I reserached this pedal before buying it and found out that Hendrix died in 1970, and this pedal hit the scene in 71. Although hendrix got to play on a prototype, it will make you thing he is playing for you when you plug this into your rig. I play classic rock with this pedal and there is no substitutes, match this to my mexican strat, and my 65' reissue deluxe reverb, and you can smell the 60's. It doesnt really have a mild, it's more of that all out crazy Hendrix distortion, and distorted harmonics. The tone control is a liesaver and can dial in any soudyou need form a Hedrix bass, to a violin like treble. It's very affordable and if I had to trade evey pedal I own, I would for this one.

I love the sound this pedal makes -- even my bass sustains like a cello on it -- but unfortunately the insides are not built as tough as the big sound would suggest. After owning mine for just over a year, the footswitch started to loosen from the inside and then, one day in practice, permanently failed. This is not a stomp box -- engage the switch gently -- which just doesn't help if you're up on stage rocking. Bummer, ya know?

Sickness

By Forster911

from Holliston MA

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is the nastiest piece of hardware you can buy. I use a total of nine pedals and this one is the beast of the group. Of course, you can gen some nice fuzz with light distortion, but when you max this thing out, it delivers. The distortion sounds like a speaker that blew just the right way. This pedal is a monster from hell!!!

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought this about 6 months ago, and love it. It has great crunch, and is great for my type of music (grunge). I also use it as a slight overdrivey kind of pedal, but it has an immediate jump from soft crunch to hard crunch. My main problems with is are that 1st of all, it is HUGE. If you're looking for a pedal board friendly pedal, this is NOT it. My second and final problem with it is that there is SO much fuzz when turned up to about 3 o'clock. I can barely record with it as well, as it is far to deep sounding for my mics. Overall, though, it is a great pedal.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

this box works on so many levels. Whether it's for bluesy classic rock playing, or soloing, it works. It also won't break. Ever. the range on the tone knob is incredible. I reccomend it to anyone who wants a tube amp-type sound.

boom, boom, crunch

By Jason P.

from Northport NY

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

I currently own an Eric Clapton strat that I play through a Fender Blues junior. This amp doesn't generate its own crunch, so I was a bit dissapointed. So the first pedal I bought was a Clapton Crossroads by digitech. That pedal could do acoustic, a nice phaser, and a crunch, but it was a bit to dry for me. not only that, but it would continually cut out. So i sold it and bought this beast instead. The crunchy distortion was just to my liking. i prefer to set my strat's pickup selector on low, which gives a nice, deep, "muffy" sound. If you buy one crunch/ distortion pedal, it should be this.

Best Fuzz Pedal Ever!

By Connor Harrington

from Newark, Delaware

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is great. The sound of it is very unique; it is a very smooth fuzz yet very distorted. You can get many tones off of it. This can go anywhere from an Pink Floyd to The White Stripes to Korn (although i rarely play it). I play it with a Dunlop Crybaby Classic, and it just sounds perfect. I play this through a solid state amp. Although I am upgrading to a tube amp soon, you can still get good tones out of it with a solid state amp. This pedal can go through anything. I've dropped it multiple times(sometimes accidentally and purposely) and the pedal takes no damage to it. Overall, this is probably the only distortion/fuzz pedal I will ever use.

GARAGE GARAGE GARAGE!!!!!

By Josh Rondeau

from Pelham, NH

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

This simple distortion is a must have for and new alt/garage band. It gives any guitar an incredibly beefy fuzzed tone. It's so simple that there really isn't too much to say about what it does, but there is plenty for you to do with it. This is the easiest pedal to play with to find the perfect sound for your songs. It only has three nobs and is very sensitive to how much each nob is turned. Although I expressed anergent need for all garage guitarist, lead and rhythm, to have this, it's actually much more versatile than that. If you look back at a lot of old songs from the sixties and seventies and listen for a low humming distorition, well it was this. It's been around forever because it provides plenty of distorion with losing the notes being played. It's awesome.

Awesome Pedal

By Jim

from Youngstown, OH

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

I came across this pedal when I bought a new Fender Frontman 212r. The distortion was nice, but I needed something a little harder to push through some Nirvana and Doors covers we were doing. As a result I ought this pedal. Truly fantastic distortion. The sustian is remarkable and you can get anything from a low end fuzz bass souund to a high all treble sound with everthing in between, covered. This handles blues like a pro and sounds great on anything from Clapton to Los Lonley Boys. Very nice and an essential to any rock or blues player's rig.

Best For Bass

By That Guy

from Rancho Cucamonga

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

I Bought one of these babies about 7 months ago for my bass and the distortion has been awesome. I could have bought a boss pedal way cheaper and with an equalizer, but this thing stole my heart. Though it only has 3 knobs, they work! Theres the volume, tone, and sustain. You can go to pure fuzz or to an overdrive sound, its totally amazing. Its not made out of pure steel as it looks, but the material is light and string. Im a pretty big guy and this thing didnt break with all my weight on it. I think this is a value in itself. It has so many functions and brings the noise. You must buy this pedal!

Have a peice of the Pi

By MasterMusician077

from Indiana

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is pedal that makes beautiful sounds that will make your heart sing with joy. It works on so many levels. This is one of the greatest distorchines that was ever made. This pedal can produce a low basy kind of harmonix tone or a really narrow tight sustained distorchine. Or any thing in the middle. There is no comparison of the unmistakeable tone that it makes I highly reccomend it.

if you buy one distortion, this is it.

By strwy2hvn94

from northport NY

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is very versatile. i keep mine with sustain and tone turned all the way for perfect solo tones with endless 'stain, and chords seem to to be full enough to fill the grand canyon. it'd be hard to find an artist without one of these. my only critique is its construction. treat it with reverence, 'cause its hollow with a thin layer of steel. all in all, a must for anyone.

Terrible

By thatoneguy

from Minnesota

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

I got this pedal thinking that it would sound great for the money I spent, but I was wrong. The sound is fine except for it gives an awful amount of buzz and feedback. I thought that my amp was messed up but as soon as unplugged the pedal, my amp was back to normal. I tried it once more and sure enough every time I would plug in the pedal I got more buzz and feedback. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone

Crisp Treble?

By BigMuffForPresident

from Brooklyn, NY

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

Maybe crispy would be a better description. What needs to be said here. If you have one then you know, if you don't you need one. This pedal sends your lines into distorted harmonics heaven! Its great for adding some "tasteful" feedback to your stuff due it its ridiculous sustain. Unless the deeper, darker nature of Rock scares you buy this pedal immediately.

Classic fuzz!

By frances the mute

from decatur, IL

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

Let me just start by saying WOW! what an amazing fuzz pedal. This was the first pedal i ever bought (three years ago) and it has made me an electro harmonix fanatic. This is my main distortion pedal in my rig, my other two are EH graphic fuzz and a boss blues driver. This pedal makes my gibson sg scream through my vox ac15 and avatar 412 cab with vintage 30's. This pedal looks great and is built to last. This pedal adds warmth and sustaine while remaining gritty and rough.

Be careful..

By Jeffy

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

Amazing tone, very versatile in my opinion and works well for my style of music (Blues, Alternative, Punk..). However I am on my second one now (the first stopped working spontaneously), and this new one does not work with the "official" Electro-Harmonix AC adaptor the old one required.. All in all I've needed to buy two of these pedals and now two power adaptors, very frustrating. I probably just have bad luck with these but watch out for lemons.

Sa... Wheat!

By Ryan Sansom

from Cleveland, Ohio

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

I recently popped into my local GC to see James (who is awesome), and check out a used Phase pedal (which I grabbed), and he suggested I try this bad boy out. I had to have it the second I first heard it. I was wanting to save up for a Fuzz Face, but this pedal is that and much, much more. It gives an insane boost, and the different tones that come out of it are amazing. Extremely diverse pedal, and like mentioned in other reviews, the knobs can be adjusted on the fly with your foot due to the larger size. Also, this must be paired with a Tube Screamer to get the full benefit of the pedal. If you are considering this pedal, I HIGHLY recommend you pick it up. Nothing else is better for the price out there... it does old 60's-70's crunch to modern day distortion.

Most Bipolar Stompbox Ever...

By Ryan

from Providence

Site Member

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

Why are you here? Chances are you heard a treble screaming Jack White solo or a warm deep Gary Clark Jr. ballad. A classic among its predecessors and easily still the king of fuzz, you need to get this stompbox. It goes from obnoxious in-your-face high pitched tone to a warm bass filled smooth fuzz. Tip: If you're soloing with this pedal, you need a method to boost the treble. I use a Vox Wah Wah pedal and set it all the way forward. It sounds great at the right settings. If you can spend a lot of money, get the Digitech Wammy pedal.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal:

Wow... This pedal is amazing. My friend owns it and he let me borrow it for a while. After I gave it back I just had to go out and buy one for myself! The distortion is killer and the sustain will carry on for a while. Thats all I have to say.
