Comments about Epiphone 1984 Explorer EX Electric Guitar:

    Buy it, dude.

I had wanted an Explorer for more than fifteen years, but I could never commit to the price of a Gibson and was always turned off at those harsh-looking "pointy" models offered by ESP (at least to the American public). So, I gave up...until I found the Epiphone '84.

If you're looking into this guitar, I imagine you're a metal guitarist (more specifically, a Metallica fan...and even more specifically, a James Hetfield fan). If this is the case, stop reading and buy the guitar.

This guitar sounds PERFECT for the kind of music it's designed for: metal. The active EMG's are SCORCHING. This guitar has insane tone (don't be turned off because it's an Epiphone rather than a Gibson. It sounds better than my Gibson Les Paul for anything requiring distortion). The neck is fast, fun, and has a really solid connection with the body. Definitely not a cheap bolt-on feel. I haven't had any problems keeping it in tune. It sounds tight and loud unplugged (like when you're just walking around the house playing). It sounds super heavy, but clear through an amp with distortion.

Given the pickups, the guitar lacks when it comes to playing anything clean. The absence of a second volume knob gives it even less versatility when it comes to clean tones (or anything on your neck pickup, for that matter). I'm not sure why Epiphone went with one volume knob since the '84 Gibsons had two. I know James' later ESP Explorers and new Snakebytes only have one volume knob, so that might be the reason. In my opinion, it's the only flaw with the guitar.

The guitar's a lot of fun. It's impossible to put down. It's got such a beautiful shape. When I walk by it, I check it out. When I'm at work, I'm wishing I was playing it. I own a lot of guitars and none of them have had the hold on me that this one does. Just order the guitar already.

Oh, and you'll absolutely need strap locks, too. Buy them now.
