The Octatrack is an 8-track performance sampler. Recording of sounds is a breeze thanks to the intuitive user interface, but the fun really starts once the samples are inside the machine. All audio content can be heavily processed and radically transformed. Loops do not have to be restricted by tempo or tone and can always stay in sync no matter if they are pitch shifted or if the tempo of the sequencer is changed. The inflexible nature of samples is finally a thing of the past.
For the Producer
With the Octatrack you will be able to treat samples in radical ways. You will appreciate functions like changing the melody of certain sections of a vocal sample without the sample going out of sync. The extensive audio mangling capabilities paired with the user friendly interface make the Octatrack an outstanding studio tool.
For the DJ
Thanks to the immediate real time sampling function of the Octatrack you can sample your turntable and instantly play back the recorded loops. Add effects to the captured audio and use the sequencer and the assignable optical crossfader to really add a twist to your set. The Octatrack can be regarded as an extremely flexible second turntable.
For the Performer
Each of the eight stereo tracks can stream gigabyte-large samples which is great if you need backing tracks during a live gig. All samples can still be subject to time stretch and can of course also be processed by the effects or rearranged by the sequencer. The Octatrack is the most capable performance instruments available.

Comments about Elektron Octatrack DPS1 Sampler:
We all know and love the Machinedrum, I wish that's what I'd got.
So it does a lot. I think we all could guess that. The hardware and UI are my main issues, a sampler with 4 inputs and 2 outputs has me a little baffled. Every other production machine in its price range has at least 2 stereo outputs which I have come to understand as a standard. Outboard mixing and effects are absent from the octatrack.
I've been trying to reason this one out and the answer is pretty clear, you need all 3 of the machines in their current line. Without the RYTM and Analog4 I'm feeling like I bought a brain for machines I don't plan on owning.
I use an Akai s5000, MC-909 and Korg ESX-1 alongside Maschine. I use that setup for live and production setups. The Octatrack has no place in the workflow. It has its own thing going on, very little control over it with external midi and controls other devices poorly. Tracks meant to pass midi lose notes. It's clock seems to jump a bit. Jitter is very high across the whole machine.
The hardware is cheap and tiny. Out of the box 3 of the 7 knobs are loose and jump values. The XoX buttons are loud and the leds aren't as responsive as I hoped. About a 7ms delay for the lights. Which I wouldn't complain about if it wasn't the only way to monitor what's happening.
With so many options around it feels like a compromise. It will bend your sounds in ways you can't control and in that sense it will lead to a variety of sounds. Just no meat on the bones. It's a very dry machine. Effects heavy people who want "glitchy" sounds might be pleased. Anyone wanting to model a sound will be disappointed.
I relegate it to a curiously worthless category inhabited by machines like the Teenage Engeering OP-1. It sure looked like it should do something, but when it's time to work the machine feels like its a distraction.
I'll be buying an older machine or the Pioneer SP-16. Which has "issues" that all lead to inspiration.
