The 3-pickup crown of all semi-hollowbodies.

The Epiphone Riviera Custom P93 Black Royale is modeled after one of Epiphone’s most enduring classics, the Riviera. Introduced in the early 60’s, the Epiphone Riviera’s semi-hollow design has been a favorite of players from all genres and generations including blues great Otis Rush, Lou Reed of the Velvet Underground, and The Strokes’ Nick Valensi, who all found the Riviera’s legendary ES-body shape could produce great tones with any pickup variation. Over the years, the Riviera has been seen with humbuckers, mini-humbuckers, and P90’s. But now the Custom P93 Royale has the rare distinction of giving players a new sound and a new, distinctive look.

The Riviera Custom P93 Royale uses not two but three Epiphone Dogear Classic pickups for a punch that leaves all other three single coil pickup guitars in the dust. And when matched with the bell-like tones of the ES-style body plus a stunning Black Pearl finish and a Bigsby B70 tremolo, the P93 Royale becomes one of our era’s great instruments and perhaps the most striking of the Royale family.

Semi-hollow Design, Solid Craftsmanship
The Riviera Custom P93 Black Royale is constructed of premium laminated maple with a mahogany center block and a hand-fitted, glued-in mahogany 24.75” scale neck with a SlimTaper™ “C” profile and 22 medium jumbo frets with a 1.68” nut for great string spacing and intonation. Other details include a rosewood fingerboard with pearloid Parallelogram Inlays.

Ground Breaking Electronics
The Riviera Custom P93’s fabulous semi-hollowbody sound is voiced by three Epiphone Dogear classic P90 pickups with Alnico™ V magnets. Controls include 3 Volumes and 1 Master Tone. The all-metal toggle works as it would with a 2-pickup guitar with the rhythm position activating the neck pickup and the lead toggle position activating the bridge pickup. The middle pickup can be used in any position by adjusting its volume control.

Quality electronic parts include full-size, 1” 500K Ohm potentiometers, Epiphone's all-metal pickup selector switch, ‘60s era Epiphone logo on the headstock, and a heavy-duty output jack.

Epiphone Hardware
The Riviera Custom P93 Royale’s black pearl finish and binding are complimented by a one-of-a-kind Epiphone pickguard. The Riviera Custom’s hardware includes premium 14:1 ratio Wilkinson® machine heads which provide superior tuning stability and accuracy. Also included as standard equipment on the Epiphone Riviera Custom P93 is Epiphone’s exclusive LockTone™ locking Tune-o-matic bridge plus a legendary Bigsby B70 tremolo.

  • Love it

Had to track mine down last year. I was looking for the white one with gold trim (a color in which has been discontinued). Finally found her in a Guitar Center in Washington. They were great people to deal with and they shipped it to me rite away. Much to my surprised when I opened the box and found it was in a TKL case. As stated in the last review this guitar should not be overlooked, But sadly is. I find that with the rite amp it almost has that Gretsch tang to it. The P90's have a great kick. The guitar will absolutely need a pro set-up to go without would be an in-justice to the guitar, its amazing the difference it makes. I like a really low action and with the P90's that are there you can only go so low without routing them deeper into the body. But with the rite strings its a lot of fun to play. This Axe great for all genres. She will always have mine in my collection.

  • Nice Looking, but Poor Craftsmanship

As reviewed by Little on 8/4/2014

I bought this guitar thinking it would be a good guitar for my son to use in his school's jazz band and for me to learn on. While it has some nice features, overall, I am disappointed with the poor quality and poor craftsmanship. I had never bought a new guitar before and I regret having bought this one and wish I had spent a few hundred dollars more on a used better quality guitar. On the positive side, this guitar is beautiful. The finish and inlays are real nice. This guitar also has great tone, which is why I didn't tag it with a two star rating. I tried a lot of guitars in this price range at Guitar Center, and I believe having the third pick up gives the tone a smoother sound than other new guitars in this price range. Unfortunately, the negatives far outweigh the positives. The guitar did not come play ready out of the box, so I took it to a local and very well regarded luthier. He told me the guitar had uneven frets and he would only be able to do so much with the set-up. I probably should have returned the guitar, but I missed the 30 day GC satisfaction guarantee cut off. As a result, the intonation of the guitar is okay, but not great (not anywhere near as good as my other guitars). Another problem is that the guitar's pickups are not set low enough into the body of the guitar. They stick out and I keep hitting them with my pick. I guess I could pay to have them lowered, but I'm not inclined to invest more money in this guitar. The guitar's output jack also has a tendency to come loose. I have had to tighten it a couple of times. I read other reviews about this guitar where people did not catch the problem in time, the nut came off and the jack fell into the body of the guitar. Also, one of tone control nobs on the guitar has come loose. I can't figure out how to tighten it, so I will have to take it to the luthier to fix. Lastly, Epiphone's documentation did not include instructions for this model and their customer service is of little to no help. I sent an email to Epiphone asking about the different tone and volume controls. It took them a while to respond and I didn't understand the response when I got it. In summary, the guitar is nice looking and sounds good, but has poor craftsmanship and was built with poor quality components. If I could do it all over again, I would not buy this guitar. I guess you get what you pay for.

  • great guitar

As reviewed by Douglas Funk on 10/25/2013

Bought one back in the summer. Pearl Black. I play lead guitar in our church praise band. The sound is as good as the looks. Very under estimated guitar. I changed the strings to a Ernie Ball heavy bottom set, and had a setup done because I bought it, left and used it. Did not wait for Music Center to it setup. It was ok, but I wanted a faster action. Again, don't overlook this guitar. If your looking for that Gibson 335 sound without paying 3-4 times the cost. This is the guitar.
