Overview

From Epiphone comes this beautiful entry-level guitar, priced for anyone to afford. Dressed in a beautiful finish, and featuring appointments you'd often find on higher-end guitars, the Epiphone AJ-220S guitar sounds just as good as it looks. Built on advanced jumbo body design, the depth of the body and the width of the shoulders create a large sound chamber, presenting tone that is full, deep, and loud.

The mahogany back and sides paired with a solid Sitka spruce top brings out rich harmonics, lots of projection, and clarity in tone. A glued-in dovetail neck joint keeps the Epiphone acoustic guitar's neck and body stable, without losing any subtleties in tone. The mahogany neck adds strength, as the wood is quite durable and will stand up to the elements. The rosewood bridge and fretboard produces lasting sustain, in a deep appearance.

Dressed in a polyurethane finish and featuring such desirable appointments as sealed die-cast tuners and nickel hardware, you will love the look of the Epiphone AJ-220S guitar as much as its sound. Built under the expertise of Epiphone's master craftsmen, this acoustic guitar will sound excellent for a very long time. And at this price, you can't go wrong.

This is the perfect guitar for beginners. Solid spruce top, mahogany sides and back. Delivers great sound for someone wanting to try guitar without spending too much money. I own a Epi AJ-200EVS (same family) and I wish they made these guys when I first started. Pretty much the same as any of the 200 family except this 220 has a satin finish on the neck. This is huge! Your hands slide with great ease up and down the neck. Satin finish=slide, poly finish= sticky, clammy hands. The tuners aren't grover, just grover look-a-likes. As you get better just upgrade your string contact points (bone pins, bone saddle and bone nut...maybe better tuners) and your guitar will rival anything less than 1,200 dollars. Of course each guitar does look and sound a bit different, but the general build of this guitar is an amazing deal. I now own a Gibson J-160e (huge beatles fan) and I can say that although the gibby does sound and play better, the 220S isn't that far behind once I upgraded a few things.

This is the second Epiphone AJ-220s I've purchased from Musician's Friend. I kept the first one even though it had a rattle you could hear near the headstock. It was the truss rod, and it was engaged. I foolishly kept that one instead of returning it. I sold it at a loss.

The 2nd AJ-220s I just purchased was horrible. Fret buzz all up and down the neck. I checked the truss rod and it wasn't even engaged. And the solid wood top was of the lowest quality. Needless to say this one's going back to MF.

Hopefully the third one will be the charm. Epiphone does make good guitars, especially for the money. But I'd be very hesitant to recommend this model. I'm glad Musician's Friend has a good return policy. You just might need it.

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

I just started guitar (most recent attempt) 6 months ago. I had an Ovation that I got used, but I wanted a new guitar for my new attempt. In my research, Epiphone consistently rated among the top in the bang for the buck category. I was drawn to this model because I wanted a sunburst finish and reasonable quality - at least the top had to be solid wood, and I really wanted electronics - but my budget didn't allow for that.

When I got the guitar, I really liked it. The action was set up pretty well out of the box, but as I got more comfortable I sanded down the saddle a bit and got the action right where my beginner's fingers need it, with no buzzing at all. It sounds good, it stays in tune, and it looks good. I have noticed no things on the guitar that make me feel like it's a low quality instrument, or that I cheaped out. The rosette is kind of plain (and honestly they could have probably left it out), but that's about it. The neck is a good size for me and the guitar as a whole makes me WANT to play it. The Ovation I had, the neck was too narrow and it constantly slid off my lap. This guitar is a beginner's dream. I really like that the guitar has an artificial bone nut and saddle. The Ovation had a plastic nut and saddle, and the difference is noticeable in the guitar's sustain, staying in tune, and not binding when tuning. Hopefully the harder material will help these parts last longer as well.

The only negative, and thing I wish I had increased my budget for are the lack of electronics. I know I can add a pickup later on, but the good ones are more expensive than I originally expected them to be. I will likely keep this guitar until my skills improve enough to justify a "better" guitar, and even then I won't get rid of this one.

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

Some day I will own a Gibson Advanced Jumbo. For now, while I'm learning notes and chords, I don't need to beat up a $3,000 piece of art. The Epiphone AJ220S is an absolute joy to play. Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star never sounded so good. I did a lot of research and a lot of trying out before I settled on this guitar. It feels right. I love the neck. The set up right out of the box was perfect. The guitar sounds great. The jumbo shape makes this thing ring clear and loud.

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

This guitar was purchased at G.C. for my personal use.
The finish is a gloss body and a satin neck. My guitar's finish is flawless and rich. The binding and fretwork is very good. The internet photo doesn't do it justice.
The tuner action is smooth and consistent. They hold tight. The truss rod is adjustable both directions at the headstock. My guitar came set up well.
The AJ has two strap buttons. And all the hardware, and pickgaurd are secure and solid.
The tone is well balanced to my tastes with the bass notes not drowning out the treble. Tone is very subjective but I find it enjoyàble to listen to. And play. I like the stock strings.
If you like the feel and tone I would recommend checking out one from the box. A floor model may leave a little to be desired.

Cannot even hear the strings as they touch the frets and are muted. Have to spend more money now at a guitar shop to repair it as the warranty doesn't cover truss rod adjustments.

Very good buy for the price. Excellent tone and playability. Nice comfortable neck, well made. Only hiccup was that I ordered a Natural finish and received a Sunburst, but I liked it so well that I kept it. All in all, a very good deal.

Comments about Epiphone AJ-220S Acoustic Guitar:

I've had this guitar for half a year now and it seems like reasonable amount of time to write a review. This guitar is great for the price it produces a very loud and clear sound. I went to my local Guitar Center and I played almost all the solid body guitars that they had for the price(200$) and to me this was the best overall considering sound and playability. The only thing is though that I did have to return the first Aj-220s that i got because it had to dead frets on the low E so i would suggest thoroughly examining this guitar when you get home.
