We purchased four of these in combo with four elx 112p tops for a mobile church solution. We Meet in a movie theater that seats about 475 and play pretty aggressive/rock driven worship music. We wanted a very specific experience in our services and with the EV products we have absolutely achieved a level of excellence on par with what I've experienced at very large shows and churches. We run the subs straight off a mono output on a yamaha console with the low pass set at 80 hertz. Others may want to come up to 100 or 120, but we found ourselves most pleased with the sound at 80. Chests rumble and people say "wow" when they experience our system. My only negative (as you will see in other reviews) is the paint finish. It is not nearly as durable as whats on some of the other wooden boxes out there (like the JBL PRX) but considering the cost difference its obvious that EV saved some cash on the finish without negatively impacting the quality of the components. Some black automotive finish touch up will help you out with these as chips and dings are inevitable. If I had it all to do over again I would still make this purchase every time. IMO, for the money, these are hands down the best speakers in their range (from a bang for the buck perspective).

Purchased this product on 6/30/17 and it blew out on me 7/2/17 during a wedding a reception half way through. Talk about embarrassed, lucky I had the 12 inch sub-woofer to back it up.

The speaker was sounding great at first and I didn't have it turned all the way up.

I should of saw the warning signs when I opened the box and it already had a dent on the screen, I spoke to the sales person at Guitar Center and he offered to return it. I needed it and really liked the sound when I first tested it. I was going to keep it regardless of the dent.

I will be bringing it back first thing tomorrow morning.

good indoor, but needs more power

By Tom Clarkson

Comments about Electro-Voice ELX118P Active 18" Subwoofer:

This works great in clubs, but at minimum this should have come with a 1000 watt amp. Outdoors...not so good unless you are in a "small" setting. My only beef with the Live-X's is the cabinet. It's just painted wood which dents and chips easy. EV could have done a better job with a vinyl or gortex cover to protect it from wear and tear. I found if you get black auto paint in the bottle, it matches perfect to fix any scratches, etc. Outside of that, great for the money!

Excellent Powered Sub for the Price

Comments about Electro-Voice ELX118P Active 18" Subwoofer:

I'm a Mobil Dj in Florida, I bough a pair of the top 15 and they sound great but still need it that lowend the feed my tops for big gig. I went a purchase a pair of these subs and let me tell you that the kick I got out of them is incredible, also the weight is nothing, very light and great to handle since I'm by my self doing the set ups. I play a lots Latin, Reggae, and top 40 , and they sound great. I will recommend these subs if you the same brand on tops, they work best when in pair.

No output at all

Comments about Electro-Voice ELX118P Active 18" Subwoofer:

We very disappointed in the output of this sub. To get it to sound anywhere good for hip hop or dubstep type music I have to make it limit the whole time. Carried it back and ended up with the new Alto Black 18 and WOW........

EV ELX118P

By BRANDEN VIDAL

from Orlando, Florida

Comments about Electro-Voice ELX118P Active 18" Subwoofer:

I have been a DJ for over 6 years now and decided to upgrade to new equipment. After about 2 months of searching and hearing speakers from Mackies to QSC's I came across the EV Live X series. After hearing them I found that they sounded amazing, if not, better than the QSC's and blew Mackie's speakers away that were at Guitar Center. I decided to invest into the EV Live X series of 2 ELX112Ps and a ELX118P (which packs a major clear thump covering a large area). They have provided crisp clear sound "without peaking" for all of the medium to large venues I have used them for. Providing me with compliments and more gigs each time I use them because of their power and clarity . These speakers just like any other may have poor reviews but don't listen to them as they are ones that are reliable and will not disappoint you.

Comments about Electro-Voice ELX118P Active 18" Subwoofer:

Not worth the money. These subs are ridiculously over price for what you get. I purchased four of them and regret it. They are under powered, just when you get to the point of dialing them in they will fall on there face. The cabinets them self seem to be made of some cheep balsa wood..they damage very easy. after 6 moths of use they look like there 10 years old. How many people have had a pole mount break on there sub? Well i had to replace one of those as well. Bottom line i will not purchase anything EV. EVER

    Comments about Electro-Voice ELX118P Active 18" Subwoofer:

I use a pair of these with EV ZLX15P tops running through a digital mixer. *side note - I do occasional use a dbx GoRack for moderate sound/environment enhancements.

I use them in my rehearsal space with my Tool/Deftones tribute-style band. We use them to push kick drum, d.i. Bass guitar, my Helix Rack and vocals. We also run music through when we need to dissect a song we are covering. I run my Roland TD-11 drum kit into them as well.

I used my 15" tops by themselves before buying these, so I know what a difference maker/game changer they are. I keep the volume at MAX and the EQ curve flat, I run the pass-thru cable to provide signal to the tops thru the sub output. We EQ each channel for balancing so the subs are murdered with too much low end from everything being sent into it.

The only issues I've heard out of these came from using the Roland drums and that was probably my negligence or lack of knowledge on EQ'ing e-drums. The 808 kit sounds a little clubby on the bass drop triggers. Normal kick drum triggers sound fine.

People saying these are not loud enough or they have to push them til the limiter lights up... you need to add subs to you current rig or get more powerful subs. We run 4 to 6 of these subs at a 500-head venue with 4-2x15" job tops and 4 EV ZLX12's as monitors on stage. It always sounds great. The 6 sounds better than the 4 simply because we have 6 subs proving the low end and we aren't having to push each sub as hard to achieve our required volume/level of thump.

2 of these in our rehearsal are (24x36' detached garage, mostly sound treated) sound great with the accompanying 15" tops. When it comes to venues, more is better. There's more space to fill and will require more spl's than a pair of these can provide.

Be sure to pick up the covers - they are worth their weight in gold and will keep your investment looking fresh and keep those grills nice and scratch free.

I mount the tops on the subs using OnStage branded poles.
