The legendary jazzbox at a revolutionary price.

Epiphone is proud to present the Epiphone ES-175 Premium, a faithful new reissue of what many consider the most famous electric archtop in popular music, heard on classics from jazz to rock in the hands of pioneers like Joe Pass, Scotty Moore, and Wes Montgomery. Epiphone’s long history of innovation began with designing archtop guitars. And now, Epiphone steps up its game again with the new ES-175 Premium featuring Gibson USA '57 Classic pickups and a vintage-inspired "aged" lacquer finish that will make you think you're playing a 50's original but at a price anyone can afford.

The Roots of A Legend
The ES-175 was introduced in 1949 as a mid-size, more affordable version of the venerable L-5, the very first modern archtop and the inspiration for the best Gibson and Epiphone archtops of the jazz era. The original ES-175 was truly a modern guitar that anticipated a new era of jazz and pop music that was hotter, louder, and constantly stretching musical boundaries. The ES-175 was the first archtop with a Florentine (sharp) cutaway. And by 1957, it came with the innovative and now standard humbucker pickup. The ES-175 quickly the preferred model for both jazz players and rock and rollers with a background in jazz, especially for guitarists looking for the “Wes Montgomery” L-5 sound at a lower cost.

The new Epiphone ES-175 Premium is just like the original--a fully hollow jazz box that’s easy to hold, easy to play and affordable. And with the addition of Gibson ’57 Classic pickups, the Epiphone ES-175 Premium is versatile enough for any genre with cool crisp archtop tone from its all-maple construction and killer humbucker pickups.

Epiphone Archtops, the Modern Standard

The introduction of the ES-175 Premium brings Epiphone full circle in its long history of producing affordable, professional instruments that can deliver pro sound night after night. The Epiphone ES-175 Premium features a traditional laminated Maple body with single ply binding with a vintage-inspired “aged” lacquer finish topped off with a traditional 3-ply black and white pickguard.

The ES-175 Premium has a hand-fitted, glued-in mahogany neck with a SlimTaperTM profile and a 24.75” scale that’s poised to come alive with the very first note you play. The bound rosewood fingerboard has classic split-parallelogram inlays and Epiphone’s iconic “sloped dovewing” headstock is fitted with Grover 18:1 machine heads for quick, accurate, and intuitive tuning, and a standard 1.68” nut.

Gibson USA ’57 Classic Pickups

Every great electric archtop has great pickups and the ES-175 Premium truly becomes a time-traveling marvel with the inclusion of two Gibson USA ‘57 Classic humbucker pickups that recreate the wide tonal range and incredible sensitivity of the ES-175’s original PAF-style pickups that today are the most sought after vintage pickups in the world.

Classic Hardware

All Epiphone instruments feature rock solid hardware that’s guaranteed for life. The ES-175 Premium comes with Epiphone "Deluxe" machine heads and full range controls for volume and tone all equipped with Epiphone’s full-size 1” 500K? potentiometers, a rim-mounted output jack, and Epiphone’s 3-way all metal toggle mounted on a traditional rubber grommet. The bridge is set up with a traditional floating rosewood base supporting a fully adjustable nickel Tune-o-matic bridge. The bridge is "pinned" to ensure perfect placement and intonation every time. And the classic "Zig-Zag" Trapeze tailpiece makes the new ES-175 Premium virtually indistinguishable from a vintage original—except for the price! An optional premium hard case is also available.

Limited Lifetime Warranty

  • Epi Premium 175 is a fine beast

As reviewed by Jeffrey on 8/12/2014

I have a number of guitars, mostly hollow bodies, many of them vintage. I popped into the GC in West LA and saw an Ebony and a natural Epiphone Premium ES 175 on the wall and immediately took down the Ebony one and fired it up into a late model Deluxe Reverb. The sound is exactly what you look for in a PAF equipped 175: sparkly, chimey yet as throaty as it needs to be. I asked to play the 1960 Memphis Historic ES 175 they had behind the glass and was able to compare them directly. Wow does this Epiphone acquit itself with style. At over $4000 dollars less expensive than the Gibson, The Epiphone sounded and played as well or better than the Historic. I know the difference and the Historic is a fine guitar and perhaps I favor the Gibson 57 Classic Humbuckers that Epiphone wisely installed in their Premium 175 over the MHS unpotted Alnico Humbuckers in the Historic 175- but man does the Epiphone sing and play beautifully. This is a much better 175 than the version Epiphone recently discontinued (which was also a bit less expensive than this $899 model). One reason for the great play-ablity and sound is the lack of a heavy glossy finish (you know, the polyester or plastic super glossy finishes that a lot of cheaper guitars are encapsulated in). The finish of the Ebony one I purchased is very subtle, almost a matte black and it is a beauty. And it seemed to sound more open and airier when played acoustically than almost every hollow body or semi hollow body guitar in the entire store . The rosewood bridge base is pinned like my Gretsch RHH 6120 and there is a tune-a-matic bridge which makes intonation much easier. The neck feels good and fast (it certainly isn't as beefy as the Historic 175-which has a nearly comical fat neck-and I like big necks!) All in all, this is a really fine, very affordable ES 175. Proud to own it and to display it next to some of the cool guy guitars I am fortunate enough to own.

  • Epi ES-175 Premium Outstanding Value

As reviewed by RANDALL on 9/12/2014

Got a call from Matt at the local GC. He knew I loved hollow body guitars and let me know that I need to see this. With great hesitation and fear (that I would love the guitar) I went in and gave it a try. WOW!! First class value and quality in a very reasonable priced guitar. I was glad to see that Epiphone returned to making guitars in Korea. I had played several examples of their earlier and less expensive 175 and was unimpressed. This guitar is in a totally different league. With the USA Classic 57 pickups and the flawless build quality, this guitar is in a whole different league. The tone is nice and warm with lots of versatility and playability is second to none. I am not kidding or exaggerating when I say that this rivals many of the Gibson 175s I have played. The perfectly applied thin finish was a refreshing change from the usual "encased in plastic" feel I get from many budget guitars. I got the blonde, but I have been told that the other finishes are very nice. Setup was perfect, with the exception of the strings. It is no big deal but I always wondered why jazz guitars are shipped with round-wound 10s. That is really not a big deal. With a fresh set of flatwound 12s and slight adjustment, I was in jazz guitar paradise. If you are looking for a jazz guitar that won't break your bank, but still deliver the sound, feel and playability of the big boys, this is a great choice.

  • Been wanting and waiting!

As reviewed by Edward on 8/4/2014

I am in the process of purchasing this guitar at my local GC store. I've tried it out and loved it. Can't afford the sister guitar, so imagine my surprise when I spotted this Epi version on the wall! It felt perfect in my hands and vibrated warmly against my body. Love the smoothness of the pickups. It appears to be perfect right off the wall. I'll put on some 12s and purchase the case later. BTW I've been playing 46 years and own several guitars including Gibson and Epiphone. This will be my 4th Epi. I will purchase the natural version and can't wait. BTW Joe Pass is one of my favorites.
