  • A lot of metal for the money!

As reviewed by Dusty on 5/15/2008

I'm a beginner guitarist, my two guitars before this were inexpensive Ibanez'. Metal is by far my favorite music to play, so I was looking for something in an SG, I love EMG pick ups, and they don't look much cooler than this one. This is a lot of guitar for the money. I love playing Black Sabbath songs on this thing! Finger tapping does not work all that well, but since I lowered the action(just turn two screws), and put some lighter gauge strings on it(9's), it's a bit better. That did introduce some fret buzz, but nothing that manifests in the amp. The tone is just incredible, can do very heavy Black Sabbath and Metallica, to some light Steve Vai. Coming from guitars with basswood bodies, to me this thing has excellent sustain. This thing is worth easily 3 times what their asking, and it will be my axe of choice for some time to come. Tremelo would be nice, but as a beginner I have little use for it anyway.

  • $599? You're kidding, right?

As reviewed by Ryan A. on 7/5/2010

Pinch me. I must be dreaming. Not only is this a kick-ass guitar with dark looks and even darker tone, but it's not highway robbery to purchase it. In my opinion, this SG is much better than the slightly pricier Prophecy SG EX. I would purchase this over a real Gibson any day, because for the price, it's a hell of a buy. You've got everything to love about SGs (devilish looks, excellent playability, lighter than a Les Paul)with screaming pickups. The perfect metal guitar from Epiphone. But if you're gonna get this bad boy, I'd recommend using a hi-gain amp to push the pickups to their fullest potential (even though they work well on the clean channel, too). They mean serious business.
