Overview

There's something magical about the big-bodied, all-maple jumbo "200" acoustic guitar. It's got a classic sound and classic look that has powered hits in rock, pop, and country for over 75 years. Now the Epiphone 2014 Limited Edition EJ-200 Artist offers you all that magic for less money.

The King of the Flat Tops, Reborn
The "200" jumbo style might be the world's most famous acoustic guitar, known equally for its majestic look and focused, complex sound. Since the late 1930s, many of the great rhythm guitarists and singers have made the "200" their primary acoustic instrument both on stage, on recordings, and even on record covers, including Don Everly, Bob Dylan, Robbie Robertson, Emmylou Harris, Elvis Presley, Gram Parsons, Buddy Holly, and Pete Townshend who used a "200" Jumbo to compose the songs for The Who's rock opera Tommy. The "200" Jumbo acoustic guitar is still a must-have for guitarists in every genre of music. And now the Ltd. Ed. "EJ-200 Artist" makes that classic sound affordable to everyone.

Based on Epiphone's legendary EJ-200, the Ltd. Ed. "EJ-200 Artist" features the same "Jumbo" body as the original with a select spruce top with hand-scalloped bracing for superior tone along with select maple back and sides which not only support the top but also help amplify its classic full-bodied tone.

The body has 6-layer black and white binding and the easy-to-play hard maple neck has a 25.5" scale length with medium frets with a 1960s SlimTaper profile that makes playing chords and rhythm easy. The hand-glued dovetail neck joint also contributes to the EJ-200 Artist's deep rich bass, clear mids, and brilliant highs that fill a room with jumbo-sized projection and volume. The solid rosewood fingerboard is fully bound and inlaid with pearloid dot inlays for a simple but elegant look. Its reverse belly rosewood bridge has a compensated saddle for solid intonation and tone. Choose from a variety of finishes from the drop-down menu.

Tuning is made easy, reliable, and intuitive with Epiphone's precision 18:1 ratio vintage style "Deluxe" tuners. The back of the headstock has a "Limited Edition" logo and the front of the headstock has a '60s era "Epiphone" logo.

Quality You Can Trust
Backed by Epiphone's Limited Lifetime Warranty and Gibson's famous 24/7/365 Customer Service, you can rest assured that your Ltd. Ed. "EJ-200 Artist" will have jumbo sound without any jumbo worries. But hurry, this is a Limited Edition model and won't last long.

I've had almost without exception good luck with open-box purchases from MF, but this one may beat them all. I still can't believe that someone returned this guitar, unless they just found it a bit too "jumbo". Nor can I believe that a guitar of this quality can sell for so little. I guess I'm showing my age. The set-up was perfect, and compares well to my 1973 Gibson J-160 E as far as intonation and play-ability of the neck are concerned. No, the finish doesn't compare, the bridge and nut are plastic and it doesn't come with a case. I'm still astounded. I've played this guitar(finger-style, flat-pick) for a couple hours, left it out in the room, put it in the back of my truck (in an old case of course!) bounced along the road with it and the thing's still in tune! It was ALMOST in tune on arrival after shipping and handling by UPS! The sound is full and rich and may brighten with time. But if it doesn't, who cares? Saying I've got my money's worth would be a gross understatement.

This is a Chinese made guitar. My first one had deep severe random orbital sander marks all over the front and back and the finish looked as if it was brushed on with a deck brush. The intonation was off more than 5 cents and in general the glue and workmanship looked extremely poor. I always expect to do a complete setup on the Asian guitars but these problems were unacceptable and uncorrectable. I thought (hoped?) maybe it was a bad reclaim that shouldn't have made it out the door. It was sent back to MF for exchange.

I received the replacement ten days later and was very disappointed that the body on this one also has noticeable random orbital sander marks in the wood and the finish has significant flaws besides looking like a bad brush job by a middle school shop student. The neck and frets are rough and uneven but it looks like they can be brought into spec with a truss rod adjustment and some serious fret leveling, crowning, and polishing. The intonation is within 5 cents at the 12th fret, which is the cutoff point for acoustics in my book -- we'll see what the truss rod adjustment and new strings do. The tone is good -- sounds like a maple jumbo is expected to sound -- and the action out of the box is unusally light and low with minimal fret buzz, despite the fret variability.

My biggest concern with this guitar is that whoever made it is has no clue how to properly shape, sand, glue, and finish wood. Bad sign for a guitar factory and really unacceptable for something bearing the Epiphone name. The Indonesian Epiphones I have (3 total) are of significantly better build and quality with immaculate finishes. Otherwise, a good sounding and acceptably playable instrument out of the box needing (hopefully) only minor adjustments. The favorable recommendation is based on value-price point compared to other similarly priced (i.e., cheap) guitars, not any great qualities of the guitar itself. I'll let it settle in and acclimate for several weeks before I go completely through it and update this review if there are any additional concerns.

Beautiful sound, but save your money

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Artist Acoustic Guitar:

The only reason I'm giving this guitar any stars is because of the sound that it produces. It's amazing! The body and the neck feel good in your hand and the headstock looks fantastic. Looks and sound aside the quality of this guitar is junk. Save your money and buy the better model. This is not worth your time. The first guitar I got, the neck was bent, sent it back, they sent a new one, the headstock was peeling off.

I replaced a 2008 that I let get away. This guitar seems just as good.

It needed a little fret work to get rid of sharp edges.

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Artist Acoustic Guitar:

this guitar was on sale. it looked and sounded great. however the 13th fret was raised so badly it was impossible to play the 12th fret on high E. I tried tapping the fret down a little, and it kind of helped but still the note was buzzing. So i took it back to guitar center. they tried to adjust the truss rod to fix it but didn't work. So they offered to take it back and order another one for me. few days later I got the 2nd guitar. It had the same problem. I tried tapping the fret again. this time it almost fixed the problem. but still theres a light buzz when i bend the note.

Another thing is, the lacquer where the neck and the body meets has cracked. same with between the headstock veneer and the wood. you can tell that they haven't bothered to sand the veneer so it aligns with the wood.

Anyway I have made my peace with these imperfections. I don't think I could ask for more from a guitar in this price range. It's still better than all the Yamaha's in this price range that my friends own.

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Artist Acoustic Guitar:

I read so many great reviews online of this guitar that when I saw it on sale for less than 200 bucks, I jumped on it. I ordered it online which was a first for me. When it arrived, it took a minute to tune up and then it just sounded amazing. However, there was one dead note spot on the 12th fret so I took it the Guitar Center store to see if they could tweek it. Turned out the 12th fret was a little higher and so I returned it. I found myself missing the sound of the guitar so I ordered another which has been perfect. The guitar is indeed jumbo but that comes with jumbo full sound. Totally great guitar for the money.

For the $$, it's a lot of guitar. If you think you're getting a $1000 one for this price, wake up. This is a discontinued model and needs to be setup by you or someone you trust. As with all guitars in this price range, I had to file the frets, change strings, change bridge pins and grind down the bridge for better intonation. It plays beautifully. One thing I couldn't do is find a case, gig bag yes, but the cases cost3 times more than the guitar. This guitar will only increase in value with time. Enjoy.
