Beauty is skin deep

I got this guitar mail ordered from another outlet, and bought it because I have always wanted a Gibson J-45 but didn't want to pay the price. This Epi AJ-45 (vintage sunburst) is a beauty to behold. Workmanship is above average. Unfortunately the string action is high even with my tech adjusting the truss rod. There is a buzz at the 2nd & 3rd frets which prohibits lowering the strings to my preference. While the balance between the bass and treble is good, the sustain in the bass is a bit disappointing. Finger-style and flat picking this guitar results in a good, bright, cutting sound in the treble strings. Strumming results in a rather muddy and almost abrasive sound. If you are a finger-style player and don't mind high action, this is probably a reasonalby good purchase for you. It is not a Gibson however.

Fine instrument at any price

I have the Vintage Sunburst model. Excellent instrument. I set it up myself. Action is perfect and tone is everything I was hoping it would be. I've owned several Martins and Gibson Advanced Jumbos over the years (Their resale value makes them susceptible to being sold to pay rent) and this guitar compares to any of them without qualification.
