I was looking for an active system to replace my aging jbl mrx tops, that I primarily used for small-medium club events, school plays, and smaller rentals. Additionally, I was looking for something that could be used as stage monitors as well for my larger shows. These boxes fit my budget, and seemed like they would fit all the needs I just mentioned. After purchasing, I was a little skeptical that they would have enough power to handle my needs, and I was a bit fearful that they'd start clipping before the needed output level was reached. The first event I took them to was at a local club. The place wasn't too large, it could hold maybe about 100-150 people max, with a dance floor capacity of about 50. The act that was playing was a regular of mine, a pop group that included drums, bass, guitar, keys, sax, trumpet, and 4 vocals. The zlx12p's were paired up with a set of cerwin vega sl-36's powered by a qsc rmx2450, 1 sub and 1 top per side. I cut everything below 60 Hz to the tops, and everything above 75 Hz for the subs. During setup, I ran pink noise trough the console, with the output meters kissing 0dB, then did the same on channel 1 of the zlx's, finally I pulled the master volume up to 0dB, with the setting on live/pole mode. Once the band began, I'm pretty sure I didn't stop smiling for the entire night. To say the mids and highs were good is a complete understatement. With very little eq I had the entire group sounding fantastic, and I wasn't the only one to notice. The dance floor was more packed than it had ever been, and everyone stuck around until the end, a phenomenon I had never witnessed with this group/venue combination before. The band leader commented at the end of the night that he had never had so many compliments, and every musician was showering me with praise. The female vocalist had only been with the group for a few months, and I had never worked a show with her. Her family couldn't stop telling me how clear she sounded, and that how at every other gig, her voice got buried under everything else. These little plastic boxes sound as good as something 5 times as expensive, and I definitely plan on purchasing more (as soon as this week, actually). They aren't the least bit harsh, unlike the jbl prx's I work with at a different company I sub for. Giving the correct application, they really do shine. I wouldn't recommend using them as mains for larger outdoor locations, nor if your band has a bunch of marshall cabs all over the stage, and if you're a dj, I'd plan on taking subs with you to your event. Next week I have a few gigs with an irish folk/rock group, hopefully by then I'll have another pair and can see how they do as monitors.

Just got the first pair of the 3 seperate pairs ordered and only had 1 out the box for a listen and inspection so far. I did find some quality control issues, the badge had some slight rattle if I tap on the grill so I wemoved the screws and pulled the grill where I found several issues. Made in China at it's best! Of the 8 screws that fasten the LF driver in the frame, 3x were about 3/4in still sticking out and the rest were not very tightly installed, The little IC behind the badge that holds the front LED was loose and one of the 6x screws that hold the front grill on dont get tight because the plastic threads are stripped. This was a sad sigh for me to see and leaves me uncertain if these things will last a long time or fail early. The audio check I performed was only a basic test at home with several tracks sampled via ipod directly connected and with some brief high volume audio and tested on the dirfferent dsp modes. Sounded good with some powerful output and I can't wait to try these in a live performance as stage monitors as that will be the intended use.

Not bad but Not amazing

Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-12P 12 In. 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

I decided to try these out. I have been a QSC fan for a while now. I looked at some reviews of these and decided to try it out in comparison to my K12s. These just do not cut it for me. I guess I have been spoiled by the K12s. I was barely pushing them and they got very hot, especially with no fan. If you are looking for a good inexpensive speaker this is not bad, but if you are more of an audiophile look else where.

Great so far

By Kenny Empson

Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-12P 12 In. 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

We've had two of the ZLX12Ps for a bit over three months. Just a quick, short review. We've used them as mains for our acoustic gigs; as monitors for the front line; and as a drum monitor. They've worked flawlessly in every situation we've thrown at them. Our singer says they are the best she's heard from all of the different monitor systems we've used in the past 10yrs or so. If I had one thing to change, it would be the placement of the side handle. It's on the bottom when in monitor mode; but that is a minor issue. Other than that, these are very good. Especially in this price range.

Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-12P 12 In. 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

I have DJed for over 25 years and used EVs in the past and they have always produced clean crisp sound. Im not really big on powered speakers, but I was looking for a easier rig to use for smaller venues. So I was in the market the for 12s and I was interested in the QSC K12 but not looking to spend as much. So I did some research and was turned on to the ZLX 12p as a comparison. After putting them side by side the zlx is by far extremely impressive for the price and the features they have. The overall sound quality is the best I heard from a 12" loudspeaker. So I bought a pair and I am proud to say EV has done it again. lookout QSC K12 there's a new sheriff in town.

Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-12P 12 In. 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

Ive been a DJ in the Boston for over 30 yrs plus and wanted speakers with great vocal clarity and a nice fat sound both low and high volume and lightweight. Ev has done it.DSP controls awesome. Thumping club sound in club mode. It is very important to have your laptop or source going in is properly equalized to get the most out of these or any speakers and you will have the best sound.I am very very pleased thank you EV !

I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for, well in this case you get much more than you pay for. I'm using 3 of these as floor wedges with QSC's for the mains. These bad boys hold their own against the more than twice the price QSC's. I'm not comparing the two, but for dollar to dollar you can't go wrong with the EV's.

Great Speaker for live use

By Brian hutton

Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-12P 12 In. 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

Im a drummer, audiophile and a studio engineer. I got to the point where i got tired of going to different venues and the sound is horrible or just not to my liking so i decided i was going to purchase a personal monitor for self use..........this speaker is awesome, light weight, very modern looking and most importantly the sound is crystal clear. great presence and it sounds very deep, great low end also. I did my first gig with this speaker. when i brought it in everyone noticed how stylish and pro level it looked and also they complemented me on how good it sounded. I used it as a monitor by my drums and it was plenty loud enough with nice tight low end. the dsp makes it very new age also. overall Im very pleased with my purchase. EV has taken it to another level!

My plan was to replace my portable fender passport for individual gigs with these and a small mixer
Then use these as monitors on our full band as I upgrade our larger system to power speakers also
    This should work!
I have used them on one outdoor solo gig and they really have a loud clean sound
I was surprised that after 100 ft away the sound really drops off so the don't throw/ carry the sound as far as I would have thought.
    Hopefully the 15" will better.

I purchased several of the ZLX 12P powered monitors a week ago and after 3 live shows I am totally blown away at how amazing these sound. I have been using EV for many years and always thought that had the best sound. Always tight bass, clear mids and crisp highs without sounding harsh... I could go on and on how everyone in the bands and audience raved at how better the groups sounded compared to other groups playing in the same venue and I know it is due to how great these speakers sound. For the price there cant possibly be anything better. I have owned the Mackie 15's, SRM I think, and two different models of JBL EONS... they are both good powered speakers in their own right but Electro Voice BLOWS them away in direct comparison.

      Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-12P 12 In. 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

As a drummer that plays with various groups of musicians, I either use a click/backtrack or loops I create through a Roland SPD-30. Volume tends to get louder throughout a gig, and that can be a problem when you HAVE TO HEAR the track/loop you're playing along to. Having to constantly communicate to the sound man to adjust levels gets old; especially when you're particular about the mix.
While there are many ways to take control of a personal monitor mix, I felt that adding a portable monitor with multiple inputs was an excellent 2-in-1 option. It's a small mixer (with its inputs) and a speaker. Enough of the gigs I play don't provide a monitor for every player on stage, so having my own mixer/speaker makes me self-sufficient.
I really thought of going with an IEM system, but I prefer to hear the room. I like IEM's, but I just felt detached from the acoustic sound of my drums. Plus, I found it challenging to communicate with other musicians on stage during a song. For me, this was the solution, and I went with EV because they make a darn good product. It's an excellent speaker at an excellent price. The only thing I wish for is that the volume controls were easier to get to from the front, but I knew the challenges when I bought the speaker. Maybe for future development, EV can offer a model with controls that are more easily accessible for on-the-fly adjustments for those of us that use this as a personal monitor/mixer.

          Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-12P 12 In. 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

Great speaker! Overally sound is nice, good low end, clear bright highs. I considered Yamaha's 12" but it just did not push air like the EV. I primarily perform with a 7 piece, loud(!) funk band and needed a powerful monitor to cut through the ruckus. EV had it.

One thing though.. I bought a brand new one and took it to practice to use as a monitor. Plugged an xlr into the second input... where it stayed. It appeared the locking mechanism and its spring were bad. That cable was simply not coming back out. Took it back to the GC store here in Omaha and Paul took great care of me! He exchanged it for a brand new one, hooked me up with a new cable to replace the one that was stuck. And Bonus: the speaker went on sale since I originally purchased it and they gave me the credit to spend. So I had them order me in the matching EV case and it arrived at my house 2 days later. It fits perfect and looks great. Killing it GC Omaha!

I would definitely recommend checking this speaker out. Just do a couple quality assurance tests before you take it home.

          Great Boxes

          from Peculiar, MO

          Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-12P 12 In. 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

I have two of the 12" ZLX speakers. We use them in the full band as monitors. Then as mains when we do acoustic gigs. Features: They definitely have more features that we'll use. The quick change from Monitor to Pole mounted is great. Takes less than a minute to configure for either application. We've left every other setting on the default. Quality/Reliability: So far they've been very reliable. No issues. The quality is definitely better than the JBLs we had. What do you need to hear clearly thru a monitor? Vocals? Yep. And our vocalist mentioned on day 1 that these were easier to hear, had a better "throw" and made her job just that much easier. Digging mine, too. Look/Feel: They look pretty darned cool; well, to me they do. Lightweight, compact design; 3 handles! One person can mount these on a pole. If I had one complaint (so far) it's that the side handle is on the floor in monitor mode. Seems it should be on the top side for ease of movement when in that mode. But, at 38lbs (?) they're still easy to move. We made our own covers for them. Cheaper, better than the ones offered by EV. Guess that's my second complaint. Why don't they come with covers? Overall, we are very happy with these speakers. Highly recommended.

Great price, potentially great sounding. Resonance buzz.

            Comments about Electro-Voice ZLX-12P 12 In. 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

I'm using ZLX12p speakers for acoustic performances.

2 of the 3 ZLX12p speakers that I've purchased have a resonance buzz, meaning, at specific frequencies the cabinet resonates which produces a buzzing type sound. For example, playing a low G, G#, or low A note causes the cabinet to buzz, even at very low volumes. Any note played outside these frequencies is full, crisp, and clean.
I've reproduced the exact same issue using an iphone guitar app to rule-out the issue being my guitar.
The first speaker was exchanged. I demonstrated the problem at my local guitar center which handled the exchange promptly. I tested the new one, in store, prior to leaving.

I purchased a 2nd speaker (also tested in store prior to leaving) a few weeks later because of the great sound quality, size, and price. Last night, while performing live, I noticed the same issue with one of the 2 that I currently own. This inconsistency is bothersome. I'm hoping the warranty will cover the repair or the replacement.

Again, I really like the speaker for a variety of reasons, but if this problem persists, I'll be forced to change to a different manufacturer. On that note, I've also experienced this same effect with a Yamaha DXR.

I spent several days looking for a quality powered speaker that wasn't going to break the bank, and I found it.
Very clear, good bass response and good features.

This are by far the best speakers for the price. I compared them with the jbl eon 12 and the sound quality that came out of the EV's you could not compare them to the jbl's. The EV's sound was just awesome. I would recommended them 110% you will not be disappointed..

I used these to as a PA and to enhance the sound of our community band. We liked them so much we bought two more to act as monitors for our outdoor performances.
