I am debating on weather or not to sell this. I am not trying to recreate the sound of the Beatles, I just wanted a good acoustic-electric guitar to play.

Plugged in this guitar is just awful. The pickup is weak and terribly noisy. I have tried electric strings on it and they didn't help at all, in fact they dulled the overall sound. So I went to a mix of electric and acoustic strings, the 3 lower strings are acoustic-bronze and the 3 higher strings are electric. Wow sounds great; it even has a bit of that jangly sound. While I was changing the strings I decided to see if the bridge was shimmed and sure enough there was a plastic strip under the bridge. Removed that and now the action is great. So what I have is a great sounding, playing and looking acoustic guitar but a terrible guitar when amplified. My 40 year old Ovation that's been glued back together totally blows this out of the water when plugged in. I'm thinking of trying a noise gate or even replacing the pickup if it makes financial sense and doesn't alter the appearance of the guitar.

As has been mentioned, this guitar is perhaps 10% to expensive. People are paying for the John Lennon signature on the side, which personally I wish wasn't there. Any way, it's a nice looking and sounding guitar, it just fails when amplified.

What a great guitar for the money. It's got a full, rich sound. Easy to play. Beautiful clean lines and polish. Just a great price for such a sweet, quality guitar.

Humbucker is low in volume and buzzy

By Mike McLenison

from Arizona

Comments about Epiphone EJ-160E John Lennon Acoustic-Electric:

The pickup has a unique small design and cannot be swapped out with any other standard pickup without routing out the wood under the pickup plate. The pickup screws stick up about 2 inches above the coils. It think this is the reason for the noisey low volume.

That said, the guitar sounds and plays well acoustically with low action and no acoustic buzzing.

Not Up To Par For Signature Model

Pros

  • Too Much Hum
  • Tuners Are Stiff

Comments about Epiphone EJ-160E John Lennon Acoustic-Electric:

I expected better quality for a signature guitar.
I sent back the first one because the d string buzzed, and had loud hum into amp.
Got another...better but...volume and tone pots were loose, had to remove knob and tighten. Fit and finish are nice, however the g tuner is tight and intonation off. Still a lot of hum in my opinion into amp, but maybe that is because it is a single coil pickup, it is less hum on the second one I got, so it is "acceptable" but not ideal.

Other than that it is a nice guitar.

Comments about Epiphone EJ-160E John Lennon Acoustic-Electric:

Was hesitant on buying an Epiphone, Considerin I have almost Always played taks/Martins/or Seagull.. Coulden't Believe my Ears or Hands. This Guitar is perfect! No Flaws, better than Amazing Tone.. Antyone who is in the market to get an acoustic guitar should consider this one. You will not be unsatisfied at all. I am considering getting another for my studio setup and change strings up to get different 60-70 sounds. Also any Beatles Fan will be getting an almost identical sound in which MR.Lennion himself chose to use. Don't Hesitate just by one.. There great!Dont forget a Humidifier with this Guitar they are way to special to let anyone of em to crack or Dry out.. Case A must!

I Love This Guitar

By DAVID BRANIGAN

from Palos Park, Illinois

Comments about Epiphone EJ-160E John Lennon Acoustic-Electric:

I do some Everly Brothers songs in my act. This guitar is perfect. There were a few problems out of the box. The first one I ordered from GC did not work. No sound came out after trying several cable and amp combinations. They ordered a replacement. That one had a problem with the action. Any string played at the first fret buzzed. A quick truss rod adjustment by the tech at GC fixed that. The action is great. The subtle tone of this guitar is just what I was looking for. Not tinny at all even with the tone control on full. It requires a bit more volume from the amp then my non-acoustic electric guitars but that has not been a problem. I like the fact that the pickup is passive. It does not require a battery like the other Fender acoustic electric I had before this. Although it does not have the full range of controls the active pickup acoustic electric guitars normally have (high, midrange, low and brightness), the simplicity of a singe tone control has not been a factor since the mellow tone is just what I was looking for. It sounds the same when played without amplification as it does with. This has been a great addition to the other guitars I play.

A beautiful guitar to play

By Max201

Pros

  • Comfortable neck
  • Great quality
  • Great sound

Cons

    Best Uses

Comments about Epiphone EJ-160E John Lennon Acoustic-Electric:

Just holding this guitar is inspirational. I had the string action lowered by my technician--it was a little high for my liking, but I imagine Epiphone allows that wiggle room for those who may like it well enough with the factory settings. It is a very well made instrument and my technician noted how perfectly straight the neck is. And with me being a huge Beatles fan, I couldn't want any acoustic more or be happier than I am with this fantastic guitar. It is a dream to play and I love the sound--very familiar sound indeed.
