Product Information

A hybrid Les Paul that also goes acoustic.

The Les Paul Ultra-II is a truly different hybrid guitar combining a real Les Paul Guitar with a fingerboard-mounted NanoMAG Samarium/Cobalt pickup and electronics to produce shimmering acoustic tones with ultra-wide dynamic range. It is crafted with the same acoustic chambers as those in the regular Les Paul Ultra. Comprehensive NanoMAG controls are discretely incorporated into the back cover. True Stereo outputs capable of both mono and stereo with a regular cable.

The NanoMAG is a magnetic pickup with an air coil and a composition of different samarium cobalt magnets incorporating active electronics in a minimum of space. The pickup is protected by an epoxy layer, and the silver-platinum shielding, together with the active electronics, provides a low impedance, hum free output signal. The NanoMAG pickup provides an acoustic sound, but can also produce sweet blues and jazz tones. It is very resistant to the feedback and offers incredible dynamics in all positions.

Based upon Epiphone's top-selling Les Paul Ultra, the Ultra-II adds a proprietary NanoMAG low-impedance pickup embedded into the fingerboard and custom electronics to create a Les Paul that is not only capable of blistering, electric guitar riffs but also shimmering acoustic-like tones and when combined, greatly expanded frequency range and tonal capabilities. The goal of the Ultra-II was to create a more versatile guitar that was capable of not only real Les Paul tone, but also acoustic-like qualities but without adding a lot of controls and changing the overall appearance of the legendary Les Paul. Unlike other instruments that attempt to create a completely new guitar design, Epiphone went about this differently by starting with a proven, electric guitar design and adding to it.

The Ultra-II is all Les Paul. Its pair of Alnico Classic humbucking pickups combined with traditional LP design let's you rock like legendary Les Paul players. However, the Ultra's body is strategically chambered to not only reduce the weight, but to add subtle acoustic overtones. Taking advantage of this design, Epiphone teamed up with the premier German acoustic pickup maker, Shadow to take the Ultra to the next level. The result is the Ultra-II.

At the heart of the Ultra-II is the NanoMAG pickup. Referring to its small size and its composition, the NanoMag is a completely new kind of magnetic pickup that combines 3 Samarium-Cobalt magnets with on-board, active electronics to produce a low-impedance pickup with absolute linear response and an uncharacteristically wide frequency range. Voiced specifically for the Ultra-II, the NanoMAG is embedded in the fingerboard after the 22nd fret. Positioned at this harmonic-rich sweet spot, the NanoMAG is able to capture all the harmonics - from the lowest to the highest - with incredible accuracy and all with ZERO noise or artificial coloration. This again is different from all other acoustic pickup technology.

Front mounted controls for the Ultra-II remain in the standard LP locations. However, function is changed to Neck Volume (magnetic), Bridge Volume (magnetic), Master Tone and NanoMAG volume. Controls specifically for the NanoMAG, as well as the 9-volt battery compartment are discretely mounted on the back of the instrument on the control cavity plate. Using the back controls, you can set the treble, bass and gain of the NanoMAG. Once you find the settings you want, you generally won't make many changes to them. However, the control is there if you need it.

The Ultra-II also adds true stereo outputs that allow you to either combine its Alnico Classic humbuckers with the NanoMAG output or, separate the two for mixing possibilities. Both options allow the use of standard 1/4" instrument cables. With this, the player can route the magnetic pickups to a standard electric guitar amplifier and the NanoMAG to an acoustic guitar amp or the PA. Using the front mounted volume controls, unlimited blending and mixing of the two signals is possible.

If you want a versatile, professional instrument that's capable of both Les Paul crunch and real acoustic-like tones, the Epiphone Ultra-II is it!

Ultra 2

WOW the one thing I found wrong ( I Looked hard) is that there is no switch between the Nanomag & standard pickups..BUT with a true bypass loop switch That I made & can switch between in's outs or a combo of the two. the one I played was a bud of mines & Now I gotta have one.. Just wish I coud get a Push push switch on the guitar that would do what I'd like I give it 9.5 out of 10 only because of the above ..

Classic Les Paul sound with the technology of the future.

All I have to say is wow. It looked very appealing from the Epiphone site, after that I had to get one. When I finally did, it immediately became my favorite guitar. The satin finish on the back of the neck is one of my favorite features because the smoothness of the finish helps you get around the neck very very well. The Nanomag sounds amazing when you have it on a clean channel, although I much prefer the Alnico's over the nanomag when it comes to distortion. The only thing I found that I didn't like was that the selector switch was a tad loose when I got it, but that is easily fixed. The bridge was a little high for my taste at first as well. The finish is beautiful, and it has that classic Les Paul sound, but has new features that open up a whole new realm of diversity. I highly recommend this guitar!

Great mid-range guitar

Great guitar for the price! The action on the neck is smooth and fast. The guitar is pretty. I ordered the Midnight ebony and the combination of black/smoke with the gold accents is absolutely beautiful. The tone is fantastic and the settings combinations you can make between the three pickups is extremely rich and robust. The only thing that keeps me from giving this a 5 out of 5 are some of the minor flaws in manufacturing. The line outs have a plastic fitting, that would have been better if it was crome or even a gold metal to match the pickups and tuning pegs. There are minor imperfections along the fret board. One of the line inputs was too tight so I had to open the back and adjust it so that the chord would slide in a bit easier. All in all though, these are minor things that are common on all guitars in this price range. A master volume would have been nice as well. I have no regrets in picking this guitar as I am not at a level to justify paying thousands for a custom Gibson. On a plus, I love the semi hollow body as it is extremely light and comfortable to play. Epiphone has made a great product and I fully recommend the guitar if you want something that sounds robust, especially if you play blues or jazz as the neck is easy to work around and the sound is crisp and clear.

Revolutionary product

The tones you can get out of this guitar are great. Good sustain and distorted tone for most rock genres but not shred metal. Looks just like a Gibson LP but is lighter and sounds just about the same with a little more color. I've noticed that you can get Strat like tones if you blend the Nanomag and Humbuckers. They should go ahead and add a toggle switch to isolate the Nanomag and the humbuckers though. You have to turn the nanomag volume down to get the true humbucker sound and vice versa. But don't let this stop you from taking a look at this guitar. If you need versatility this is the guitar for you.

Lives up to the legend.

I've had Epiphone guitars since the beginning in the 60s, and they've never let me down. I recently ordered two new epi electrics; a G-1275 that I've always wanted, and the Ultra II. I decided on the ultra II after seeing a demonstration of it's performance of some wicked lead, and some extreemly smooth acoustic sounds. What??!! Acoustic sound through a wired Epi??!! Yes, and it sounded wonderful. Since it arrived, I have a very difficult time putting it down. I think I love this fiddle more than the double-neck that came at the same time. The action is low and after playing some crummy acoustics that needed some neck work done, it's nice for a change. I highly recommend this model for anyone who wants kicking lead action along with some gentle acoustics. 5stars!!!

Unsurpassed range, terrific tone!

Wow! Incredible flat, fast, satin neck, Les Paul tone, light weight, sculpted contours, beautiful finish, terrific quality, and, the best part, the awesome Nanomag acoustic tone pick up. I love this guitar- I can switch from light acoustic tunes to full on distorted Les Paul rage in an instant, and it sounds terrific in both territories! Incredible range of tones available- mindboggling!

Awesome guitar

Before the Ultra I had to swap two guitars around as the music we play I went back and forth between electric and acoustic depending on the song. Now I can switch with the turn of the dial when running on two amps. The nanomag sounds better than my Yamaha acoustic did plugged in and of course there's no denying the awesome LesPaul sound. Great guitar

Awesome ultra 2

This is a beautiful instrument to begin with. It gives you that fat les paul sound and also gives you a crisp acoustic sound. Best of all, it weighs a lot less than a Gibson LP. I love it!!!!
