Overview

detail, Electro-Voice raises the bar with its ZLX-15P powered loudspeaker. Its rugged enclosure is engineered to exacting standards, delivering exceptional pro-grade audio, even without a subwoofer. With modern styling the ZLX-15P is perfect either as mains or monitors, and represents a new standard for musicians, DJs or anyone looking for more power and portability.

The heartbeat of this compact system is a lightweight and efficient Class-D amplifier, powering a 15 in. woofer and 1.5 in. titanium compression driver with 1000W for an impressive 127 dB SPL with deep low-end response and crisp, clear highs. Compared to its smaller sibling, this 15 in. is better suited for larger spaces and applications calling for more bass output, such as DJing or live instrument reinforcement. Pound-for-pound you’ll be hard pressed to find a harder working speaker in the business, and the ZLX-15P’s robust build means it’s ready to be put through its paces.

Three unique location sound modes optimize the ZLX-15P for any live sound application. Run it up a stand and use the pole setting to gain back the low end you lose from elevating it off the ground. Place it wedge-style on the floor and use the monitor setting to control low end from muddying your stage sound. Or mount it to a wall and use the bracket setting to prevent excess bass buildup from overtaking your mix.

EV puts you even more in control with preset EQ curves that let you effortlessly dial in the perfect sound for your club or venue. Get the people on their feet by sweetening your audio with a smiley-face club EQ curve (excited bass and treble). Or optimize your speakers for music with the neutral live preset, or customize for book readings and live speaking events with the speech preset.

Just got a new pair of EV ZLX-15P powered mains, and did a huge gig with them last night. First off the big seller to me was weight and balance. The videos for these really touted this as LIGHT. Well, they were right on about that. Amazingly light in weight (38 pounds) and so easy to carry and stow on a pole with the handles and the balance. I was ready to buy the Live-X 15P but these were less money and lighter. And the reviews had said the quality was there. I bought these without hearing them. That COULD have been a mistake. But it wasn't. The gig I did last night was to produce a community Jazz show in a huge auditorium. The acts ranged from a jazz sextet, to a 7-piece combo, to a 20 piece big band. The sound quality from these mains (EVEN WITHOUT A SUB-WOOFER) was phenomenal. HUGE low end from the 15's. And the mids and highs were full, clean and crisp. Drums out of these could NOT have been better for the venue (I ran 30 mic's for this show). These mains filled the room. Not only were the drums full, but piano, reeds, and the bones and trumpets really cut through with amazing clarity and fidelty. And the reward at the end of the night was that I was able to dismount the mains from the poles by myself and easily get them into my truck. In fact these mains were LIGHTER than the NON-powered 12" floor monitors I was using. That's saying a lot. The DSP located on the back of the speakers was very easy to use. They really thought this through. I wondered how it would go but it took me all of 10 seconds to figure it out after reading the manual. I had tons of room left to go in the way of volume if needed. I hardly had these turned up at all. EV has hit a grand slam with these. Light in weight, ergo balance, and best of all the sound quality and quantity. These things pack a huge wallop. Even the directors of the event couldn't believe the quality for the size, this after me doing this every year with older HUGE (and heavy) non-powered mains. Subs are next (EV Live-X 18P) but I sure don't need them right away. Thanks EV, great value, great sound, and great to carry around! And did I mention the price? I defy you to find better for this money. These are a steal.

I will cover a few different topics here: Sound: Overall the sound quality is very good. The mids and highs are very good. The low mids seem to be missing. The bass is good but amplified too much and too colored. In 2 presets the bass is almost excessive. There are 4 EQ settings meant for 4 different installations that mainly change the bass response. These settings are good because the bass response is different depending on surroundings such as on a flat surface vs on a pole in free space. Construction: The cabinet is plastic with a metal grille. The finish of both is smooth, looks very nice but I'm concerned that scratches will show easily. The metal grille wraps around the front and is nearly top to bottom. This means that it's vulnerable to being dented easily as these get banged around on the road, even though the grill is heavy gauge. The rear top and bottom handles are very nice. They tilt back slightly which make them look nice and this is generally prefered to point the sound up a little. Features and connections: The 2 combo inputs are a good amount. There is a 3.5mm stereo input (that is summed to mono) that is controlled by input 1. There is a little DSP controller for preset EQ, volume limits and clipping indicator. This is a nice feature so the speakers are not overdriven and you know when you're clipping BUT they are way too conservative (discussed more below). There is a line level output for subs or daisy chaining. Technical teardown: There is a switching power supply that runs at 330kHz and supplies +/- 36V rails for the amplifier ICs. The HF amp is an ST TDA7294 linear amp IC that is rated for 100W. The LF amp is an NXP TDA8953 switching amplifier rated at 420W at 93% efficiency. The signal op amps are MC33178 (6). There is an ST ARM Cortex M3 uC 32F100 with 128k flash. This seems like overkill to run just an LCD and a couple knobs. There is an Analog Devices ADAU1701 DSP with 2 ADCs and 4 DACs built in. This is where the EQ and clipping detection and (over) limiting happen. It's all good circuitry but the TDA7294 is very inefficient. They probably didn't use a class D amp because of it not performing well enough at high frequencies and artifacts. The LF amp is very nice but EXTREMELY under utilized as it only outputs about 10W RMS max. Technical sound test: I uses a pink noise generator and ran the volume up until the LCD/DSP displayed "limit". The measured SPL with C weighting at 1 meter was 117dB. Turning it up all the way only increased the output by 1dB. I then changed the signal to 1kHz sine wave. The output at 1meter was 111dB before the LCD/DSP said it was at "limit". Increasing the volume to the max increase the output to 118kB. This output is FAR from the advertized and specified output power of 127dB. This is very disappointing and disturbing that EV would lie so much about the specs. I have been a fan of EV for 25 years because they have typically done a very good job on specs. They advertize a 1000 watt amplifier which is true IF it was configured correctly. Unfortunately the power supply is not capable of supplying the specified power as it is configured. With a 72Vpp PS, the peak into 8 ohms is 650W and 450W RMS but the DSP limits it much more. I measured the input power to measure efficiency (the 120VAC input on the power cord) at 3 different conditions: During idle the power consumption is 20W. During full power (no clipping), pink input, the power consumption is 55W. During full power with clipping the power consumption is about 110W. Assuming a 93% efficient amp for the LF and 40% efficient amp for the HF, the combined output can only be about 15 Watts. 15 watts of amplifier output is far from the 1000 watts advertised. Very disappointing.

Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-15P 15" 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

I bought a pair of these EV ZLX 15p speakers and I was thoroughly impressed. I bought them and used them right out of the box for a wedding the same day. I set them up with a QSC Ksub using my DriveRack PX Powered Speaker Optimizer. All I can say is Superb sound. I can't believe they don't cost more. Keep up the good work EV.

Great Sound, Look, and Feel

By Matthew Corzine

from Collinsville, IL

Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-15P 15" 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

I am an independent mobile DJ upgrading from a pair of B215D's, I have been DJ'ing for 10 years in the St. Louis area, averaging 50-55 events per year ranging in size from 100 - 500 guests. When paired with a powered 18" JBL sub the B215D's were great speakers but I found myself purchasing new or repairing them every 2-3 years because the amplifier components would fail and either the horn or woofer would stop playing audio. On to the ZLX-15P's. I was persuaded by the GC salesman to buy these and I didn't mind trying them out given my past experiences with non powered EV speakers. The Pros: Let me say the sound quality is great. I love cranking these speakers up and hearing the crisp, quality audio. The physical design of these are impressive, I love the three rubberized handles, the rubber floor grips for stage, and the physical look of the unit. The features are nice as well. The basic treble/bass controls are there but there is also a low end cut for use with subs. Also some audio shaping for different environments, I usually just leave it set to 'Music' and clip the 80Hz off. The Cons: I am disappointed by the volume output. I don't have a dB meter or I would test it. Even pairing them with my 18" JBL sub and doing a low cut on the speakers I am not impressed. The clipping begins before I would expect. Another issue is after a minute of clipping (not constant, I wouldn't intentionally damage my equipment) I can smell what I believe to be the woofer coil burning. This is what is driving me to return them. This month alone I have put them in front of a 100 and 500 attendance wedding. Both events I experienced clipping and the burning smell. The 500 I could understand but definitely not the 100. I saw the price on these drop from 500 bucks to 400 1 week after I bought them. Conclusion: These are great sounding speakers, I would definitely recommend them for studio or small events paired with a sub. The features are plentiful and nice but even with 1000 watt amps they can't handle larger events. Will be trying out the EON's or making the jump to QSC.

Absolutely FANTASTIC!

By Tim Parrish

from Rockford, IL.

Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-15P 15" 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

After a couple loooong months of research looking for the right powered speakers to use with my Roland V-Drums, I decided on these EV ZLX15P's. I was looking for clean sound, QUALITY sound, plenty of power/headroom for the dynamic demands of electronic drums, and versatility in their application. I had it narrowed to 2 units: a JBL EON model, and these EV's. First, let me tell you they do NOT have the same "flavor" in their sound reproduction! Don't get me wrong here, the JBL unit sounded very good, and has plenty of punch. The JBL name is a plus, obviously, but EV has the background to match or surpass JBL in pro audio! one of the several factors that pushed me to the EV was the 1/8" input for use with an ipod or similar audio source. The other MAIN factor was it's DSP EQ capabilities! The versatility of the ZLX15P makes it a number 1 winner in my book! As I mentioned, the majority of my use is with my V-Drums, but I also occasionally plug in my ipod to crank up some tunes when friends are over, etc. To sum it up, I chose the ZLX15P's for their overall extraordinarily high build quality, fantastic sound, high power amplifier punch (1000w peak, approx 700 RMS based on my calculations) that is VERY clean!, and versatility for various input sources! I am very much a researcher, and there really was no competition when all the factors were considered. The ZLX15P is an AWESOME powered speaker, and I am EXTREMELY satisfied with my purchase! Would I buy again?......ABSO-FREAKIN-LUTELY! (and by the way, Joe at the Rockford store was fantastic to deal with....great service, great price, and very knowledgeable!.....Thx Joe!)

Great Speakers for the Price - Buy Them

    By DENNIS OROSA

    from Los Angeles, CA

    Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-15P 15" 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

Bought these pre-order during one of the sales to upgrade from my Mackie Thumps. For the price, these are a steal and have comparable sound to some JBL, Yamaha, QSC. I saw the selling points regarding the handles and digital display but nothing special there. The 2 channel input is a nice feature and the connections which allow for XLR, 1/4, and 1/8. But most impressive was the clarity of the sound and loudness. They're extremely loud and have great bass. They run warm but this is similar to my experience with most other powered speakers. If you're in the market for speakers, I highly recommend you check these out.

    Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-15P 15" 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

I had been using Harbinger APS15s in a small venue and was needing an upgrade. I play an acoustic fairly loud and the Harbingers were clipping with my vocals. The EVs haven't even gotten close to clipping at higher volumes. If you ran a sub with these...who knows? Personally, I don't need it. I like them a lot so far. For a small venue, they are on the verge of being overkill. Very clean and lots of range, high and low. I like the enclosure and the weight as well. It has a much more solid feel that the rest of the molded plastic enclosures. The bass is big and tight. Where I was clipping before, I am running about 50-60% with these.

    Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-15P 15" 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

I recently decided to put a system together to DJ again after a ten year break from DJing. My previous system contained a pair of Electro Voice 12" with a pair of subs. This time around I needed to keep the system smaller and more portable.I was looking for powered speakers. I did not want to sacrifice quality at the expense of money howeve,r and with the Electro Voice ZLX-15P I found the perfect speakers. These things flat out ROCK!. I used them for a mid size wedding this past weekend and could not believe the sound. Clear, crisp, lots of bass, and filled the room at with sound without even reaching a third of their capacity.

    Amazing Speakers!

    Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-15P 15" 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

I am new to DJ'ing (started in September 2012), doing school dances of about 100 people so far. I've been using two Behringer B215D's and a Mackie SRM1801 sub (which I've been told is a great starting system). Now for the actual review - Bass is very clear and punchy, great for the Electronic and Hip-Hop/Rap songs. These speakers alone have amazing bass, and paired with a sub (with or without the crossover) is even better! - The treble is not piercing to the ear (which I faced with the B215D's) - The top/bottom handles are more helpful than I thought they would be, moving these speakers is a breeze (also because they're lightweight) - The build quality is outstanding. The metal grille is very tough and doesn't bend in towards the speaker if you accidentally push on it. There's also no risk of cracking them in half like the B215D's - Having the 1/8in input is such a luxury (I know that sounds like a very small factor, but it's nice to be able to take only one speaker, a 3ft aux cable, and the power cord to a small event) - The control display is very easy to use, and any changes happen quickly (like switching modes)

I purchased these speakers about two weeks ago. They sound amazing! What I especially like about these speakers is that they are light weight compared to the JBL EON's. Huge difference in weight. The EV's out do the JBL's by a mile when it comes to sound. I highly recommend these speakers hands down!

The speakers are very well built and easy to setup. They will produce more sound that yu constant some VERY careful. They are light enough to be fairly easy to lift and place them on their stands but heavy enough that they set well without being easy to knock over.

          Great DJ / Venue Loudspeakers!

          By Darrell

          from Arlington, Texas

          Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-15P 15" 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

I bought the ZLX-15Ps for my mobile DJ use because of their powerful DSP, lightweight form, and very flat, powerful response. One pair of these, coupled with powered sub can project beautifully for crowds of 100 to 150 people. For larger venues, the big brother ETX-115P can do the job remarkably. I think the only missing feature of this speaker was flying hardware, but high-height poles make up for that shortcoming. Pianos and electric drums will thank you for great sound. The reliability is unquestionably Electro Voice. Handles are positioned to make easy the task of pole mounting. This is the speaker you must hear to believe!

          Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-15P 15" 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

I purchased these speakers about 2 months ago. I've been having problems with these speakers since pretty much day one! I had to replace one of the speakers because the LED light was not lit even though the speaker appeared to be working fine. One of the speakers went out in the middle of my DJ gig so I was left with one working speaker only. The speaker was working fine one minute and all of a sudden, no sound! Tried replacing both the mic and power cables, same problem. No sound! The speaker turns on, no popping sounds or any other indication that a fuse had blown or something. It just stopped working. I'm starting to regret my decision to purchase these speakers. They are not reliable! I can't have these speakers go out in the middle of a gig like they did! Now I have to get them serviced at a warranty location and even after service, I am not entirely sure these speakers will work properly.

Mobile DJ with 20 plus year experience. Just bought these and paired them with the
ETX-18SP subs. these are very clear sounding speakers. My only consern is the volume, I set it to inf on the speakers and my mixer isn't even up half way and they start to limit. I added a fan to help cool each one, really didnt help much. I dont want to push them too much because I dont want to break them. The sound is just as clear as can be. Other than the early limiting I would recommend them, get the covers so you dont scratch them.
