Overview

Epiphone's Ltd. Ed. ES-339 P-90 PRO is a modern guitar with roots firmly planted in Epiphone's classic era when Epi's famed Kalamazoo factory produced rock's most legendary instruments in the late '50s and '60s. Featuring a reduced-size ES-style body and Epiphone's new P-90R PRO "soapbar" pickups, the ES-339 P-90 PRO semi-hollowbody turns back the clock while breaking new ground in sound and style. Case sold separately.

A Legend Reborn
First introduced in the late '50s, the original ES Series became an instant rock classic that brought the feel and look of an archtop to a generation of players who had grown up playing solid body guitars like the Les Paul. But for some, ES-style archtops felt too bulky to play on stage or in the studio. Now, the ES-339 P-90 PRO is the perfect remedy featuring smaller body dimensions while still retaining the bell-like tone the ES Series is famous for. And, just like Epi's nouveau classic ProBucker humbuckers, the P-90 PRO "soapbar" pickups are a stunning recreation of the first generation of handwound P-90s which many consider the best single-coil pickup ever made.

Solid Epiphone Construction
The Epiphone Ltd. Ed. ES-339 P-90 PRO features a reduce-size laminated maple body with a solid center block like original ES-style classics and a black pickguard with metal "E" insignia. The mahogany SlimTaper "D" profile 24.75" scale neck has 22 medium-jumbo frets and is hand-set and glued with a mortise and tenon neck joint with Titebond glue. The 12" radius neck features a rosewood fingerboard with pearloid inlays and a 1.68" nut. Single-ply cream binding on the fingerboard and body completes the classic look.

Introducing the new Epiphone P-90R PRO
The Ltd. Ed. ES-339 P-90 PRO features Epiphone's P-90R PRO "soapbar" pickup, a true recreation of the first generation of P-90 pickups found in Les Pauls. Epiphone P-90R PRO single-coil pickups are individually voiced for rhythm and lead and provide a huge variety of sound choices for the modern guitarist. For those used to carrying two or three guitars to get all their favorite sounds, the Ltd. Ed. ES-339 P-90 may be all you'll ever need to take to a gig from now on.

Epiphone's guaranteed electronics also include standard controls for each pickup's volume and tone with smooth black tophats with metal inserts, a tough 3-way toggle switch, and an all-metal heavy-duty Epiphone 1/4" output jack that gives you a lifetime of worry-free use.

Tough Epiphone Hardware
The Ltd. Ed. ES-339 P-90 PRO features rock-solid hardware including Epiphone's LockTone Tune-o-matic bridge and Stopbar tailpiece along with "Deluxe" tuners with tulip style buttons.

This is a new guitar set-up from Epiphone with the addition of the p90's. Liked the range of the p90's so I'd gave it a chance (apparently mine is the first review). As stated fit and finish excellent I found no flaws. Natural was beautiful. Guitar was shipped out of Memphis which happens to be Gibson's home base where the semi-acoustic models are built. Wouldn't be surprised if they used Gibson's Plex system as their set-up is excellent (label said it was inspected and set-up in USA). If you want the coil splitters you won't find them on this guitar as they are single coil pups. Tone with P90's ranges from acoustic-like to down and dirty with a lot of variance in between, great range, great addition, excellent value. In addition to a number of other guitars I have a three year old Gibson Les Paul. The Les Paul is much more expensive but I would match the quality control on the Epiphone to it with the Epiphone having more tonal range. Hope this was helpful.

I ordered the Pelham Blue P90 Pro ES-339. Arrived reasonably on time (shipped to Canada), customs included so no surprises on delivery. Out of the box, the guitar looked stunning, neck was dead flat after tuning to pitch and needed some relief. The guitar intonated well at the twelfth fret but due to a plastic nut cut slightly shallow it was playing sharp at the first fret. Here comes the big disappointment though... the frets buzzed pretty badly at both the top (2nd-5th frets) and bottom of the neck around the 10-12th frets even with neck and bridge adjustments. Tuning stability was also not that great as one would expected with a plastic nut. The fretboard also felt a little sticky and the frets themselves were dull. Since the neck was dead straight and neck joint was reasonably well seated, I did the rocker test on the frets and a couple of them were high. I decided to opt for a fret job on the guitar (included reseating/pressing two frets and filing another one), and had a new Tusq nut installed (massively improving tuning stability and enhancing the tone). NOW, the guitar plays like a dream. The only minor thing left is slight rattle you get from the retention spring on the epiphone tune-o-matic bridge... but that is a common complaint for most epi owners (same on my 2012 Epi Les Paul Custom Pro and my Epi AlleyKat). The growling P90 pickups and unique look of the Pelham Blue model make it worth buying on sale even if you have to drop some money on setup/fret work. Best though to try one out at your local store to avoid major issues. I didn't bother sending it back to Musician's Friend as cross-boarder returns can be a huge headache. In the end, any foreign massed-produced guitar bought online runs the risk of having setup, fret, pickup, and/or wiring issues from being mass produced and shipping from humid/hot climates. Despite the issues I am still giving it 3.5 stars because it is so fun to play.

Comments about Epiphone ES-339 P90 PRO Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Great guitar, finish looks like a classic car. I got mine in pelham blue. Neck is comfy, p90's are exactly what I wanted. Not muffled, clear and tuneful. Can bring the crunch on the bridge. Only problem I had was a defect on the headstock and MF took care of that by giving a credit on my next order. I could've sent it back but I was in love. Hadn't had a Epi in a long time and this will probably put them back in my hands. Check it out!

Comments about Epiphone ES-339 P90 PRO Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

First off, I love this guitar, I cant put it down. it sounds great with my orange crush 35rt. My only complaint is that when the volume is over 4, the pickups are CRAZY loud and feedback-y. I know that this is normal with p90s but its kind of surprising the first time you hear it. Other than that, its a solid guitar and i would recommend it to any intermediate guitarist.

Comments about Epiphone ES-339 P90 PRO Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Very nice. This is my third Epiphone P90 guitar. What can I say? I love P90s. The scaled down size of the ES339 is more comfortable to play than a ES-335/Casino. The guitar is light weight @ 7 lbs 3.5 oz. The setup wasn't terrible but needed minor tweaking. I lowered the bridge and adjusted intonation. The neck is very straight allowing a very low action. The P90s sound wonderful. It sounds like my SG but more full and woody. Compared to the Casino, the 339 is a tad less resonant but without the feedback. Fit and finish was pretty much flawless. I still can't believe they can offer a guitar of this quality at the price they do. I bought the Wine Red version for Three Twenty delivered! Incredible!!

I use this for jamming and practicing, and recording. Great guitar, I do recommend buying. The tone on this guitar is amazing. Holding this guitar is comfortable, it's perfect. The price is a little much for a beginner, but it sure is a great investment. Size is perfect compared to es 335 or es 333.

the guitar was great the only problem I in countered was confusion with guitar center The guitar was listed as in stock, when I emailed guitar center the return email stated that they would ship it out as soon as they got it in stock, when I sent another email asking guitar center why was it marked on the ad as in stock and they told me was not I received the guitar with in two days.

Comments about Epiphone ES-339 P90 PRO Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I have had nothing but outstanding success with Epiphone Semi-Hollow bodies. I've owned a DOT and a Lucille... both of the "full sized" examples of the ES-335. As much as I loved those... they just never seemed to fit right. I had eyed the 339 for quite some time and when I got a coupon for 15% off for Labor Day, well... I popped for it. I am utterly thrilled that I did. Everything I've grown to love about the Epi 335 series... but the size is PERFECT for me!!!! Yes... as many have said, a little tweaking out of the box. Had to drop the bridge of course. Neck relief looks about PERFECT. I've yet to dial in the intonation as I'm having way too much fun PLAYING it. First thing I always do with any electric is to plug it in to my (now somewhat "vintage") Peavey Studiopro 112 and set all the tone knobs on the amp to neutral. I want to hear what this thing sounds like "unadjusted" out of the box. I've never owned P-90's before and if these are an example of what I've been missing, then I have truly been deprived. LOVE the sounds I get from this guitar!!!! I'm not noticing the "noise" others are chagrining over... perhaps that's because I cut my teeth on an original Univox tube amp from 1965? The ranges of sounds... the clarity and yes, I actually LIKE this thing mildly over-driven! Considering I am a HUGE fan of "clean" that's saying a LOT! Guitars have come and gone in my stable. THIS one... is most definetly a KEEPER. Mine is Chuck Berry Red (read - cherry) and exceptionally well finished. I've gone over it quite closely and truth be told I suppose maybe there's flaws but they are so minute as to not matter.

PROTIP: I gotta chuckle... as it had not been a while having ordered from G.C. I had only ordered the guitar. A few days later I got a "Welcome Back" email from G.C. with a COUPON for 20% off anything $49 or more... so I immediately popped for the CASE. This baby WILL BE... well protected!!!

Comments about Epiphone ES-339 P90 PRO Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

This is a beautiful looking and wonderful sounding instrument for a hollow body. With effects pedals you can do almost anything with this. it is light, very well balanced, easy to play and the combinations available with the factory set up are enough to cover a huge spectrum of established sounds. I found on the guitar i purchased ( made in china) the bridge needed replacement to a higher quality engineered product ( i changed to a bikini bridge ) as the workmanship was not good there and intonation was very difficult to get right and maintain. add purchase, change the nut to bone add a purchase, change the strap support to button location to the upper horn.
The neck is superb, The electronics and pickups excellent. I also changed the tuners from the chinese grover to gotoh but I may review this. So once you are set up it is a wonderful instrument for the money and really smooth to play, For a hollow body minimum 10gge has been advised and that was good advice , I tried 9's but I suppose that's a personal thing as well

I've been playing and repairing guitars for over 50 years. This is one of the best guitars I ever bought new, Everything is Gibson like. The pickups sound very vintage great. The tuners stay in tune after a week of not playing it. The innotation was right on with plenty of adjustment left if needed. I got the red one which is beautiful and can't find a flaw in the finish. The only thing I did to this guitar which is unheard of was lower the action just a hair. I hope you get the kind of guitar I got because I'm giving this guitar a 10 out of 10. One guitar I will never sell. With the binding on the neck and the vintage tuners and pickups it should say Gibson on the headstock. Extremely pleased. Plus I never write a review.
