Overview

The Epiphone ES-175 Electric Guitar brings back one of the world's most beloved instruments. In 1949 Gibson introduced the ES-175 to enduring and well-deserved acclaim. Since it was primarily an electric guitar, it didn't need the very large dimensions of a classic archtop, but it still benefited from the full hollowbody resonance of an archtop design enhanced by Gibson's fabulous new humbuckers. This Epiphone version has the same sumptuous vintage vibe of the original, including dual Alnico Classic humbuckers, a meticulously applied sunburst finish, split parallelogram fretboard inlays on a bound rosewood fretboard, rosewood bridge base, gold top hat knobs, and deco trapeze tailpiece.

Features
  • Maple top, back and sides
  • Set mahogany neck
  • Rosewood fretboard and bridge base
  • Alnico Classic humbuckers

I wasn't expecting all that much from a guitar in this price range. However, I was literally shocked by the tone, playability and quality of this instrument. The neck and fretwork were top-notch, the finish was excellent and most of all the tone was impecable. While I think of the ES175 mostly as a jazz guitar, the Epiphone USA designed pickups are a bit hotter than other jazz boxes with a little more high end bite, something like a Burstbucker. You can use this guitar for Jazz by rolling off the tone a hair, but I'd say it's equally strong in the blues and rock vein as well. The clarity, responsiveness and feel of this instrument are like nothing else I've playing in this price range.

This thing plays well but the color in the picture is not as orange as the actual guitar, its a two tone cheap burst not a three tone nice burst. One of the volume nobbs has a buzz unless it's all the way maxes. The cord that epiphone made and sent in the box was defective. If you use other tunings this guitar is not for you it is good for only regular tuning.

Byrdland Hopeful

By DOUG CRABTREE

from Ohio

Comments about Epiphone ES-175 Reissue Electric Guitar:

On the day of getting this guitar not a bad setup but did some tweaking and then the G string just broke.Cheap strings I guess but didn't really expect more. The build is great and quality is really good.I put a set of GHS Boomer #9s on and this thing is purring now.I have always wanted a Gibson Byrdland but they are rare to find and beyond my spending limits so this is my alternative for now but I am not complaining. Great tones and chunky bottoms are making me smile as I start to find myself and my love for that Ted Nugent sound I've been looking for!I'm playing through a Fender Ultimate Chorus Amp with a DigiTech GSP1101 preamp processor and this thing is really starting ti kick!!! Nice work from Epiphone on this one!!!!! A steal for the Money

Epiphone ES-175

By Robert Roth

from Elgin IL

Comments about Epiphone ES-175 Reissue Electric Guitar:

Great guitar, great price. Just got mine last week (October 2011), part of a new shipment. Was surprised that the pickups, bridge, tail piece and pickguard holder are now all gold plated, and not chrome like the earlier version. Only wish they took the gold plating all the way and also used gold plated tuners, instead of the chrome plated tuners. The knurled nut on the flipper switch is still chrome, but that's so minor.

A rockin' blues machine

By Old Timer

Comments about Epiphone ES-175 Reissue Electric Guitar:

I bought an Epi. ES-175 a few weeks ago and have good raves about it. For the money you can't beat it. It's built well and sounds great. I bought it for some mellow woodsey tones but it turns out it is a really good blues axe too. Out of the box it played well. It comes with 11's but changed down to 10's and still sounds good. My other guitars have 9's but I won't go that low on this. When you're not plugged in it sounds good acoustically too. It's not a Gibson but for the money...hey

This Axe Exposes the Rest as Hype

By Jazz-Bossa Confusion

from Greater Baltimore Area

Comments about Epiphone ES-175 Reissue Electric Guitar:

I wish I had made the decision to buy this guitar four years ago. In the interim I made a few costly, lame decisions, including months of effort to find The Holy Grail of Guitar Tone. Being a very subjective artform, regarding likes and dislikes, the Oracle of Music dictates that it would be unwise to tell you that this guitar smokes Gibson's ES175 or Ibanez George Benson models. Personally, I'm connected to this guitar through its excellent pickups (and they CAN develop volume), it's thin-ish straight, rock-hard neck with buttery-smooth action all up and down the neck; it stays in tune with spot-on intonation anywhere along the neck. This last one is EXTREMELY important to me. It's light, maple-laminate construction (surprising this die-hard spruce-top aficionado), solid as a Sherman tank, AND IS AFFORDABLE! I actually paid cash for this one...the last time I could do that was when I bought my first acoustic some 20 years ago! What it comes down to is tone and playability. Although I particularly like the limited-edition "antique sunburst" model that I bought (it's an amber sunburst), I didn't buy it for looks. Simply stated, this guitar has THE MOST DELICIOUS TONE of any guitar I own when teamed up with my Tech21 Trademark 60.

What a nice Fiddle

By Dan

from Hinckley,Il

Comments about Epiphone ES-175 Reissue Electric Guitar:

After many month's of researh, I finally set my sights on the es-175. For the money you won't be dissapointed. The neck on mine is to die for. Overall finish is very good. Some minor flaws but this guitar is 500 not 5000. Epiphone is very helpful, but I don't believe they actually inspect every one. The action was off, the bridge wasn't square, but after some minor adjustments, it plays just great.I do think you could do alot worse for the money. The sound is a little tricky to get dialed in with the alnico's but you'll find your sweet spot. All and all this axe is worth the dough.

Great guitar and incredible value

By Frank V

from Marlborough, MA

Comments about Epiphone ES-175 Reissue Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar two years ago and have loved it since the first time I played it. The craftsmanship is excellent, the action was perfect right out of the box, and of course it's absolutely beautiful to look at. Aesthetics aside, it has a gorgeous, mellow sound perfect for Jazz, yet by playing with the tone it can pick up enough bite for rocking with an attitude. I own 8 other axes (including a Les Paul), but this is my favorite hands down.

loud and proud even unplugged

By Epi dude

from East Coast

Comments about Epiphone ES-175 Reissue Electric Guitar:

I have to confess that, as much as I like the 175, the thing is loud. I mean too loud for late night sessions if you live in an apartment. It's essentially an acoustic guitar with some pickups. But here's the good news: it's a great acoustic guitar that just happens to be an electric. I find the tone a bit too dark for my taste, but I just run it through treble booster. The fit, finish, and all that is extremely nice. Overall, it's possibly my favorite guitar. The only downside is that it's not a small guitar. I find it uncomfortable to play standing up. But that's not a problem since I'm lazy enough that I rarely play when I'm not sitting down anyway.

Great axe, great price!!

By Alvaro Arango

from Bogot́, Colombia

Comments about Epiphone ES-175 Reissue Electric Guitar:

After some years of learning and listening to good music, i've always wanted to have a guitar like Steve Howe's, but a gibson ES-175 is not affordable for a 15 year old. When i saw this "Epi", i hesitated because it's price was very low, but i didn't think twice and bought it... Amazing!! it's original sound is really clean and jazzy (really beautiful and warm), but it can also be a great rock axe. Unplugged it's a gorgeous folk guitar, and it's sound with slide is very clean! This is a very versatile guitar, that gives a very complete sound in all of it's faces! No wonder why Steve Howe is such a great artist!!
