I've been fighting the "Battle of Bull-Hum", for quite some time. My resume includes reading every product's review on this website, YouTube demos & above all buying/trying every single noise reduction product Guitar Center offers. In short, this is the best one by far. Despite slight tone coloration (most noticeable when strumming muted strings with distortion) that sounds a little Styrofoam-like (better trade off compared to loud buzzing hum). I'm willing to accept that knowing what every other product sounds like. Having the ability to stomp on/off through performances can overcome any unnatural sounding parts of songs. Feel free to read on for competitive item's drawbacks that make the Hum Debugger your best choice: I first had high hopes for ISP's Sonic Decimator G-String: Did one of the best jobs removing noise but: 1. long sustained notes DO NOT decay naturally and end abruptly. Try sustaining a high pitch note for over a measure and you'll be disappointed. Great pedal for shredders perhaps, but not those that like to play with a lot of space. 2. Noise comes back when you play your notes and disappears only when guitar isn't played. If you play soft and with low dynamics you are in trouble, as noise overpowers your desired notes! 3. I wasn't happy how unnaturally the noise came in and out (It's almost better to always have noise, cause your ear gets used to it) and that by itself becomes equally noticeable as unnatural. I then tried MXR's Smart Gate, Ebtech HE-2-XLR Hum Eliminator with XLR, Ebtech's HUM X, ROLLS HE18 BUZZ OFF HUM ELIMINATOR ,Nady HE-1 Hum Eliminator,ART Dual Transformer/Isolator Hum Eliminator ,ART CleanBox II Passive Hum Eliminator & Ebtech 2-Channel Hum Eliminator. All my experiences with these- didn't remove hum/noise and took off from original signal. I gave the Hum Debugger 4 stars (would of given 4.5 if an option) cause although not perfect, it is simply the best choice out there and will definitely not affect long sustained notes, no noticeable in/out of noise, minimal tone coloration, ease of use. The next generation version of this unit should be a little smaller (think Keeley 4knob compressor size) and perhaps offer to add back the frequencies taken away with the hum (in a post-processed stage that wouldn't reintroduce hum). If they could do that, it would dominate the market. Until then, this unit easily wears the crown.

When I got this pedal I was originally pleasantly surprised. I cranked my amp and placed my guitar near the speaker to get a huge hum and then engaged the Hum Debugger. The hum was eliminated. I was seriously impressed. I played for a while on the clean channel turning the effect on and off. I really couldn't notice any change in the signal minus the hum. I'm thinking excellent. Then I tried the distortion channel on my amp with the hum debugger before my preamp. I was disappointed because the distortion did sound weird. I would describe the sound as more metallic and less warm. Then I tried the hum debugger in my effects loop. The distortion now sounded great. It was still able to eliminate the hum when used after the preamp. At this point I thought the pedal was perfect. That is, until I tried some scratches and harmonics. This is the only thing I noticed to be a major problem. The hum debugger will preserve your playing tone with I'd say minimal tone coloration. You can notice it more on a dirty channel. The hum debugger definitely messes with your harmonics. I believe this to be because the pedal removes hum by filtering 60Hz and all harmonics (120Hz, 240Hz, etc). I found this ultimately unacceptable; however, this may not be noticeable to some. I tried this product with a Fender Supersonic Amp and a Fender American Deluxe Strat with EMG-SA pickups.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Hum Debugger Hum Eliminator Guitar Effects Pedal:

Single coil pickups create tons of hum, and this pedal took care of 90% of it without coloring the sound. Cranking the tremelo results in a little bit of a pumping effect but whatever - the vintage guitar was basically unusable and now we can appreciate it

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Hum Debugger Hum Eliminator Guitar Effects Pedal:

Functions as advertised. However, I'm using it with just a Korg tuner and not on a pedal board. I've always had noise issues with the first electric guitar that I owned -- a '65 Kay hollow body with three very microphonic speedbumps that my folks got me for Christmas that year. Basically, I've put up with the noise and played it infrequently. So, long story made short, I purchased this pedal to see if it reduces the noise, plugged into my Carr Sportsman 10", and...near silence! Even on the lower setting. Haven't tried it on my pedal board, but then, my Decimator is set up there. A good purchase, IMHO.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Hum Debugger Hum Eliminator Guitar Effects Pedal:

I described it as effective within limits because while it does reduce or eliminate 60 cycle hum from single coil pickups as advertised it was not able to cope with all of the line noise I'm getting from my effects chain. So the problem there lies elsewhere and is yet to be completely discovered and done away with. For that reason I rated it at 4 stars but realistically 4 1/2 would be more correct and for many users without my issues I'm sure it would rate a solid 5 stars.

Still, I would not hesitate to use this pedal to reduce or eliminate noise in venues where it's a major problem or at home for recording. The tonal effects are slight and probably most noticeable at home or when recording when it's dead silent but they'd be well buried at gigging volumes. I didn't notice any of the "delay" artifacts others describe just a subtle reduction in some of the high harmonics and again it's very slight and barely noticeable in the normal setting. The gain in noise reduction is more than reward enough to overcome that issue.

This is a great product that does exactly what is promised. It's a little pricey, but I'd pay anything to get rid of that annoying 60Hz hum!

Did Not Work At All For Me

            By Rob Wignall

            from Denver, CO

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Hum Debugger Hum Eliminator Guitar Effects Pedal:

This device did absolutely NOTHING to remove hum from my signal when I play with single-coil pickups. I tried it at the front of my effects chain and at the back, and it didn't matter - it made absolutely no reduction in hum whatsoever. I even exchanged the first one for another one, after the customer service people at Electro Harmonix said it might be defective, but the second one worked no better than the first. Evidently this thing works great for some people, and the online video demonstrations are impressive, but I must be one of the unlucky ones whose hum is caused by some other problem. A friend of mine said it didn't do anything for him either. I guess the only way to know is to try it for yourself.

Six stars - no, SEVEN! Silence is indeed golden!

            By Michael Gabriel

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Hum Debugger Hum Eliminator Guitar Effects Pedal:

Listen up, dudes/dudettes: I've been plagued with hum, buzz and noise problems for decades now, especially with my love of compressors and single-coil pickups. I have used as many as FOUR different cascaded noise gates to get a reign on the noise, with barely acceptable results. When I got my EXO Hum Debugger, I was completely floored--the 60-Hertz hum, and its associated harmonics, was THE source of almost ALL of the noise! And, it was GONE! Gone whether I played or not! Even with the volume CRANKED, and facing into the amp! Not only does this bad dog ALSO make my Strat sound better, with little or no artifacts I can detect, but ALL of my effects sound better as well, because subliminal levels of HUM were causing inter-modulated distortions. Even my NOISE GATES sound better, and I can either turn them off or way, way down. I want to repeat that there are NO ARTIFACTS detectable that are anywhere near as obnoxious as the eliminated HUM and BUZZ! If I was Emperor, not only would HEADS ROLL, but I would require ALL electronic gear to contain at least one of these dogs, y'all!

Comments about Electro-Harmonix XO Hum Debugger Hum Eliminator Guitar Effects Pedal:

I got a noisy strat which needed to be tamed. After reading some forums I though best to put it in the effects loop of my Vox VT 120 and voila! No more hum. I will say that there are some "chorusy" artifacts that are noticeable when place in the front end of the amp. However, with it in the effects loops said artifacts, if there are there at all, are unnoticeable. I can hum but now my strat can't!

Features: Yeah it's built like a tank as far as I can tell. Quality & Reliability: Quality? well it turns on when I plug it in. However, as far as the technology is concerned. I'm not too impressed. Look & Feel: Well it looks god awful, but it feels like your standard pedal

I'm so glad I have one of these things. The Hum Killer does exactly what the maker says. I've been playing house parties lately. Old houses, not grounded properly. I have a Tele with original type single coils. Big buzz until I click on my Hum Killer. Then silence. Lovely silence.
