I gigged in my most recent cover band for 3 years (before we went our separate ways) and we were VERY busy. For three years straight we never missed a weekend, but most of the time we gigged twice a week.

Our PA was a Mackie board, with three giant amps and an EQ in the rack that ran our passive speakers. The PA rack weighed as much as a car, and the speakers would make you grit your teeth when you picked em up. As many of you know, set-up and tear-down was sweaty and tiring.

We broke up and I knew I needed my own PA... did a lot of research and finally decided to start with two of the EV 115P Live X speakers. When I took them out of the boxes I couldn't BELIEVE how light they were... I was immediately skeptical. I had always equated weight with sound quality/volume. When I finally plugged em into a little Soundcraft Notepad mixer and fired everything up, ... I was blown away... the sound was LOUD and amazingly crisp and clear. Why for all those years did I break my back with that outdated passive system! I don't know if that old passive system was capable of being louder, but we NEVER turned our old system louder than these Live X's can handle, ... with just the same (if not better) sound quality and HALF THE WEIGHT! And we're talking about covering 90's Alt Rock and Punk...!

A few months later I answered an ad, went and auditioned for a Punk/Ska band. These guys had a very similar system to my old band (passive and clunky). When we started booking gigs, I asked them to check out my active EV's... They were just as blown away as I was. We now use my EV 115's exclusively for mids and highs and are saving up for the EV 118p Subs. Our entire system will be EV active... show up, set-up, sound check and rock it in half the time, and all the volume.

I usually don't write reviews, but I saw that there weren't many reviews on these speakers... and they are worth it. They put out enough loud, clean sound for any working musican's venue and they are so light that you can just pick one right up and put it on a speaker stand by yourself. After 8 months of using these EV 115Ps, it would be hard to believe that these EV Live X speaker aren't flying off the shelves... I URGE you to put this speaker against ANY of the more "known" brands in a side-by-side comparison...

Nice hook up options.
Purchased this product for church services (mild use). One of the speakers worked for only 2 services......on the third service it was badly distorted (even at the lowest input volume and output level). I am awaiting the verdict on the cause (it is in the shop currently). I have used EV speakers for over 30 years and still can't believe they would put out such a lemon. I realize an Electro-voice rep will probablt never read this review .. but they need to seriously review what went wrong with this design.

    Comments about Electro-Voice ELX115P Active 15" Loudspeaker:

I've been a disc jockey and provided sound reinforcement for about 28 years now and currently also own speakers from Yamaha, Peavey, JBL, Alto, and Behringer. These are my best speakers by a landslide. Simply put, they sound loud, larger, and superior clarity than any speaker that I've ever owned. I used them earlier tonight and felt the need to finally write this review as I provided music and announcements for one of the most difficult environments possible--Outdoors during a fireworks show. Under these circumstances and with no additional sound processing, I was very pleased with their ability to project loud clear sound that could easily be heard by the hundreds of spectators at the show. I was so pleased with the sound from earlier indoor shows that I now own three pairs of the ELXp's with the 118p's to boot. I opted not to go with JBL PRX because of the $100 difference and the JBL's only have one handle on each speaker. On that note, I wish that the handles on the ELX's were horizontal so that one can put them on stands more easier OR simply have multiple handles. I also did not go with EV EKX or ETX because I'm not confident with internal DSP--I need my processing within arms reach. Another selling point of the EV product is that they make everything in and on the speaker. Thus, they're able to fine tune the enclosure and amplifier to maximize the transducers for optimal sound quality and volume. I am confident that the improved sound and loudness will land me additional gigs in the near future.

    Comments about Electro-Voice ELX115P Active 15" Loudspeaker:

Excellent sound by themselves for acoustic acts, and when coupled with a pair of good subs, they ROCK!

    Two Complaints -
    (1) They do get scarred up a bit with the paint, so you'll definitely want to get the covers to go with.
    (2) The handles SUCK! There is simply no way to easily pick these up and put them on speaker stands or on pole mounts over subs!!! The horizontal handles are not wrist-friendly. They should have been vertically built.

But this shouldn't be a deal breaker if you're looking for a great sounding pair of mains.

      Comments about Electro-Voice ELX115P Active 15" Loudspeaker:

As long as you are aware of the thermal protection. This is the best value for a self powered speaker by a long shot. I've seen other reviews that recommend going with the plastic cabinet version. This is a mistake for numerous reasons. The most of which is the wrap around bass effect that is prevalent with almost all plastic cabinets including the EV's. The other is the actual bass response that is lost by the flexing of the resonant chamber of a plastic speaker enclosure. These are not legitamate reasons to spend more money on wood cabinets if you are working as a mobile dj. But they are very real if you are doing live sound work especially in a medium sized venue where the mics are close to the mains. An absolute nightmare if you are using microphones to produce acoustic instruments.

      EV 115p Live X Speakers

      Comments about Electro-Voice ELX115P Active 15" Loudspeaker:

Just bought a pair of these speakers and matched them up with a Mackie Pro FX mixer. They are the best speakers I've ever used at this price point. Our bans was renting JBL PRX speakers which are much more expensive. These sound warmer than the JBLs and are loud if you need to push them. The vocals come through great. I play keys and run them through the PA. My CP 300 and Nord Electro sound terrific through these speakers. One of the speakers came in with a dented grille. The folks at GC replaced that speaker for me quickly. Buy these speakers!

        Comments about Electro-Voice ELX115P Active 15" Loudspeaker:

I really like this speaker and what all it can do, but when I went to test them I ran into a problem where one speaker wouldn't work if I jump them together with a single line going to my mixer board. I call the company and they had me try a few things and said if that doesn't work to call back and we will just send you new ones, especially since you bought the insurance package.

Well I call again this morning because I still had problems and they sales guy in the live sound department was rude and really didn't care about helping me. I was nice to him and felt like he could have helped me a little more than he did, just because when I pulled up my account he can tell I have spent thousands with this company. I doubt I will do further business with them.

        Great Speaker System!

        By John Helder

        from Lancaster, PA

        Comments about Electro-Voice ELX115P Active 15" Loudspeaker:

These are my first powered speakers. In the past I have owned Yamaha, EV, and custom built JBL cabinets. I had a DJ system and worked weekends for 20 years for crowds numbering from around 70 to over 600 people. I received the EV 115P speakers on Wednesday and put them to work that Saturday. I was almost shocked at how simple the set up was. I played music for a Christmas party of about 120 people. These EV's simply sounded great. They were easy to put on and off tripod stands. They are clear and accurate. The extra you pay for the amp integrated into the speaker cabinet is well worth the price. I would get them again.

          Comments about Electro-Voice ELX115P Active 15" Loudspeaker:

These are probably the best powered speakers...for the money...currently on the market! I have been a mobile DJ for many years. Started with a large/heavy passive rig. I quickly discovered that powered speakers were the way to go. I have owned many, many powered speakers. Started with the old reliable EONs (2 variations), K12s, Zx5a, ELX and FBT Promaxx. The ELXs are pound for pound, buck for buck, THE FINEST boxes, all things considered. I usually pair them up with my K12s or Promaxx 14a's. The 4 speaker rig hits hard and clean enough to handle any dance, up to 300-350 people. No subs needed!

The only negative regarding the ELXs: BEWARE of using these outdoors, in direct sunlight. They WILL shut down on you (temporarily), due to thermal overload. The heat dissipation system is lacking. I know other DJs who have had the same issue. Never had them do this indoors, though...only in direct sunlight. QSC really leads the market (for all powered speaker manufacturers) in this department. They are currently the only company to incorporate a fan/exhaust system, for cooling purposes. They never get warm, even outdoors, in direct sunlight. The K12s saved my rump when the EVs 'thermaled' on me!

These ELXs are really smooth and warm sounding, thanks to the wood cabs. They also bring some serious thump via that 15" driver and 1000W of Class D power. They are the 'meat and potatoes' of my mobile system...and will be for some time.
