Overview

Compression is a tool used on pretty much every recording you will ever hear, yet this extremely useful and versatile tool is often overlooked by guitar players as part of their rig.

Other compressor pedals are often limited by oversimplified controls and heavily colored sounds. Empress has created a truly transparent compressor, complete with all the controls found in the studio. The result is a tool that allows for a wide range of sounds from subtly adding sustain to getting the "quack" that country players love.

With all the controls available in top end studio compressors, the Empress Compressor has opened new sonic doors for guitarists; ranging from truly transparent compression for dynamic control to over the top squashing. We've also included a wet/dry mix knob that allows parallel compression for increased transparency and dynamics. Plus the three compression ratios, 2:1, 4:1 and 10:1, offer lots of flexibility.

Comments about Empress Effects Compressor Analog Compression Guitar Effects Pedal:

The Empress Compressor is well-built and has great sound quality. I swapped it in and out of the signal chain and tested the true bypass with no discernible impact; it's also very quiet in operation (note that I didn't put it in series following other gain effects, like dirt boxes--all compressors can substantially increase the noise floor in that setup). What sets this unit apart from others in the market are the LED meter, the mix control, and the sidechain input. The LEDs make it easy to set levels (like a VU meter). The mix control allows the unprocessed and compressed signals to be blended to help keep the "feel" of the original sound while adding the benefits of compression. The sidechain allows you to do a whole bunch of creative things, such as ducking the bass when the kick hits or, by running a bass's signal through a crossover/HPF, avoiding over-triggering compression because of an overpowering low frequency signal level. The standard controls are included--threshold (labeled "input" here), ratio, and output--and you also get attack and release time controls, which aren't always included and add flexibility. So what are the downsides? The compression ratio is controlled by a three-position toggle switch, which doesn't allow for the same degree of customization as a pot control; the three ratios (2:1, 4:1, and 10:1) do get you everything from mild compression to squashed chicken-pickin', so I didn't feel that *I* was missing anything. You might want that flexibility or the ability to have the unit serve as a limiter (at an infinity:1 ratio). Having a built-in crossover would be nice, too, and there is a unit out there that has that. A hard/soft-knee switch is available on some other units, although it's uncommon in a stomp box. Top-mounted jacks would be good on a jam-packed pedalboard. Of course, no other floor unit has all of these, so pick what matters to you and choose your unit based on that. The Ovnilabs website has many reviews.
