  • Nano Muff = Muff Fuzz

    I had an original Muff Fuzz, years ago. It wasn't a pedal; just a box about 2" X 1?" X 1", with a switch and a volume knob. I taped it to my guitar strap for easy access. I recently bought one of these new Nano Muffs. I broke out some of my old tapes and made a comparison. Although I can't get the sound of my old '64 Mustang out of my Strat, the Nano Muff puts out the sound of the old Muff Fuzz beautifully, through the '65 Showman that I still use. If you know how to use it, you can get those old '60's-'70's sounds that modern equipment can't match.

  • Almost perfect

    This pedal has only one knob, because it's just that good. A tone knob is unnecessary, and you control the distortion with your hands. It is a very musical pedal in that respect, and the tone is amazing. My only beef with it, though, is that it does not let all of the subtle nuances of my playing come through fully. Aside from that, though, it is great for all kinds of rock, punk, some blues, and a bit of metal.

    First of all, this is neither a metal machine nor some magic blues box. It's a not-so-clean booster with a slight top-end roll-off. You can either use it with the clean channel of your (tube) amp for a vintage just-on-the-edge-of-breakup vibe, or the gain channel for a touch of lo-fi goodness. It works best when used to interact with your guitar's controls. Roll the guitar volume back for more clarity and a softer attack, then turn the volume knob on the Nano Muff to level with the amp. The higher output your pickups, the more you may have to back off on the guitar volume. Remember, also, that this pedal is at its best when playing rhythm (and not just with power chords), though you can get some saucy leads out of it. On the neck pickup, it's just godly.
