  • My favorite pedal yet, and I'm a pedal snob.

As reviewed by Nick Perry-Guetti on 1/11/2013

A flanger was one of the last types of pedal I added to my board, not because I don't like flangers (a good flanger, similar to the one used by Dave Malone of the Radiators, is one of the sweetest additions to bluesy, crunchy guitar tone I could ask for), but because my local GC didn't carry any flangers that were any good, mainly because they don't sell particularly well in my area, where people apparently like chorus pedals better. I ordered this one from There are a lot of seriously crappy flangers out there, and you need to at least hear some demos and familiarize yourself with some "history of effects pedals" literature, if not actually try out a variety before you make your choice and/or purchase. Maybe you might prefer a different one than this...but personally, I don't see how. The Neo Mistress is EH's "nano" (small, or MXR-sized normal) version of the Electric Mistress flanger/chorus. I did not want the EM because I HATE chorus and think that even a bad flanger is better than the best chorus on the market...I know a lot of people dig chorus, but this is my review, so whatever (btw, a lot of smart people who like chorus also think that EH makes one of the best on the market). Anyway, on to what it does: it's very simple, and does 3 things. The first 2 are done by the "rate" knob. This can either adjust the speed of the automatic flanging effect (the "swish" sound, which ranges from very slow and smooth to an extremely fast trill) or, at below 11 o'clock, allow you to set the tone of your signal to the spot on the flange "curve" that you want it at, and keep it there (Prince uses a similar effect on his own signature guitar tone), and this can create some very strange tones that go from subtle to wild depending on how you set the feedback knob (personally, I only use this "fixed flanger" effect when I play crazy, psychedelic jazz-fusion spacey stuff, which is fun when I get the opportunity). Speaking of the "feedback" knob, this adjusts the intensity of the effect. I normally use the NM to add subtle definition and shine to my slightly overdriven blues & slide tone, and for this purpose I generally keep the rate at about 1 or 2 o'clock (remember that because of the special fixed flange function of the knob below 11, this is actually a medium-slow rate) and the feedback down to about 7 or 8 o'clock...however, the effect is so sweet sounding that I feel very comfortable going much higher on the feedback occasionally, and this is especially true if I'm going for a crazy psychedelic effect of some sort. I only recently got this pedal, so I can't speak to it's reliability, but I hope it's better than other stuff I've gotten from EH, whose quality control I have recently found seriously lacking (see my upcoming review of the Memory Boy analog delay, with which I have had numerous problems). In addition, the NM is the cutest looking pedal on my board so far with its purple "swimmers" sticker pattern, and the LED on it is very cool, changing color in a very fiber-optic glow-art fashion as the sound effect moves or is adjusted along its "swish" curve. I want to make love to my guitar's tone when this thing is on. 'Nuff said.

  • Sound like Andy Summers from the Police!

As reviewed by Daniel on 3/18/2015

If you want to sound like Andy Summers from the Police, this is the pedal for you! Not quite as good as the deluxe version (which includes more options like chorus) but much more affordable and smaller. It sounds like a metallic, sweeping wave! Amazing harmonic swirling effect! It uses true bypass switching and 2 knobs for simple, easy-to-use controls. The rate knob controls the sweep speed. The feedback knob controls the depth of the sweep. It includes the ?Filter Matrix,? which allows you to freeze the sweep (giving you everything from classic jet tones to steel drums). Pros Affordable Versatile Compact Durable Excellent sound quality Maintains tone Cons Noisy background feedback Less options than deluxe version
