Overview

From Epiphone comes this beautiful entry-level guitar, priced for anyone to afford. Dressed in a beautiful finish, and featuring appointments you'd often find on higher-end guitars, the Epiphone AJ-220S guitar sounds just as good as it looks. Built on advanced jumbo body design, the depth of the body and the width of the shoulders create a large sound chamber, presenting tone that is full, deep, and loud.

The mahogany back and sides paired with a solid Sitka spruce top brings out rich harmonics, lots of projection, and clarity in tone. A glued-in dovetail neck joint keeps the Epiphone acoustic guitar's neck and body stable, without losing any subtleties in tone. The mahogany neck adds strength, as the wood is quite durable and will stand up to the elements. The rosewood bridge and fretboard produces lasting sustain, in a deep appearance.

Dressed in a polyurethane finish and featuring such desirable appointments as sealed die-cast tuners and nickel hardware, you will love the look of the Epiphone AJ-220S guitar as much as its sound. Built under the expertise of Epiphone's master craftsmen, this acoustic guitar will sound excellent for a very long time. And at this price, you can't go wrong.

This is the perfect guitar for beginners. Solid spruce top, mahogany sides and back. Delivers great sound for someone wanting to try guitar without spending too much money. I own a Epi AJ-200EVS (same family) and I wish they made these guys when I first started. Pretty much the same as any of the 200 family except this 220 has a satin finish on the neck. This is huge! Your hands slide with great ease up and down the neck. Satin finish=slide, poly finish= sticky, clammy hands. The tuners aren't grover, just grover look-a-likes. As you get better just upgrade your string contact points (bone pins, bone saddle and bone nut...maybe better tuners) and your guitar will rival anything less than 1,200 dollars. Of course each guitar does look and sound a bit different, but the general build of this guitar is an amazing deal. I now own a Gibson J-160e (huge beatles fan) and I can say that although the gibby does sound and play better, the 220S isn't that far behind once I upgraded a few things.

There was always a little buzz on the low E, and it took me awhile to realize that the 14th fret was dead all across. After about 6 months, the neck twisted to the point where it's completely unplayable. It's significant enough that you can easily see the twist from across the room. This guitar is a winner..and I DO mean a WINNER!

By ALAN

from Allentown, Pa

I Cherry picked this AJ220S acoustic at my local GC in Whitehall Pennsylvania. And at $199 I had to rub my eyes and scratch my head at the tone and quality this guitar had, even with the corroded set of strings that came on it. I know good tone when I hear it..and I could hear the clear, even tone through the bad strings, so that would be an easy fix. Took it home, put Elixir nanoweb 80/20 lights on her...Wow...this is no AJ220S...this is a Gibson J-45. It is so fun to play, such good action, perfect flawless finish. I finally have my J-45. ...Ok so it's not a J-45...but it is as close as it gets to a J-45. Don't pass it up. You'll regret it if you do! This guitar is amazing and it will not last. Get it today! Play it for years.

Great Sound, Great Price, DONT DROP IT

By michael warren

from Tupelo, MS

I had this guitar for around a year and a half. I bought it online. Before I ordered it I drove to a Guitar Center and played several in the same price range. This was hands down the best guitar for the money. I compared it to several that cost 300-500 dollars more and there was not enough difference to warrant spending the extra cash. This guitar is amazing. The action was perfect, not too high, not too low, and all this guitar needs is a new set of strings (which any new guitar needs) and it is ready to play. I have friends with Taylors and Martins and they were amazed at the sound this guitar produced. Sadly, my dog knocked the guitar over a week ago and the neck broke just north of the nut. This is the first guitar I have lost to damage in over 15 years of playing. In short, great sound, great looks, great price, but don't drop it! It will not survive a fall.

IM IN LOVE!!!!!!!

By jewfresus

from colorado springs, colorado

I won this guitar in a drawing a little less than a year ago. since then, i have found little use for the acoustic i had beforehand, as well as my eletric. it is a dream to play, and it sounds better than ANY guitar i have ever played (excluding of course brands like ovation and such). It has a full tone that is versicle and powerful. i am buying a magnetic pickup soon to allow me to plug this in. i may not use my eletric at ALL then. you cannot find a guitar that will please and enspire you more than this guy without entering the 1000 dollar range, and best of all, it is within reach for beginners. one problem, get good at changeing srtings. they break. alot. ive talked to the local acoustic officianato, and he confermed that it is unavoidable.

VERY IMPRESSIVE

By Scott

from Lebanon, PA

I bought this guitar 2 months ago at GC and I'm amazed at the quality vs the price. The fit and finish are excellent. The body has beautiful binding and the sunburst finish is flawless. The neck is satin and super slick, and the fret edges are very smooth. Even the bridge pins fit perfectly. The action is low out of the box with no fret buzz and it needs no further adjustment. And I can't get over the tone quality. Very punchy with deep rich bass and lots of volume and sustain. I'm very pleased with this guitar and would recommend it to beginners as well as advanced players. In addition, I received excellent service and assistance from the GC employee. Epiphone had a winner here.

Awesome sound

By chris

from Seattle

I am a beginner guitar player - however, I did play saxaphone for roughly 12 years so I know a bit about how music and intruments should sound. I have a few friends who also play acoustic guitar and have been for a couple of years and the sound from this guitar blows theirs right out of the water. If you are only going to spend 200 or so dollars consider this guitar. Also, the action is not too high like many of my friends who have similairly priced guitars. And it has a solid top which is what possibly makes the big difference in sound (fullness) and projection. Virtually everyone I play guitar with who has heard and played this guitar says "I'm upgrading my guitar." I believe most of them have the lamenent top guitars. Special thanks to the guy at guitar center who saw me with the Yamaha FG700 in my hand and steered me to this guitar instead....I am in your debt.

Love at first play

By Russ

from Arlington, Va

I was looking for a back up guitar for alt tunings, and thought I'd try a AJ 220. I couldn't (and can't) stop playing this guitar. It has a very warm, rich sound, a comfortable action, and alot of volume. This isn't a collectors guitar, there are flaws in the detailing (mostly plastic; Pick guard and Truss guard), but if your looking for a great playing, great sounding guitar at an amazing price...

Examine thoroughly!!!!!!

By Scott

from Madison Wisconsin

Got this as a gift for X-mas this year after playing one at GC and loving it.Fiancee' went back, picked one up,got it home and I started playing it and it sounded awesome, played beautifully...until I got up to the 12th fret..ON EVERY STRING it "fretted out",if pressing the fret, the string will hit another fret and pretty much make that same note all the way until you pass the bad fret. This is incredibly annoying because no matter how high you adjust the truss rod at the top of the neck,it will not compensate for the higher frets, this is simply bad quality coming out of the inspection proccess. Could be Epiphone rushed for christmas, and this is an otherwise fine guitar.I own a Epi les paul thats made in China.Phenomonal guitar. These acoustics are made in indonesia...not the same attention to detail. Anyway, dont walk past it...just look it over very well,or ask the site to go look at it in the warehouse for "fretting out".Turned out Guitar Center had the same problem all week, and pulled the remaining from the shelves because they all did it.They were great at helping us find another guitar...they had a team of people examining several with a fine toothed comb.Ended up picking up an F series Yamaha for the same price, which were all flawless by the way.Very fine instruments for the price. Anyway just ask questions, and if at all possible, play it first.
