The Electro-Harmonix Nano Dr. Q Envelope Funk Effects Pedal is everything you love about the regular Dr. Q in an even more compact, die-cast package. This compact battery operated envelope device features a Range knob, with an LED status indicator. The effect responds
to how hard you hit the string and where the guitar volume control is set. If you hear plops and clicks back it off. When it's set just right you will be able, with some practice, to get different effects depending on whether you play loud or soft. The bass switch lets low sounds
through when it is down, and is especially useful when playing bass guitar or bottom string notes on lead guitar.

  • Small die-cast case saves pedal board space

Sinister, execrable garbage

By Charles Boehmig

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Nano Doctor Q Envelope Filter Guitar Effects Pedal:

I ordered this pedal to put a little spank in my stank. Well, it stanks all right, but not in a good way. I don't think I've had a worse pedal on my board since I had a Snarling Dogs Whine-O-Wah a decade ago. That thing was a piece of stool and so is this. But I'm not just going to sit here and throw out insults without backing them up with some concrete reasons. This thing sucks tone and is noisy. I know what an envelope filter is supposed to sound like, but the icepick-to-the-skull highs on this thing are really harsh, unmusical, and painful. They should rename the Bass Switch to the Make-The-Pedal-Sound-Like-Doo-Doo Switch, because that's what it does. Flip it up and the bass disappears, increasing the aforementioned harshness to Kafkaesque levels of nightmarish aural torture. Also, I've never had a microphonic pedal before, but when this pedal is engaged I can tap on the footswitch and hear the noise come clearly over the amp. I like a lot of EHX stuff, but this rancid piece of trash would make Satan weep. The box has some cutesy language on it since this is the "Doctor Q" pedal ("Your prescription is inside"). I guess I didn't realize that this particular prescription came in suppository form.

if you have a few extra $, pass on this particular filter

By Peter Followill

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Nano Doctor Q Envelope Filter Guitar Effects Pedal:

Let me say that I have zero prior experience with envelope filters. That said, this was a disappointment. It may very well be possible to get a decent auto-wah sound from this pedal after some experimentation, but I was immediately turned off by the seemingly useless bass pass toggle. Given the simplicity of the pedal, I expected the bass switch to do more than dramatically cut my signal level. I got some classic funkiness with the switch in the up position, but flipping the toggle to the low position produced a drastic volume drop when activating the pedal. I first thought the pedal might be defective but then read similar complaints. I swapped the Dr. Q for the EHX Micro Q-Tron and am now very happy to have an envelope filter in my signal chain. I've been able to get a variety of funky tones on both my Strat and Les Paul with the Micro Q-Tron, so I would recommend passing on the Doctor Q and spending the extra $35 on the Micro Q-Tron.
