I was pleasantly surprised at how good this banjo looked and sounded. From researching it, I knew I would already like it, but when I saw it in person it was even better. This is my first banjo (other than a very cheap one I had before), but I've been play bass and Guitar for 7 years so I know if an instrument is well made. Obviously this is not the best banjo. There are very small things that are not perfect, but are virtually unnoticeable. For the price of this banjo, you get a lot more than you pay for!
I was surprised at the overall quality and aesthetics of this instrument. It sounds great and looks great. No other model comes near in price versus quality and value. The rich detail and craftsmanship of the pearloid inlay was a pleasant surprise. The tone (with a new set of quality strings) is as good as instruments costing many times as much. One of the nice aesthetic features that we never see on the Epiphone web site or in on-line catalogs is the golden eagle image that is decoupaged onto the resonator (back).
This is a great banjo, well worth your money. As this was my first banjo I didn't really know what to expect, but it blew me away. Great tone and easy playability made it a snap to pick up and jam, and my background as a guitarist also helped. This is a beautiful instrument, the pictures do not do it justice. Everyone I show it to comments on how great it looks. The only downside is its kind of a pain to tune, and isn't rock solid in holding a tune. This isn't really a problem though as I am used to tuning often and am kind of OCD about it. Overall an excellent starter banjo you will not be disappointed with, and for the price pick up a hardshell case while you're at it.
