5.0

Highest performance even against more expensive competitors.

By Collin Kennedy

from Plano, TX

Comments about Electro-Voice ELX112P Active 12" Loudspeaker:

The Electro Voice ELX-112p and ELX-118p seriously outperform more expensive models from JBL, QSC, and Mackie. They are easy to use, easy to move, and produce really excellent sound quality. An A-B comparison between these EV's and the much more expensive QSC 12" powered 2-way reveals the EV has a much cleaner and clearer high frequency driver. When compared directly the QSC sound muffled, the high end almost "smeared" compared to the mich crisper clearer EV's While the EV tops are a couple of hundred less than other makes, the excellent 18" subs keep pace as well and for half the price of the competitors offerings. I highly recommend these to touring musicians, houses of worship, DJ's, mobile sound, they would even do well in a rental environment provided they were cased for transport, because the finish is painted directly onto the wood cabinet. Audition them, and I think you will buy them, excellent sound for the price.

EV stands Out

By Fred Obermeyer

from Apache Junction, AZ

Comments about Electro-Voice ELX112P Active 12" Loudspeaker:

These speakers were first used in a Restaurant with a Stage and high ceilings. The JBL system they had was out dated and was run by a Yahmaha Pa Board. Our New powered EV speakers Blew there entire system away and sounded Awesome. They are light weight with Easy set up. The Deciablas can be adjusted for gain and reduction hums. A cool thing to have for live performances. The 1,000 watt peak makes a difference for any menue. I plan on buying the 15" pair next. You won't regret buying these speakers they can handle it in any situation. I now use them in my studio for Live recording work, and turn off my other speakers. For the price they can not be beat and are light weight.

Comments about Electro-Voice ELX112P Active 12" Loudspeaker:

I have owned nine of these speakers, and finally after a lot of repair bills I am gradually switching my (Stage Monitor) stock to QSC. They sound fine, and would make excellent home or pro studio monitors (If you have room).

The cases are very weak are have no protective rails so they scratch and chip very easily. The grill is flimsy and easily dented.

The gain controls have no 0dB indent or marking

The quiescent noise level, even with the the gain controls at minimum is way too high.

No passive pass-through output.

I have had to replace several horn drivers, I assume they get blown easily by transients since the ELX112Ps don't have limiters. I've also had woofers blow, power supplies and amplifiers fail. I own 14 QSC powered speakers and have had far fewer problems.

They may be a couple of hundred dollars cheaper, but the QSC K12 beats or equals the ELXs in every respect. I have sold five of mine and look forward to disposing of the remaining four if anyone's interested ... Don't be!

    Comments about Electro-Voice ELX112P Active 12" Loudspeaker:

I got these because they were $200 cheaper than the QSC K12 and all reviews had them pretty equally matched for sound quality, some even preferred the EV. I think I would give the edge to QSC, but these speakers definitely sound great though they are also not as durable (the painted wood can scratch and chip easily if you're gigging with them). However, after a few months of regular use, one of them started to randomly give super loud pops, whether the volume was up or all the way off. And then a few weeks ago, I was using the other good speaker for at home practice and I heard it pop once. It wasn't quite the same and it didn't continue. But I called in a claim under the 3-year manufacturer warranty. They were great to deal with, and had two refurbished speakers shipped to me the next day. But I'm not sure I want to keep them and try to use them or just sell them and get some money back while I can to put towards the QSCs.

Great sound, but beware some potential quality control issues. Good service department though.
