few weeks but, I really enjoy practicing with this guitar rather than the Squire. On this axe you will easily put in your 15-20 minutes of practice recommended when you are learning. It is lighter than the Strat and seems to stay in tune relatively well. It fits into my Roadrunner case easily. I love the shape and feel of the guitar.

Comments about Epiphone Goth 1958 Explorer Electric Guitar:

If you are looking for an explorer check this one out. It's everything that you'll need in the explorer line. Epiphone does a Great job on this instrument, looks, feel, sound and, playability it's all there. They must have spent some time on the neck because the frets and neck feel smooth as glass. I did some very minor adjustments as to lower the action and, tweak the truss rod very little. Intonation was perfect. I replaced the stock strap button on the top with a Dunlop strap lock mainly because when standing there is a fairly sharp bend in the strap not a straight pull like most guitars and, I thought it could possibly come off while playing at any rate it's cheap insurance for peace of mind. The all black finish and, hardware are very cool and, not having fret markers gives the neck a very clean look but, there are side markers so don't worry about knowing where you're going while jamming out. The XII on the 12th fret is very distinctive also. I tuned it up plugged it into my amp and, gave it a good workout, clean and overdrive sounds were right on, the mini Grover tuners never faltered and, stayed in tune perfectly. I highly recommend this instrument for anybody wanting an explorer model.

Comments about Epiphone Goth 1958 Explorer Electric Guitar:

I recieved this instrument just recently and, I was very pleased. For the money spent it is a good value. MF always comes through with a Great deal, I've never had any complaints. Intonation was spot on, I lowered the action and tweaked the truss rod very slightly and, that's all. Plugged it into my amp checked the electronics and, played this black beauty for about 2hrs. clean and, overdrive absolutely no complaints. I did add a dunlop strap lock to front part of the guitar just because of the sharp angle that the strap has when attached. The feel of the satin neck is Great and, after lowering the action playing was a pure pleasure. I have a flying V and, many other instruments and, this purchase was mainly to add to my collection. I'm looking forward to this weekends gig to giving it a workout. I always the enjoy the challenge of playing a new and different instrument. Compared to a Strat or a LP it definately has a different feel and look but, don't let that hang you up this is really cool guitar and fun to play. I wasn't sure about the absence of the fret board markers but, it has markers on the side and, that's all you really need anyway. The neck really looks cool without them and, the XII marker on the 12th fret is very distinctive. I am glad that I own this instrument and, would recommend it to anyone looking for an explorer type guitar.

      Killer Guitar

Comments about Epiphone Goth 1958 Explorer Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar for christmas, and haven't put it down since. This guitar sounds great with distortion, and has an amazing clean tone, considering its price. This guitar should cost way more, because it sounds great, looks really cool, and stays in tune very well, even in low tuning like drop C. I have compared this to a $900 Fender Strat, and i would take this over the Strat any day. This is basically a Gibson explorer minus $1000. Just Buy this guitar asap.

Comments about Epiphone Goth 1958 Explorer Electric Guitar:

Ive had this since last year and i do say its one of the best guitars ive played. It feels and plays nicely I think the pickups are perfect for this guitar. I do have one problem and it makes me mad every time it happens, the strap holders dont hold very well and it may just be the strap though so i say buy the guitar its worth the money.

      Great Guitar

      By Casey Coates

      from Princeton, West Virginia

Comments about Epiphone Goth 1958 Explorer Electric Guitar:

I've had this guitar for a while now, and it's still one of my favorites. I got it used from a music shop in bluefield, and other than a chip in the paint the previous owner tried to cover up, it's in mint condition. Mine's actually from '58, so there may be a few differences between mine, and this one, but the humbuckers that come stock sound great. It's kind of heavy, but it's still a fantastic guitar. I played it at my first rock gig. It's a nice satin black, and there's no fret dots on the fingerboard except for the 12th fret, which has a roman numeral 12 as the inlay, but it still has the dots on the side of the neck for a cheat sheet. The tuners are great, and the guitar keeps tune very well. I took it somewhere once, and even after my amp being on top of the case, and banging around in the back of the jeep, it was still tuned when I got there and took it out. It has a really good output, and the neck is really playable. Bottom line is, it's absolutely a great guitar...especially if you're a rhythm guitar/lead singer like me.
