This 4-channel Engl tube preamp has much more to offer than just being the heart of a modern Rock rack system. Besides the convincing clean, crunch, and lead tones, a balanced recording compensated output helps you lay your parts straight into your hard drive. A stereo 1.5-watt power amp works with any cabinet or headphone for silent practicing.
The two main channels, Clean and Lead, feature dedicated voicing sections, gain pots and volume controls for precision sound shaping and fine-tuning. The Gain Lo/Hi switch converts the Clean channel to a Crunch channel and, in the Lead channel, the sound spectrum encompasses everything from Heavy Crunch to Ultra Gain. With a 4-band voicing section featuring two midrange bandwidths and a Contour switch that can be accessed via footswitch or the optional ENGL MIDI Switcher Z-11 (sold separately), the Lead channel is amazingly versatile. Another handy feature is the Defeat function, which bypasses the preamp and routes the guitar signal directly to the output. This feature enables you to connect two preamps in series and this option enlarges the tonal spectrum. The variable Stereo Line Out and a frequency compensated Line Out give you a wide range of application options. For instance, you can patch the preamp signal directly to a mixing console or recording device and simultaneously drive a stereo power amp.

You can read the product description to get an idea of what it has to offer... THIS THING IS AMAZING. I am a full on gain kind of guy and I use and EMG 85 in the bridge. This thing has enough gain to launch a rocket and yet it is clear and articulate. It has a VERY modern djent feel to it ala upper mid throaty Tube Screamer kind of feel to it. However, with that being said, you can pull some of those out and get a very smooth super saturated gain for leads that will still cut through a mix. The contour function is also where a lot of the versatility comes into play. However, the two mid controls allow for a WIDE tonal selection. Back off on the gain a touch, and you have a completely different feel/sound. Drop the upper mids a bit, crank the treble and yet another feel/sound. I'll say again: incredibly versatile... The on board power amp (read the manual CAREFULLY) can drive two Eminence loaded 2x12's at either a very low but full tone volume for quiet apartment practice, or it will get surprisingly loud (haven't tried it in context with other instruments but would be surprised if it couldn't be heard). I don't care for the Frequency Compensated Outputs too much (4x12 voice). They are a bit thin an fizzy... When I record direct, I use the Speaker Simulators on a Rocktron Xpression... my taste... lots of on line examples of IR cabs with great results using the regular Line Outs. The Crunch and Clean channels are great... I tend to like those Alex Lifeson circa HOLD YOUR FIRE/PRESTO thin cleans, and the e530 is just a bit too "tubey" and round for my tastes, but still sounds open and clean... lots of good reviews about the clean channel. The Bright switch dramatically changes the feel/sound as well for the Clean channel, but does not function with the Gain engaged. Summary: I couldn't be happier with this. Flexible, versatile, solid construction, simple user interface. I took out the stock tubes and threw in some Penta 12ax7-B's and it opened up wide! Your mileage may vary, but lots of folks say the Engl e530 response very well to different tubes. I don't have any complaints! It's a beast! If you are on the fence with this product, just go for it. I don't see how you could be disappointed.
