Respectfully Disagree

By LA Jack

from Hollywood CA

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

I played this guitar a few weeks back at a GC. I read other favorable reviews but had my doubts about the laminate top. Sadly, my doubts proved to be true. This guitar is very similar to the J-200 in appearance only. I own a Martin D-28 so perhaps I'm spoiled. I was looking for a trow-around guitar, and realized that I wouldn't get a high-end sound quality. Specifically, it plays like a $50 dollar cheapo. The sound is incredibly muted and lacks any real sustain. This fits in with my experience with other laminate topped guitars. I played several other guitars (all with solid tops) that cost $350 and below, and each sounded better than the EJ-200. You can buy a Yamaha or Fender with solid spruce tops for around $200. The best guitar I played in this price range was a Seagull S6. It does not have the flashy appearance, but the sound is vastly superior for the price. But this guitar if you want to hang it on a wall, but don't buy it to play. I have yet to come across a laminate top guitar that doesn't sound like playing a cardboard box.

Totally unexpected

By (Steve) "guitarstring20722\

from Middle River, MD

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

I truly did not expect the quality of this guitar. I wanted a jumbo, but they're so expensive, and for the most part, unless you buy a Gibson, they're still rather plain looking. I bought the EJ200 for the value and I really believe I got way more than I paid for. I settled on the vintage sunburst finish for a lot of reasons. I'm glad I did. The vintage sunburst is a truly beautiful, classy finish. The gold Grover tuners and cream binding make for a superb finish. I expected a cheaper brand of tuner) It's as shiny and as perfect as a guitar finish can get. And the best part, right out of the box it played great. Really crisp highs and punchy lows. I used a medium sized pick, and the volume is incredible. The action is as perfect as it can get. I didn't have to make any adjustments. I read lots of reviews where a lot of people had to change the strings when they got theirs, but right out of the box, even the strings were nice. Aside from them getting my fingers a little black, they're fine, and I'll change them soon, but for now, I'll leave it alone. This guitar is a "must have" for beginners or pro's alike. I'm overwhelmed because I didn't expect to get the quality I received. My next guitar is gonna be the Epi Emperor Joe Pass model. If the quality is as good as my EJ200, I'll own a jewel.

Great! So much better than expected!

By Jamie

from Sacramento, California

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

I have always wanted a Gibson J200 but without selling one of my children I just cannot afford or justify spending over $3k on a guitar. I ordered the Epiphone EJ200 not expecting much for 1/10th the price of the original Gibson. I was really surprised! The sound quality out of the EJ200 is comparable to the Gibson. The finish is great and the action is perfect. I did not have any fret buzz or problems with rough frets. This is a boomer!

Looks Great, Sounds Better

By Johnny Rebel

from Fairfax, VA

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

I just got back from Guitar Center with this bad boy about an hour ago. After an hour of playing, I'm blown away. The quality and craftsmanship on this guitar is top-notch. It looks beautiful - I particularly like the "moustache" bridge. The sound is incredible - full, resonating when playing chords. Bass and treble sound great when playing arpeggio. This is a step up in quality for me. This is my third Epiphone and I've been very satisfied with all of them. I heartily recommend this guitar.

What I needed...

By Lauren

from Oklahoma City, OK

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

The EJ 200 is a wonderfully made guitar. Compared to other guitars that I have owned, I would say this is the easiest for me to play. The tone quality is very sharp, clear and deep. I definately recommend this instrument.

Very Beautiful Looks and Sound

By Brady

from Dayton, Tennessee

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

I just bought this guitar today at guitar center in Chattanooga Tennessee. I love the ease of play and oversize jumbo body. I can fret this guitar easier than I could a Canadian made Gibson. You will be very pleased with this guitar. The vintage sunburst and gold tuners with pearl just seals the deal.

Epiphone EJ 200 classic

By Steve S.

from Dayton, Ohio

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

I bought the Epi EJ 200 about a week ago after reading about and playing several models in the similar price range. The ej 200 is very smooth to play. The action is terrific. I got the natural finish which is stunning. The neck and headstock binding and nice frettboard inlay make this a handsome guitar. The tone is nice and deep with good sustain and projection. The gold plated grovers are top quality and hold true. They say it can sound even better with better strings, we will see.The only other accoustic that was in the running with this one was a Sigma by Martin. The Sigma played fantastic and sounded good but was not half as good looking as the ej200. I was a bit disappointed that the ej200 did not have a solid spruce top but the sound is great so I'm happy, besides I hear that a laminated top is not as vulnerable to humidity and temperture damage. I think this guitar is a leader in its price range.

Epiphone EJ-200, Great sound

By Kevin Hatton

from Buffalo, N.Y.

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

I just purchased an Epiphone EJ-200 Jumbo. This guitar has the sound of a $2000.00 Gibson. I tried two in the store. One had better high end response than the other, but that might have been due to older strings or setup. The one that I chose was oustanding in both it's bass end response and high end. The fit and finish are oustanding. I own many expensive top of the line instruments. I would put the Epiphone EJ-200 Jumbo up againt any of them on stage. I highly recomend this guitar.

A Good Guitar

By Jay

from Memphis

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

This is a good guitar for an intermediate player. I wanted a jumbo but didn't want to spend a whole lot on one. The guitar has a good deep sound to it. I would recommend changing the standard strings to something a little better. I put a set of D'Addario EXP12's on my guitar and it brought out the tone a lot more than the standard strings. The guitar is overall easy to play and looks great!

Best Acoustic Ive Ever Handled

By Jason Meyer

from Dallas, TX

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

Ive been playing with a Yamaha for about 3 years then I saw this Epiphone on the wall one day and I tried it out since I own an Epiphone bass. It sounded like an angel and Ive had for about 3 months and even if its from The Beatles, Chuck Berry or even Lynyrd Skynyrd this acoustic does it all. And even the strings that come with it they're superb and I havent taken them off yet. If you love the Gibson EJ-200 you'll definitely love this better.

Biggest Bang for the Buck

By Kevin Hemingway

from Ft Worth, TX

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

I have played the guitar since I was a kid... Im not going to say that Ive had nothing but quality instruments, but I've played just about everything you can think of. This guitar is by far one of the best I've played. It was hanging next to a martin that was 5 times more expensive, and it has better action, touch, and believe it or not, a way richer tone. There isnt a guitar made today that plays any better than this one in my opinion. If you want a guitar that surpasses any expectation that you will have for the price, then this guitar is for you. Way to go, Epiphone!

Amazing Value

By Jeff

from Connecticut

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

I currently own 6 guitars from Ovation, Martin and Taylor. I love them all, and paid close to, if not over, $1,000 for each of them. I only picked this Epiphone up because I thought it was the more expensive Gibson since it had beautiful inlays and a highly decorative bridge. After hearing the beautiful, familiar sound of a Gibson Jumbo coming out I was blown away when I looked at the top and discovered it was an Epiphone. Thrilled that it was only $350 I immediately purchased it and drove straight home. I never made a decision to buy a guitar so fast. In response to another review found here: No, it doesn't sound like a Martin D-28. This instrument is meant for great "twang" and deep bass, and it delivers on both. I always wanted a Jumbo but always hesitated because I never found one that played as easily and sounded this good. This model delivers in every category.

Great guitar and the price makes it that much sweeter!

By Paul Gerlach

from memphis TN

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this guitar as a factory second, mainly because the price was so good I could not pass it up. When I got it, I could not find a defect that would have rendered it a second. It came with a set of light strings and the sound was not that impressive. I restrung it with a set of nickel flatwound Thomastik-Enfield jazz guitar strings and WOW what a difference that made in the tone, deep voluminous lows and ringing highs. I own a Gibson J-200 strung in a similar manner and I don't think it sounds as good as the EJ-200. It is easy to play and has one of the most comfortable necks of any of the guitars I own. I liked this instrument so much I bought another one for my son this Christmas. To sum up the EJ-200 is a great guitar at a great price. Just get a descent set of strings and your in business!

Big Sound on a Budget

By Don Fitzpatrick

from Phoenix, AZ

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

I bought the EJ200 about a week ago and am astounded at the quality and playability of an instrument in this price range. I've been playing more than 50 years and have owned several Gibson's and other pricey flattops. This guitar is as good as any at a fraction of the price. I have the sunburst finish and really like the workmanship. A new set of strings and a minor truss rod adjustment and this box will come alive! If you want a large body without breaking the bank, give this one a try.

Respectfully Disagree with Respectfully Disagree

By Richard

from Michigan

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

I respectfully disagree about the EJ-200. In choosing the EJ-200 I played several Taylors, Martins and a Martin D-28 along with several other brands. Two EJ-200s were hanging on the wall and I picked up one that sounded absolutely awful - very thin sound, no projection at all and high action. The second EJ-200 I played was loud - had that deep grumbly bass associated with jumbos even though it's not a solid top, and very acceptable action. No cosmetic flaws that I can see. I have found no two guitars that sounded "exactly" alike. After all, no two guitars are made from the exact same piece of wood, etc. The secret is to play until you find the guitar that sounds good to you. That's why I chose this particular EJ-200 over all the other guitars on the wall - it sounded and played better. Don't pass up considering the 200 just because the headstock doesn't say Martin. It's 5 stars for the money.

Fine Playing and Sounding Guitar

By Dave

from Apple Valley California

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this guitar at Guitar Center a while back. One beautiful sounding guitar and a pleasure to play. I put extra light stings on it of my choice right after I got it. It plays beautiful and sounds beautiful. I have a Gibson Dove also. I think for the money you are not going to find anything close to the sound or the price.

Great Guitar for the Price

By Marc A

from union, nj

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

When I got this guitar, i expected it to have its faults, which it did, but i did not expect it to sound so good. The only problem with it is that the part of the bridge that holds the high e string can chip. This isn't a major problem and is not costly. Most custom shops will have a more reliable replacement. The sound of this guitar is very good. At first, i used cheaper strings, which reduced the quality of the sound. To fix that i threw on some elixer nanoweb strings and it sounds 10x better. I definitely recommend this guitar with some elixers and you'll be good.

Ole roadhog luvs this guitar

By Dennis Scruggs

from Ark City, Kansas

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

I read everything I could find on this guitar. Being in small town Kansas I could not find one to play. I took a chance and ordered off of Guitar Center site. Scary to not play it first! I have played for over 30 years and I just can't put it down. Out of the box it wowed me. The quality is remarkable. I did change strings to nano webs after a few hours. I have many hi dollar guitars but I must say I prefer playing this. When my son is home from college, it is either in his or my daughters hands. Yes it is a solid top just like it says in the ad. I would buy another in a heartbeat,

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

A few months ago my cat knocked over my acoustic and snapped the head stock right in two. Bummer right? but a blessing in disguise. Just last week i was in the market for a new one. Saw this one hanging on the wall with a price i cant repeat. Played it, bought it and took it home. String turned my finger tips black and after consulting with my father who has been playing for 40-50 yrs he advised me to put D'adario phosorus/bronze mediums on it. WOW sounds like an angel. you need to get one of these. you wount be sorry
