Overview

The Epiphone EJ-200 brings back the historic acoustic guitar deservedly known as the “King of the Flat-tops,” the J-200. Originally introduced in 1937, the J-200 set a standard for guitar excellence that others have been trying to match ever since. Today—over 70 years later—the legacy of “King of the Flat-tops” lives on in our EJ 200.

When the J-200 was first introduced, it immediately filled a need for a deeper, more balanced and powerful acoustic instrument that could project over stages and radio. The J-200 was a radical new guitar, bigger and bolder than any previous design, and gave artists in the new American music scene of the ‘30s an instrument capable of projecting well beyond that of any other acoustic on the market—a fact that still holds true today. Gene Autry and Roy Rogers frequently made the J-200 their guitar of choice for dozens of Westerns, making cowboys and their guitars forever linked. The J-200 has been the best friend of country and western music ever since. The J-200 is the acoustic guitar that every player wants whether on the open range or an open stage.

The J-200 style is simply the world’s most famous acoustic guitar, known equally for its majestic look and focused, complex sound. Every great rhythm guitarist and singer of the last century made the J-200 their primary acoustic instrument on stage (and for record covers, too) including Don Everly, Bob Dylan, Robbie Robertson, Emmylou Harris, Elvis Presley, Gram Parsons, Buddy Holly, and Pete Townshend who used a J-200 style to compose the songs for The Who's Tommy. The EJ-200 gives you everything great from this iconic and historic guitar without the headaches or the pricetag of a vintage guitar.

Ole roadhog luvs this guitar

By Dennis Scruggs

from Ark City, Kansas

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

I read everything I could find on this guitar. Being in small town Kansas I could not find one to play. I took a chance and ordered off of Guitar Center site. Scary to not play it first! I have played for over 30 years and I just can't put it down. Out of the box it wowed me. The quality is remarkable. I did change strings to nano webs after a few hours. I have many hi dollar guitars but I must say I prefer playing this. When my son is home from college, it is either in his or my daughters hands. Yes it is a solid top just like it says in the ad. I would buy another in a heartbeat,

Outstanding looks. oustanding sound. outstanding price

By Brendan Harlan

from Pennsylvania

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this guitar after playing my great uncles Gibson j100. I feel in love with the idea that i could have a guitar that sounds pretty much the same for a heck of a lot lower price. I would recomend this guitar to anyone. I love the jumbo body, if you are going for a deep warm country sound then this is the guitar to do it. I love it! Now my price range is not the highest I had to save up a little bit for this one, but it was all worth it. The action is really low and plays great picking, fingerpicking, and strumming chords. This guitar is beautiful, and it sounds as great as it looks. Great value. I would do this all over again in a heart beat!

Very good guitar for the money.

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

I have had this guitar for almost two years and I am just getting around to right a review for it. First off let me just say that it is a very good sounding guitar for a cheaper Epi. Secondly, It can take a beating very well. I've dropped it, had other people hit it accidentally on walls, etc. All in all a good buy. If you are thinking about buying it for a beginner guitar or just an extra guitar to have around, do it. Just a side note, I do not think that I will ever sell it just because it means so much to me!

Great Guitar for the Price

By Marc A

from union, nj

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

When I got this guitar, i expected it to have its faults, which it did, but i did not expect it to sound so good. The only problem with it is that the part of the bridge that holds the high e string can chip. This isn't a major problem and is not costly. Most custom shops will have a more reliable replacement. The sound of this guitar is very good. At first, i used cheaper strings, which reduced the quality of the sound. To fix that i threw on some elixer nanoweb strings and it sounds 10x better. I definitely recommend this guitar with some elixers and you'll be good.

Fine Playing and Sounding Guitar

By Dave

from Apple Valley California

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this guitar at Guitar Center a while back. One beautiful sounding guitar and a pleasure to play. I put extra light stings on it of my choice right after I got it. It plays beautiful and sounds beautiful. I have a Gibson Dove also. I think for the money you are not going to find anything close to the sound or the price.

complete satisfaction

By kana west

from portola ca

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

i just bought the ej-200 today in natural sunburst. the guitar its self is beautiful and the sound trajectory is very impressive. iv been playing guitar for 21 years now and i would suggest this guitar to any musician beginner or veteran. the sound and designer quality of the ej-200 will surely impress any guitar player. the jumbo body is another great addition to the natural amplification and for any body as big as me the extra girth is quite satisfying. i would easily compare this guitar to any martin or gibson having played many models of both brands. as i described the sound quality is very satisfying and the appearance almost matches the great gibson sj-200. this guitar is great for casual playing and even better for local gigs or friendly jam sessions. in conclusion the ej-200 will no doubt satisfy any respectful guitar player, the price is unbeatable and the guitar its self can cause any musician to occupy themselves fully. get out and buy the ej-200! you will not be disappointed. happy playing to all, so be it!

Not just a newbys guitar.

By Dave

from Eugene

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

I have been playing for many years and have played them all(Taylor,Martin) you name it. You wont find a guitar better for the price. Sure its no Taylor Ga but its very good. I put the LR Baggs stage pro element in it and my word ,I have to tell you, I don't want to play anything but this guitar on-stage now. Everyone knows that it just depend on the guitar. There are no taylor's or martin's(around even $1000) that have such a wonderful sound and feel as this guitar.Buy the the guitar put the stage pro in it and bam you have yourself a 1500 dollar guitar for only 550-600.

2 Years so far so great

By Aric

from Chicago, IL

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200 Acoustic Guitar:

Bought this in '08. Spent 3 hours switching between 3 different guitars in GC before settling on this one. Took 'em another hour to find a case to fit this guitar. Had to get a hardhsell, they didn't have any gig bags to fit jumbos. Its big, but so's the sound. Definitely a little harder to travel with on foot/public transportation. It should have been dinged a half dozen times due to my own clumsiness, but remains unscathed. I love this guitar, need to get me a cutaway, probably much smaller, so I can reach the high notes and travel more easily with an acoustic, but nothing beats sitting on my back porch with this baby. Check the price on the same guitar with the Gibson brand. (I'll save ya the trouble, $4800 list)Then check out the price on this one. It may make you think that at such a great price difference, that the Epi must be of such inferior quality that it wouldn't be worth buying. WRONG. Look, Pete Townshend has the $$ for the Gibson. The rest of us can smile with the Epi.
