Epiphone Limited Edition Wilshire Pro Electric Guitar (H82688)
Availability:

A cool-looking solidbody with upgraded pickups and electronics.

In 1957 Gibson purchased New York’s Epiphone Guitar Company and moved production to Kalamazoo, Michigan. With plans to expand retail distribution by differentiating Epiphone dealers from Gibson dealers, Gibson began production of a new line of “Kalamazoo-made and designed” Epiphones in 1959. For over a decade, Epiphone solid body guitars and basses were produced right alongside Gibsons. These Epiphone guitars represented some of the highest quality and best sounding instruments of their generation. They provided unique shapes, pickup arrangements, and tonal signatures not seen on comparable Gibson models of the day. Under appreciated at the time of their release, numerous artists through the years have recognized the unique appeal of these guitars. Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter, Paul Gilbert and Steve Marriot are but a few of the artists that have embraced the tone and build quality of these Kalamazoo built Epiphones. One such Epiphone instrument was the Wilshire.

Like an SG guitar, the Wilshire’s double cutaway mahogany body with a glued-in mahogany neck that joins the body at the 22nd fret gives you ultimate upper fret access. Lightweight and comfortable, the Wilshire has excellent resonance and natural acoustic tone – even unplugged. Featuring Epiphone’s LockTone™ tune-o-matic/stopbar combination, the transfer of string vibration is improved even more giving this guitar excellent sustain and clarity. Case sold separately.

PRO Electronics
Utilizing Epiphone's 4-wire humbuckers, each volume control is a push/pull potentiometer that allows you to coil-tap each pickup seperately for more twangy "single-coil" sound and a wide range of different tonal combinations.

While 1960's early Wilshires were fitted with Epiphone's own mini-humbuckers, the new Wilshire PRO harkens back to Wilshires made in the 1970's and features full size humbuckers. The neck pickup is Epiphone's Alnico Classic that provides warm and subtle tone with a full, even response that doesn't hold back when you need that classic humbucker crunch. An Alnico Classic Plus, which is the perfect companion to the Classic, is overwound for a slighter higher output without sacrificing its rich, vintage tone. Both feature Alnico-II magnets, enamel wire and are double vacuum waxed.

Retro Looks
Also unique, the Wilshire features Epiphone’s own “batwing” headstock. A classic design that improves tuning ease and accuracy by offering a straight string-pull design, the headstock is adorned like the original with the vintage “Epiphone” logo in gold. Other features include a 1960’s SlimTaper™ neck profile with rosewood fingerboard, premium 14:1 die-cast tuners and individual Volume and Tone controls for each pickup.

  • Fun guitar!

As reviewed by Danny on 8/3/2014

Many reviews praise the Wilshire highly and I wanted to see for myself if it was hype or legit; I?ve never owned one. The TV Sliver Wilshire Pro is extremely light-weight. It is definitely worth its weight and then some. It is also easy to move around with and easy to play. Being light-weight and budget friendly, my expectations were not too high. I was blown away by the sound. The coil-tapping allows the humbuckers to be in single-coil mode either in the bridge or neck pickup or both. The Alnico Classic PROs are impressive. According to the specs on Epiphone?s site, they are PRO not Plus. It has a full sound that is clear. It is not muddy yet it remains mellow. This Wilshire can be used for any type of music. It can have an indie rock to classic rock sound depending on the settings. Another cool feature is the neck. It has a baseball bat feel and the double-cutaway leaves the upper frets open for easy access. It?s a little too easy when it?s completely exposed. As far as the looks, the whole guitar has a high gloss finish with silver see-through staining. It looks very retro and vintage for people who are into those types of things. This is a lot of guitar for a little money. Being that said, I wouldn?t underestimate its ability due to price. It is definitely a guitar to have in your collection. It does need a good setup but the good part is that the action can be super low without buzzing because of its design. The Wilshire fits in standard rectangle case or triangle gig bag if you plan to travel. I am delighted with this guitar.

  • What a surprise!

As reviewed by 1327510 on 4/8/2013

I ordered the Limited Edition Wilshire Pro because I've always loved the old bat wing Epi's and liked the looks of this one. Plus the price was certainly right. My expectations were not really that much for an import Epiphone, but I was pleasantly surprised. The finish on the guitar is gorgeous. The best I can describe it is sort of a TV silver... Like TV yellow with the grain filler in the mahogany showing through, only silver. The finish was pretty much flawless, and much better than I had expected. The real surprise was when I played it. I didn't even tune the stock strings up, and instead immediately restrung it with a set of Earnie Ball Cobalts (which I HIGHLY recommend). The action was more or less right on the money. I did a very small bridge adjustment, but that was it. It played like a dream. Really more of a chunky neck than I had expected, but very comfortable just the same. The pickups were nice, with a more vintage sound, with lower output than some of the hotter humbuckers that are being used these days. The coil splits even sounded good, which is usually not the case, especially with less expensive pickups. Over all I am very pleased with this guitar. For the price you just can't beat it! I own over 50 guitars, so I know quality and value when I see it, and this is all of that. It would be prefect for an advanced beginner or intermediate player. It would even serve a professional player as an alternative axe or backup as well. Worth every penny, so I would get one quick before they decide to raise the price on this excellent instrument.
